Chapter 26
Jack looked up at Ara in surprise. Did she just say that? No, no she loves him he is sure of that. But in her eyes there was nothing but coldness as she stared him down, her hands crossed in front of her chest and her lips in a thin, straight line. Her whole profile was closed to him, not allowing him to take in the body he was so familiar with.
"A-Ara?" he stammered. She raised her eyebrows, her eyes still forbidding and frozen. With his, Jack tried to beg her to stop acting this way, believing this wasn't really her. This couldn't be her! This was a stranger to him, this was not the warm, funny, beautiful Aria he fell in love with a few weeks ago..
"Why are you acting like this?" The person that had the image of his girlfriend gave out a cruel cackle of laughter. His spirits lowered even more at this sound, his eyes only filling with tears of woe.
"Well, I know what you men are planning now! So I have no more use for you anymore!" She gave him a heartless smirk, one of the corners of her mouth tilting upwards in a menacing curve. What was she saying? Did she never love him? Did she use him? Was this love only one-sided? Everything in her face answered all of his questions, non of the responses to his satisfaction nor delight. He looked from her face to the floor.
"You never really loved me did you?" he whispered. Tears were really spilling from his eyes now. She responded with a cold tone of voice, nothing in it friendly.
"Oh god man! How could anybody love you?" With surprise he let his eyes look at her purely demonically gorgeous face. She gave another laugh.
"Look at you! You're hardly a man, made soft because of one woman!" she breathed, "You're weak. Foolish. Gullible." His sight clouded over with his dangerous feelings of sadness and regret. No not regret, contempt.
"You're worth nothing.." How dare she play with him! After all they went through together, before the war and during! He had given everything he had to her, risked everything to see her, even given her his virtue, and all for a game she was playing to gain unfair advantages. Finally disgust festered his brain, squeezing out the last of his love for her, his love for everyone. Playing him like he was a pawn in a game of chess, the first move which is to be taken out by the knight, and the knight was Ara, having betrayed her own side to join the other! He was shaking with rage, summing up all of his feelings into one dangerous emotion: Hatred.
With force he never knew he had, Jack pushed away from Ara and stood up onto his feet, using all of his strength and looked menacingly at Ara, his glare penetrating her eyes. His hands clenched into fists, his nails digging into the palms of his hands. And with a snarl he raised his arm and pointed a finger at Ara, not breaking his stare.
"You have made a very bad move!" he threatened, "I can promise you this, you will regret this day, and you will regret the day that we met!" And with that he turned and ran towards a fire exit that he had staggered past earlier. He wrenched the door open and sprinted down the stairs, forcing his tears to abandon his eyes. He didn't break his pace until he got to the door letting him out into the street. Pausing for a moment, he took long deep breaths to fill up his lungs again with friendly air, until once again he began to run through the alleyways, knowing that in less than fifteen minutes this part of London was going to be bombed into rubble and cement.
Ara could barely breath from what she had just witnessed from Jack. The world seemed like it was crushing down onto her like a heavy weight that no man could lift. She was suffocating in her heart, being squeezed because of the hatred she had received. Choking. Now she can never forgive herself..
"Well now that vermin is out of here we can now get back to normal routine" said Natasha, making a grand gesture of sweeping her arm, as if brushing off dust. It took all of her self control for Ara not to lunge at Natasha and slap the living shit out of her, to kick her to the ground for what she forced her to do.
"That's not entirely true" she growled through gritted teeth. Natasha faced her and questioned her with her eyes.
"We need to find shelter, or everybody here will die at 12 o'clock."
