things tumblr does wrong

Don't get me wrong here, I love tumblr. (Well, I love all of tumblr that isn't porn.) But tumblr users do have a habit of banding together and saying a lot of things that I massively disagree with. So, without further ado, I present a comprehensive list of things tumblr does wrong.

1- pushes out straight and cis people and makes them feel like outsiders

This is the first thing that came into my head, and with good reason. Tumblr is overflowing with lgbt+ people, but as soon as someone straight comes along it's all 'well, everyone's a bit gay really' and 'look! it's the one straight person on tumblr! they don't belong here'.

Newsflash, tumblr users - most people are straight and cis! On tumblr, lgbt people tend to have a habit of almost discriminating against straight people. In real life, no such problem, but once they're all in a group together on the internet it becomes kick-out-straight-people time.

It's not bad to be straight! Not everyone on tumblr has to be gay! But tumblr as a general entity seems to enjoy pretending gay is the only way (and yes I only wrote that so it rhymed. fight me).

If the sides were swapped, and straight people were pushing out gays, it would be homophobia. It happens irl. Why is it acceptable to be heterophobic on the internet?

Time to move on before I accidentally offend anyone!

2- portrays all males as inherently evil

Less of a huge thing, sure, but tumblr takes feminism to a whole new level with its policies of talking about males like they're the worst things ever to appear on this planet and they must all die so females may rise and claim the planet as their own.

Spoiler alert! This doesn't help males feel good about themselves, and it doesn't help the way feminists are viewed!

Imagine if the situation on tumblr were flipped, and females were being told they were infinitely inferior to males. Those saying it would likely be attacked, and potentially reported in some way for discrimination (depending on how zealous those who saw the post were). That's because it's sexism! Don't do it!

3- imposes numerous unrealistic beauty standards for guys

This is slightly continuing from my last reason, but it's more specific so I thought i'd give it a new number.

While tumblr is busy 'empowering women' by talking about how beauty standards are ridiculous and it's okay to have stretch marks and so on (which is great so keep doing that tumblr), they're also doing the exact opposite for men, making 'jokes' about what their hair should be like, what weight they should be, height, muscles and, of course, size of- (enough said here I think).

My point is, guys are affected by this stuff as well! At least, I think they are. I'm not a guy, so I wouldn't know, but I'm fairly certain they probably don't like being told they need better abs to ever be attractive.

4- define people by sexuality and gender and nothing else

Who's noticed, not just on tumblr (although it's prevalent there) but on every social media, that one of the first things people say about themselves is their sexuality and gender? Sometimes, it stops there, and their entire bio is something along the lines of 'jess, 16, they/them, bisexual'.

I partly understand putting pronouns first - if people don't read your entire bio, they might not see the correct pronouns unless they're at the start, and it saves people getting it wrong - but making sexuality and gender the most important and only things you feel are worth knowing?

Whatever your gender and sexuality, you're still a human with a personality, interests, traits and so on. If I was talking to someone and i asked them about themself and  all they said was 'i'm pansexual', i'd be confused as to why they volunteered no information but that. Pronouns don't define you.

While we're on this topic, i'd like to mention a wattpad user who I recently saw in their recommended list. In the 'name' section - you know, the bit where I have 'liv' and some people have their actual names and some have a statement that they really want to put across to everyone - they had 'they/them'. I was in the middle of writing this chapter at that point, so I went to look at their bio to see if they had any more information about themself. They had nothing. This person had said nothing about themself other than their pronouns, which they saw as more important than even volunteering a name.

I'll say it one more time - pronouns do not define a person. Tumblr, and the internet as a whole, seem to portray your levels of lgbt+ as what defines you, completely and utterly. That's not true. Tumblr users should find something to say about themselves other than their gender.

5- lack of representation for coloured people

It's not really racist, although it could be classed as such. It's more people forgetting not everyone is white, and failing to ever mention them. I guess there's something about tumblr that makes people forget not everyone is like them. Just remember, there are poc out there.

Well, that's all I can think of for now. ThAnks her_mi_1 for the ideas for points 4 and 5 (you da bomb) and thAnks to everyone who reads this :)
