The EU referendum
OK so this is kinda political but I'm assuming that none of you are brainless slugs so I feel like I can write this.
WE SHOULD STAY IN THE EU.
Now, this is my own personal opinion, sure, but there are so many more reasons why we should stay in the EU as opposed to why we should leave. For example -
1) Stability
We have no idea what would happen if we leave. Very bad things could happen. We could run out of money. We could cause a war. WE DON'T KNOW. Sure, those two scenarios are unlikely, but the point is, they could happen, and we can't predict it. We know what's going to happen if we stay, because it's going to be the same as it has been for the past however many years.
2) Exports and trade
We sell a lot of stuff to the EU. And by a lot, I mean over 50%. They buy our exports because we're members of the EU. They also negotiate our trade deals with the rest of the world, which makes people want to buy from us more. If we leave the EU, not only will the EU not buy stuff from us, but we'll have to negotiate our own trade deals, and we'll be less likely to get good deals, because a UK outside of the EU isn't a high priority for other countries to buy from.
3) Travel
Being in the EU means that border control between us and other EU countries is much less vigorous. I've only ever been to France, but I distinctly remember the passport check being a simple 'check the picture is the same as the person, check the passport is genuine and valid, wave them through'. It wasn't exactly stressful. If we left, travel to EU countries would become far more difficult. Not to mention that living and working in other EU countries would become ridiculously hard.
4) Jobs
3.5 million (1/10th) of Britain's jobs are linked to the EU, and are likely to disappear if we leave. 10% of people could go redundant. NOT GOOD.
5) Consumer goods
Basically everything would get more expensive, from milk to furniture to mobile phone costs. The kind of extra benefits we get, like compensation if your flight is cancelled, couldn't be achieved by Britain on its own.
6) Cleaner environment
The EU have agreed standards for air quality, and conditions around rivers, beaches etc, resulting in a better environment for people. This could potentially stop, or decrease, in Britain if we leave, because we have no pressure put on us.
7) Peace
Nations in the EU don't go war against one another. If we left, if they wanted to, they could declare war on us, and we're so small that we'd be powerless to stop them.
You see, we in Britain seem to have some ridiculous illusion that we're a super-powerful country, and if we leave the EU it will be irreparably damaged and they'll come crawling to us, crushed and broken, to beg us to reconsider.
THAT WILL NOT HAPPEN.
Britain is tiny. Rich, sure, but tiny. We've passed the days of the British Empire, guys! Now we're just a titchy, insignificant blob that just happens to have once been important. The EU will never beg us to stay, because THEY DON'T NEED US. WE NEED THEM.
ok now we've established that.
Because I'm 14 and clearly unimportant and stupid in the eyes of the government, I can't vote, and I'm fairly sure that quite a few of the people reading this can't vote either. If you can, lucky you.
SO if you can vote, then PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE vote stay, and if you can't then PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE attempt to persuade every adult you know to vote stay.
(I've been trying to persuade people, and I'm doing quite well. I've almost convinced my mum, succeeded with my dad (although he was already voting stay), and moulded my future-stepbrother into an older version of me, who is now convinced that every opinion I told him has been his opinion all along, and that voting stay was the only thing he was ever considering.)
So yeah.
Let's not leave the EU, guys.
