Chapter 16

Ara walked into her flat, closing the door behind her. It was around 8:30 in the evening, the sky a navy blue splattered with white stars. It was a quiet night, no women laughing in the streets; they were all at the meeting. The meeting she wasn't attending.
She thought over the encounter of the assassin as she made her way to the kitchen. The way she glared at her, how she pinned Ara to the wall, how she seemed to know what Ara had been doing behind her back...
Reaching into the cupboard, she pulled out a bowl and some spoons, setting them on the counter. At the moment she was wondering what to cook, as she didn't have a huge appetite. But eating nothing wasn't an option. Pasta was simple enough. Yeah, that will have to do.
Ara poured some water into a pan and left to boil on the stove, which she turned on before hand, and then shook some of the uncooked pasta into it, careful not to make too much of a splash. She then went onto making the sauce. As she stirred the contents, tomatoes and herbs, her mind wandered to Jack.
Where was he? Why hadn't he come to see her? Only one answer came to mind.
He doesn't love me anymore..
No, that couldn't be the answer. Please don't be the answer.
After everything was prepared, Ara drained the pasta and poured it onto a plate, afterwards emptying the pan of source onto the pasta. She then put on a movie, sat on the couch and started eating away at her dinner.
An hour and a half later the TV was showing the credits, familiar names catching Ara's eye. Orlando Bloom and Heath Ledger were the two most famous. Where was Orlando now? Fighting? The female celebrities were, many of them were dead now and buried in special graves, naming their most famous movies on their stones.
A sudden wind blew into the room, awakening Ara from her daydream. The sound of glass shattering soon followed. It came from her bedroom.
"Who's there?" she called out.
No answer. Of course there wasn't going to be an answer, stupid!
Picking up her fork, Ara crept up to her room and gently pushed the door open. She peered through the crack. Nothing.
The vase of flowers was lying on the floor, water spilt everywhere, flowers strayed with petals missing. Broken pieces of pottery littered on the floor. And the window was open, allowing the steady breeze to come in.
One, two, three..
Ara flung the door open and held up her fork. She scanned the room. Nothing, but the flowers, were out of place.

"I won't hurt you if you come out now!" she said calmly. And it was the truth. She didn't really want to kill anybody.

"Ara?" came a familiar voice. She let out a sigh of relief, it was only Jack. Lowering the fork, Ara watched as Jack stood up from behind the small chair which was placed next to the window. He was damp and dirty overall, his clothes tattered and his nose bleeding. The saying 'sight for sore eyes' popped into Ara's head as he was a dreadful image. She dropped the fork onto the floor and hurled herself at Jack, placing her hands behind his head to bring him closer to her. Jack's arms snaked around her waist pulling her into him. Ara stroked his hair with her thumbs; they were finally together again. She felt him kissing her forehead over and over again, as if desperation had gotten the better of him.

"What has happened to you?" Ara whispered into his neck. She was on her tip-toes and she knew he was slightly bent down. How embarrassing!

Ara. She was so small, so delicate, so precious. Her body warm on his, her smooth cheeks burning against the side of his neck. Her small hands curling up around his back in a dancing pattern. And her stomach pressed against his, flat and solid. Nestling into the slope of her shoulders, Jack breathed in her scent. Ara's scent. The waves of her red-pink hair in his hands, soft against his skin.

"Ara," he whispered, "Can we just stay like this forever?" Jack pulled away slightly to look into her eyes, her beautiful green eyes. When you looked into them, you didn't see just eyes but a season; spring turning into autumn. They were so wondrous you could almost imagine being in them, running on green fields and catching fallen leaves. Green and gold. These eyes were now filling with water as she grasped at the words and what they meant.

"If only we could.." she replied, a drop falling down her face. Jack lifted up his hand and wiped away her tear with his thumb. He placed both hands on both sides of her face and held her gaze, her eyes boring into his.

"When this war is over, I am going to take you out to all of the most expensive restaurants, take you out to all the sights, take you around the world!" Ara laughed. It sounded like wind chimes in a calm breath of wind, tinkling their melodic notes.

"Come on" she said, "Let's clean you up!"
