( 𝟎𝟏𝟕 ) the accidental shot
— ZOE HAD HELPED HER MOM PREPARE the kitchen for later, before she quickly returned back to camp in order to change her clothing, into something much cooler. She was boiling after being in the kitchen for even the smallest amount of time. "Stuck on kitchen duty?" She heard Nate ask, from behind her. Zoe turned around to see Nate, very sweaty and looking as if he had just done a bunch of work. He had his crossbow slung across his back and was smirking down at the girl. He wished that Zoe could have gone with him on the search for Sophia, so he wouldn't get stuck with Daryl's self loathing; only, Rick didn't allow her. He knew that she was still healing, but he also knew that she could handle herself when the time came - he wished that her father could see that, too.
Zoe smiled mockingly at him, before standing up and facing him, "Aren't you supposed to be searching for Sophia with Daryl?" She asked him. She didn't want to admit it, but she was quite salty she didn't get to go with them on the search; getting stuck on kitchen duty has to be the most boring thing to do while everyone was out there risking their lives.
Nate shrugged, "I ditched his ass, thought I'd come back and see how you're doing." He admitted. It was true, Nate was beginning to get on Daryl's nerves with the amount that he spoke about Zoe, and had ultimately told him to go back to the farm and see the girl. Daryl was getting used to his little brothers rambling by now, but that didn't mean that it didn't annoy him still.
Zoe laughed, "He's gonna be pissed, you know that?" She asked him, knowing how Daryl was. Nate nodded in conformation, not caring one bit how Daryl was going to feel when he got back, truth be told, he was fed up - since Merl went missing, or dead, for all they knew, Daryl had been putting all of the heat on him, and he was tired. The only person he felt comfortable with, was Zoe, and he didn't even know why - he barely knew the girl, yet, he felt completely at home in her company.
"Yeah." Nate nodded, cringing slightly at how mad Daryl was going to be when he got back from his search for Sophia. When he noticed the gleam on Zoe's face, he couldn't help but smile down at her, "You seem a lot better now, since the accident." He told her. Nate had kept an eye on her since she had come out of surgery, and he had watched her heal and become happier - it was something that made his day, when he saw her accomplish something with her new stitches on her stomach.
Zoe couldn't hold back the smile on her face when he mentioned that she had been doing better. She had been trying hard to get back to how she used to be before she was shot, and it was hard, but she thought that if she kept doing it, she would finally get better. She had never tried so hard in her life to get back to normal, "I feel it." She said, smiling up at him.
"That's good." Nate told her, "If you ever want me to teach you to shoot, or defend yourself, you just let me know." He said. He knew that Rick didn't want her doing this things yet, but what he didn't know, didn't hurt him..
Zoe's face lightened up, "Seriously?" She asked, surprised that he would suggest that after hearing what her father told her this morning. "What about my dad?" She asked him.
"What he doesn't know can't hurt him." Nate replied with a smirk. Zoe laughed and looked up at Nate with a raised brow, challenging if he would really go against her fathers wishes, knowing that he was the leader of the group - when he saw the look, he began to lean down, hoping to get another kiss, only, when they both went in, Andrea's shout interrupted them.
"Walker!" She shouted, alerting the group around the camp. None of them could remember the last time a walker came near the farm, and it worried them that one was walking towards them, so everyone went into straight panic mode.
"Just the one?" Zoe heard her father ask. Quickly, she sprung back from her close distance with Nate, not wanting Rick to see them together. She had completely forgotten that they were at the camp with the others, she was scared that someone saw them. Nate didn't get her sudden rejection, but he understood once he saw Rick walk into view, and he rolled his eyes, before walking away from her.
"Nate..." Zoe called, feeling bad for moving away from him. He didn't even look back at her when she called, and it broke her heart that she hurt his feelings. He didn't care about what the rest of the camp thought, but Zoe knew for a fact that he would be treated differently by her father, and she didn't wish that upon him. It was hard to maintain something when you can barely get enough alone time, and your confined with the same people everyday - she just didn't know how to handle it.
She knew she liked him, she wasn't going to deny it any longer, but she had never had a boyfriend before, so what was she supposed to do? How does she even know if he liked her back.. She didn't even know why he hung out with her as much as he did, she wasn't anything special, in fact, she was the complete opposite, she was normal..
Shaking her head, she made her way towards the others to see the walker, and Nate wasn't there, meaning that he must have gone off somewhere. She sighed - she didn't know why she had to be such an idiot. "I bet I can nail it from here." Andrea said, picking up her gun - Zoe didn't think that they should be wasting ammo, but it wasn't her place to say.
"No, no. Andrea, put the gun down." Shane spoke, now walking over with T-Dog, "You'd best let us handle this." He said. Zoe looked over at Shane with furrowed brows, noticing that he had changed a lot since they had moved onto the farm, he wasn't as soft as he once was and he seemed more aggressive. She didn't want to admit it, because she loved her godfather with all of her heart, but she couldn't help but feel a little scared of him. He seemed out of control, and she didn't know what was going on with him.
"Shane, wait." Rick retorted, "Hershel wants to deal with walkers." He said. This made Zoe furrow her brows in confusion, what could Hershel possibly want with the walkers?
"What for, man?" Shane asked, thinking the same thing as Zoe, "We've got it covered." He said. She really didn't know what was going on with her dad, he seemed to be hiding something, but then again, so did everyone everyone else in the camp.. Zoe watched them all run off into the distance, towards the walker, and she stayed next to Dale by the R.V, thinking that this was much more entertaining than cooking in the kitchen.
"I wonder what's brought it over here." Zoe spoke to Dale, as she gazed into the distance. "We haven't seen one in a while." She said. Dale nodded in confirmation, as they heard a click from behind them, when Zoe looked up, she saw that Andrea was looking through the sights of her gun, and she gasped. "Andrea, stop." She said, hoping to get the woman to stop, when she didn't, Zoe began panicked, knowing that her dad told her not to, "Andrea, my dad said no!" She shouted. But it was too late, and Andrea shot into the distance, and she heard her father shout. "Shit." Zoe mumbled.
"Zoe!" She heard from the distance, and when she looked around, she saw Nate rushing up to her, instantly pulling her into a hug once he saw that she was okay. The second he heard that gun shot, he thought the worst, and thought back to the day she was shot - he couldn't loose her, not again.
"I'm okay." She mumbled into his embrace, not understanding the sudden outburst in him. When she looked behind Nate, she noticed everyone grin the house running out, including her mom, and this time, she didn't pull away from the boy, instead, she gripped tighter onto him, glad that he was here.
When Andrea came down the ladder she was practically having a panic attack, before her and Dale took of running towards the commotion on the field. "What happened?" Nate asked Zoe, letting go of her and stepping back slightly to get a better look at the field behind them.
"There was a walker and Andrea wanted to shoot it." Zoe told him, holding her hand over her eyes to block out the sunlight, "My dad said no but she did it anyway." She said. It was a waste of a bullet in her opinion, and any walker within any miles radius could have heard that.
"Idiot." Nate mumbled. They were both watching with furrowed brows as they carried a body towards them, and when they finally got a good look at it, it was Daryl, looking as bloody as ever. Nate immediately took off on a run, with Zoe following slowly behind him, not being able to run as fast due to her stitches, "What the hell happened?" He shouted, one he reached them to find his brother bloody and shot. When no one replied, he became angrier, "What the hell happened?" He asked once more, this time much louder.
Zoe placed a hand on his back to calm him down, as Rick held his hand out in order to maintain the situation, knowing how angry the Dixon's could get over family. "It was just a misunderstanding, he's just grazed." He explained, before pulling out the necklace of walker ears that belonged to Daryl, "Take these so Hershel doesn't see it." He said.
Nate took the necklace from Rick's hands, and Zoe couldn't help but look at it in confusion, why the hell did Daryl have a necklace made of ears? As they began to drag Daryl off, Nate leaned in and kissed Zoe on the forehead, before jogging to catch up with the others, leaning Zoe stunned at what had just happened. Glenn seemed to be feeling the same way, as he stood wide eyed with what he had just witnessed. He knew that the two liked each other, but he didn't think they would reveal anything as of yet.
Luckily for Zoe, only Glenn had seen, as the others had rushed off with Daryl - "Shut up." She told Glenn, blushing bright red at what Nate had just done.
Glenn smiled at his best friend, "Someone's in love." He sung jokingly, causing Zoe to smack his chest in a playful matter.
Was she falling for the Nate Dixon?
