Chapter Twelve

The weekend came before they knew it. Genji left his class the minute it ended, sending Lucio texts left and right. He replied just as fast and they met up soon after in the university parking lot. The Asian was surprised when he saw the other pull up in a black Camaro.

"You can drive?" he asked once the window was rolled down. He couldn't help but notice how nicely the musician was dressed - in a tuxedo, tie and all. It made him self conscious of his own dress shirt and pants.

Lucio motioned for him to get in and he slid into the passenger seat. The lights on the dashboard seemed to eye him hungrily.

"I can..." The Brazilian shifted the car from park to drive. He motioned to the keys in the ignition and tugged on a keychain that read 'RENTAL.' "But cars are expensive as hell."

As soon as the seatbelt clicked, Lucio sped out of the parking lot, the tires squealing behind them. Genji instinctively tightened his seatbelt against his chest. "I thought you were a goody-two-shoes, Lu."

A grin appeared on his face as his gaze flickered from the passenger to the road. "I am when I wanna be."

Time passed as they made it onto the main highway. The party was about an hour or two out of town, so they had to take the Interstate to get where they were going. Soon enough, they hit a straight stretch and Lucio turned on cruise control.

"So, what's your style?"

Genji let out a confused hum as he looked over at the driver. "My style for what?"

He rolled his eyes playfully, motioning at the dashboard. "Music, silly. What're you into? EDM? Rap? Early 2000s Rock bands? I won't judge."

The Asian stared at him, surprised by the question. He quickly looked away when the Brazilian spared him a glance. "I... Haven't really thought about it..."

"Just give me an artist. I can pull up a station."

His gaze travelled to the window, watching other cars pass. Quietly, he answered, "Billie Eilish is nice..."

Lucio nodded slowly, picking up his phone. "Billie Eilish it is..."

Genji nervously watched the road as his friend pulled up a station. "You should see me in a crown" started playing over the speakers and he relaxed some. He started humming along to it, not even noticing how the musician kept sparing glances at him, a soft smile on his face.

About halfway through the trip, a song came on that made the Shimada freeze. Dread washed over him as he caught the other's reaction: recognition, and something more. A soft, tender look was on his face as he kept his eyes on the road. Softly, the college student started singing along with it.

"I just wanna make you feel okay, but all you do is look the other way; I can't tell you just how much I wish I didn't wanna stay... I just kinda wish you were gay."

The song finished, and Genji heard slow clapping beside him. He turned and saw Lucio clapping, driving with with his knee. "Encore, encore!" he cheered, trying not to laugh. The other couldn't help but grin and faked a bow.

"You know..." The Brazilian started, letting his hands return to the wheel. "You could've just asked."

He raised an eyebrow and tried to ignore his lips tugging up into a smile. "Asked what?"

His fingers drummed on the steering wheel and he chewed his lip, clearly nervous. After a moment, he mumbled, "My sexuality."

The car fell quiet with the sound of "Ocean Eyes" and the road beneath them. Slowly, Genji reached over and turned the volume down. "Well... What's your sexuality?"

Lucio took a deep breath, a fearful look in his eyes. "I'm bi." He looked over at the other, a weak smile on his face. "Aaaaand you're the first one I've told."

The green-haired male stared at him for a moment, taking the information in. He started remembering the first time he came out to someone and how nerve-racking it was. Seeing his old fears on his crush's face had him reeling. Without thinking, he put his hand on his friend's the thigh. "That's good. It's... Good to tell someone. Freeing, actually."

The other male froze up for a bit, then relaxed. His right hand drifted from the steering wheel to Genji's hand. "Thank you. I needed that..." He let his fingers interlock with the other's. "So... What's yours?"

A pause. Genji could feel his heart racing a mile a minute. "Pansexual."

He watched Lucio nod slowly. "Good to know."

They stayed that way for the rest of the ride, Billie Eilish playing in the background, the sound of gravel and tires under them, and the loud pounding of their heartbeats.
