pretty nothings
(DISCLAIMER - i am not, nor do i consider myself to be, a particularly good writer. This isn't a criticism of any specific person, and I'm not saying I hate all writing containing things like this.)
Something that amateur writers enjoy is using flowery words and massively long descriptions to make their writing seem better, and more professional. Instead of a simple description, containing words that actually fit the context, they'll grab the nearest thesaurus, look up a word, and try to fit every synonym possible in the next paragraph.
This. Really. Annoys. Me.
Writing like this rarely makes any sense at all. Oh, the wattpad comments will be full of people squealing over how 'beautiful' and 'artistic' the chapter was, but how many of them actually understood what they were reading? None. Because it didn't actually make sense.
There's a fine line between having full mastery of the English language and being able to write gorgeous and wordy descriptions, and not knowing what you're saying but using a thesaurus to find extra-long words for 'pretty'.
Newsflash - not every synonym of a word means exactly the same. Another newsflash - if you write an entire paragraph using only words that are 8 letters and longer, people won't read it. And a third newsflash - no matter how pretty your description is, if it makes no sense, it's worthless.
Okay, those newsflashes were a little brutal, but you see what I mean.
If you're looking to write long and eloquent descriptions, you need to understand every word you're writing, and be very very good at the language you're writing in. Someone who studied French for two years shouldn't be writing flowery novels in that language. The reason I never write descriptions like this is because I'm not good enough at writing to make it work, and I think that's a general rule people should follow.
Perhaps try replacing 'Phil's raven hair fawned messily over his porcelain forehead as his ocean blue orbs gazed penetratingly into Dan's inky soul, and he gazed at the brunette as a single droplet of liquid water rolled achingly slowly down his befreckled cheek' with something that makes sense, and doesn't have pointless words everywhere you look. (That sentence really wasn't that bad, compared to some of the shit I've seen - I'm clearly too annoyed at 'pretty nothings' to write them myself.)
This was probably a little too harsh, but hey - I'm feeling brutal today. If you write descriptions with a thesaurus sitting next to you, you're doing it wrong.
