Kashi kanya, the youngest wife of King Dasharath, wisest queen of Ayodhya, encouraging mother of Lakshman and Shatrugna, strong and supportive mother-in-law of Urmila and Shrutakirti, a great devotee of Shiva and one of the main pillars of Ramayan.

Sumitra: Su- good; Mitra- friend. Sumitra means a good friend and she really was one. Born in Kashi, she was of the princess of Haiheya clan. She was not just beautiful in appearance but in heart as well! She got married to Dasharath, the ruler of Ayodhya and became the 3rd and the youngest wife of Dasharath. She jelled well with the other two queens after marriage and made the way to their hearts and fixed her position there permanently.

After the putr kameshti yagna, Dasharath divided the holy kheer into two halves and gave it to Kaushalya and Kaikeyi. Sumitra was not considered in this at all but she didn't mind. She was happy for her two elder sisters. But Kaushalya and Kaikeyi who looked after Sumitra as their younger sister, gave a part of their kheer to Sumitra, which resulted in Sumitra conceiving twins. Moreover, this is the reason why each of the twins were committed to other Rani's son - Lakshman was committed to Ram and Shatrughan to Bharath.

When Ram was exiled, she didn't stop her son from going and encouraged him by saying "For the next 14 years, Ram is your father Dasharath and Sita me and the forest is your Ayodhya." She also mentioned his duties saying that he should be stay alert day and night and look out for dangers and safe guard Ram and Sita. She was the backbone for Urmila during the exile of the trio.

Being the wisest of all, Dasharath often consulted her regarding the materrs of the state and the interesting part is that she knew that Kaushalya nandan Ram was the incarnation of Sri Narayan.

A/N: Each character of the epic teaches us some lessons which we have to indulge in our lives. The character Sumitra shows us that how devoted we should be and selfless one can be! Ramayan without any of the characters is not at all Ramayan!
