my writing process
In case anyone's wondering (which they probably aren't but ANYWAYZ) this is how I create my fanfics
Heads up - it's a lot of effort considering how bad my fanfictions are 😉
1- get an actual idea
My idea is usually just a very basic concept - for example, the concept for Mastery was 'what if everyone was really good at everything'. The concept usually pops into my head as a completely random thought at an inconvenient moment and i have to write it down somewhere if I think it's good enough.
2- develop the 'universe'
Most of my current drafts are based on really odd ideas - I have one where most people are robots, one where you can sell IQ points, one where all babies are designed before they're born... the list goes on. These are just the concepts, not the plots, but I have to fully get to grips with this alternate universe I've created before I actually make a plot. I usually sit down with a huge stack of paper and a pencil and scribble down my entire thought process until the universe is clearer.
3- come up with a plot
Now that I actually know where the book is set, I start to build the plot. Usually, I'll come up with something I really like, start to write the story around it, and then realise I have an even better idea and change the plot again. I always make a plot to start off with, though, and it usually ends up in illegible scribbles on a stack of scrap paper.
4- write
Depending on how much I like the book, I could finish it in any time between a week and six months. The one I'm writing at the moment i enjoyed so much I finished my first draft in one week, but Set Up, for example, took six months.
5- edit
I do between 4 and 6 edits, usually. It starts with one general edit - this is where I go over the entire story, cut out and add in scenes, swap characters to fit their personalities and adjust my word choices.
Then, in an attempt to make the characters seem believable, I'll go over and edit their dialogue individually to try and make their voices seem consistent. I'll do this for each of the main characters, so in my current book I'll do 4 edits, and in something like Mastery I'd do 2. I actually only decided to do these edits recently, so Set Up and Mastery never got them, and that's why the characterisation isn't great.
Finally, I'll do one more general edit. I probably won't make any drastic changes at this point, but I'll swap words and sentences, check grammar and generally polish it.
6- put into chapters
I usually write on Microsoft Word, so it's not always split up into chapters. I put bigger gaps between scenes and stuff, but at this point I need to decide the length of each chapter and where appropriate endings are, and then copy it onto Wattpad.
7- publish
Before I publish, I read through and edit the chapters one more time, then add a pointless author's note and we're good to go!
