CHAPTER 7
Milo slammed a hand over her mouth to stop the sound. His hand muffed the sound but Lea's heartbeat filled her ears. Hayden started jerking against his hold, snapping her out of the shocked horror. She pressed her body against her sister's. The restraints they'd used previously were tied to the bed in the other room.
'Lea!' Finn's frantic cry sent chills through her body. Then she heard the growling outside. Milo whimpered next to her, still holding Hayden's screams. Lea started to shake, fear overwhelming her. The door banged as something rammed against it. Milo covered his mouth with his other hand as tears covered his cheeks. They were found.
Lea pulled away from Hayden and grabbed the knife, holding it up to Milo. He shook his head quickly. She nodded, shoving it into his little hand, sharpening her claws again and creeping back to her table barricade, tensing as the door shook again. It creaked again and she heard a shuffling, then wood scraping on wood as the beds and table were shoved aside violently. A foreign scent mixed with fresh blood erupted in the cabin as a large dark wolf stalked inside. Lea flexed her claws, her adrenaline guiding her. Taking a deep breath, she lunged for the wolf.
Surprising him, her claws sunk into the soft flesh of his side. He howled, whipping around to snap at her. Her other hand flew up to block the bite, slicing his snout. Her eyes widened as he flinched away from her. He snarled, ducking his head for an attack and she bolt from the cabin. The chase had worked once, the prey drive strong. Lea sprinted for her life, drawing the wolf after her.
'Lea!' Finn screamed as tears gathered in her eyes. She closed them tight, wishing she could just shift. Not that she was much of a fight then either but her wolf held a strength of her own that could attempt to match the beast behind her. A scent lingered in the air; intoxicating and incredibly sweet. Her legs faltered for a second and she turned in time to see another black wolf tackle the one that was chasing her.
Lea took off again only to hit from the side. She hit the ground rough, tumbling with the furry mass. When she stilled and opened her eyes, she was met with a gaping maw, drool dripping on her face. Lea flinched but make no fight; she'd been caught. Panting heavily, she looked back at the cabin and growled as a man walked in. 'Hayden... Milo...' Her chest seized, tears streaming, and she screamed in anguish, the wolf above her cringing.
"Hey! Get off her!" A man commanded with the Alpha tone. The wolf shifted it's weight, lifting slightly and air rushed her lungs. "You'll kill her under your fat ass." He shoved the wolf off of her completely and forced her standing, a tingling where his hand touched. The Alpha froze, staring at her in confusion. She tried to jerk her arm away with no luck. In a huffed, she glared at him. Her eyes connected with his dark brown ones that narrowed, examining her closely. Her stomach fluttered as her heartbeat quickened.
"Look what I found! She must have been protecting her pup." The man emerged from the cabin with Milo hanging by his shirt. Blood coating his side and face where Lea had stuck him. They both glanced at him and the Alpha's face contorted into something akin to betrayal. Lea grit her teeth, trying again to pull from his grasp. "There's also a girl but she's half dead."
Lea growled with her fang extended, lunging toward the cabin. His hands slipped from her, only to grab her again around the torso. "Don't touch her, you fuck!"
The wolf laughed, tossing Milo off the porch. "Or what? You'll swipe me?" He mocked wiping some blood from his face, the wolf that tackled her half growled and half purred as if laughing. She screamed at him, struggling against the solid Alpha holding her.
"Enough. You're supposed to be gathering, not killing. Grab the girl and the kid. Let's go." The Alpha's voice vibrated against her back and her stomach flipped, goosebumps raising on her arms. The wolves followed his orders.
Lea couldn't resist another struggle as Hayden was carried out of the cabin, tossed roughly over the wolf's shoulder. "Hayden!" The wolf came towards them, her blonde hair swishing behind him as he walked. She snapped at him and he scoffed.
"I don't know about this one. I'm serious, she's not gonna last." He dropped her on the ground and Lea followed her, this time the death-grip arms loosened. She moved Hayden's hair from her sticky pale face and checked her temperature. Hayden was breathing heavy; her chest pulsing, frantically seeking oxygen and whimpers slipped from her throat.
"What's wrong with her?" The Alpha asked over her shoulder. Lea bared her teeth at the wolf as he stood over them.
"Don't even think about it." He snapped, crossing his arms.
The Alpha sighed, "We're taking her too." His hand grabbed her upper arm firmly, gently pulling her up. He didn't release it.
"How?"
He sighed, "Figure it out, Nate." The Alpha pulled her back towards the cabin. Lea resisted, just to spite him. They were passing the side of the cabin when he stopped and stared at it. Her eyes widened as he opened his mouth, and panicked. She hit him in the face with her elbow and ran when his hand loosened. She heard him curse behind her and hands grabbed her roughly, halting her. "Nate! There's more in the cabin." Nate looked up from where he was talking with another man, he looked at the cabin in confusion before shifting. Lea struggled, the Alpha dragging her away.
'Lea.' Finn's voice shook.
'D-don't run; I already tried. I-i...' She watched in horror as Nate stalked toward the cabin with his teeth bared, her mind racing with half-formed ideas. "Please..." She begged, her body drooping. The arms holding her twitched, letting her fall to the ground, yet not releasing her from his hold. "Please... They're just kids." She trembled as she cried.
"Nate." The Alpha pulled her into his arms again, not tight but secured. Without waiting to see what happened, he walked away from the cabin.
______________
Hours had passed and the sun was peeking over the trees as Lea sat in the backseat of a black SUV. The SUV had three rows of seats; Lea sat at the very back next to a female wolf with blonde hair that was tied in a dutch braid and refused to look at her, Nate and the Alpha were in the front seats, and the middle row had two male wolves blocking her from the doors. She'd been shoved inside the car not long after being grabbed but they'd left her alone for a while, the female standing guarding outside. Since driving, the car had been silent and as Lea rested her head against the cool window, she felt her eyes slipping closed every so often.
When her eyes opened again, the sun had risen much higher and the car had stopped. Outside her window, she could see four big box trucks parked in a circle, wolves and SUV's around them. She glanced at the other seats to see them empty. She shifted stiffly in her seat, and as she did, a blonde braid appearing from the seat in front of her. The females icy-blue eyes narrowed, "Don't even think about it."
Lea glared, resisting a growl, before looking out the window. She knew growling at this woman would start a new fight and she didn't feel confident in the small space, or against a clearly trained fighter. Her eyes searched for a familiar wolf, any wolf, from her pack. Instead her eyes found the Alpha and that's where they stayed as he walked form wolf to wolf before disappearing behind one of the trucks. Lea noted the ache in her chest before shoving it aside.
"Can I move up there?" She asked the she-wolf who glared at her. 'Was she glaring the whole time or just every time I look at her?'
The she-wolf growled lightly, "Why? So you can escape?" Clawed fingers appeared next to her face, gripping the back of the seat.
"I don't think I could," Her hand gestured to the horde of wolves outside, half of them already shifted and primed for a chase. "and why did you move up there?" The guard had, in fact, moved to be farther from Lea and stretch her legs across the back seats.
Her blues eyes glanced at the seat beside her, before she shifted onto her knees. "Fine, but make one move..."
"How am I supposed to move, without moving?" Lea asked the very obvious question and climbed over the seat, collapsing against the black leather. The SUV rocked as she settled in the seat. "Are we just stopped? How far-"
"Shut up. I said you could move, I didn't say 'talk'." She looked out the window, resting her head on her arm.
Lea rolled her eyes as something moved in the corner of her eye. She turned to the window to see the Alpha opened the door and jolted back against the she-wolf who hissed, "Why're you touching me!?"
The Alpha stared at them as Lea stared back with the wolf pushing against her back. "Bunny... Has she eaten?"
"No."
"Has she gone to the bathroom?" His tone hardened as his eyes narrowed. Lea noted the color of his eyes was lighter than the night before; a honey colored in comparison.
Bunny hesitated, "No."
"Well hurry up. We're leaving soon and I've sure she'd appreciate it."
His eyes flicked to Lea before he slammed the door shut, rocking the SUV again. The girls stayed still for a moment before Bunny shoved Lea away, "Get off me!" The she-wolf shoved the car door open on her side and yanked Lea out of the car. Lea yelped as her butt hit the ground.
"Okay! Let me up; I can walk!" She fought against the hand gripping the back of her shirt, pulling her away from the SUV.
Finally, Bunny stopped twenty or so feet from the camp and dropped her hand. "Go piss." She ordered, crossing her arms.
Lea frowned before standing, and going behind a bush. She could still feel those eyes on her as she did her business. After she was done, Bunny held up a bottle of liquid. When Lea stared at her, she sighed. "It's sanitizer. It's like washing your hands without water. Just open your hands." Lea did as told and rubbed the sanitizer over her hands. Bunny grabbed her arm and pulled back toward camp, her grip not as harsh as before. Lea followed obediently as her stomach growled.
A shout by the trucks drew her attention as a familiar boy jumped from the truck and started running. She yelled instinctively, "Finn!" His frantic eyes found her, redirecting towards her. She ripped away from Bunny and ran to meet him. He jumped into her arms, burying his head in her chest. She ignored the wolves that were suddenly circling them, and rubbed his hair, cooing in his ear. "It's okay, it's okay. I'm here, Finny."
_____________
After Finnex had tried to escape and a growling match between Lea and the ring of wolves, they backed off, leaving Finn wrapped in her arms. Bunny grumbled as she'd given them sandwiches and waters before sitting a short distance away. They ate in silence next to a fire. Finn sat pressed against his sister as he stared into the fire.
Not long after sunset, the camp stirred to life. Bunny gestured for Lea to stand and Finn echoed the movement. They were escorted the back to the black SUV and The Alpha held open the back door. "He can sit with you." He whispered to Lea as she passed him. She paused, her eyes meeting his, and they stared at each other. Finn pressed into her back and she snapped back to reality, climbing into the very back seat. Finn cuddled next to her. The SUV rocked as the remaining seats were filled and the car started to move again.
"Did you see them?" Finn whispered. Lea swallowed, shaking her head. She shoved away any further thoughts about her family's condition. She had Finnex now.
