four !
Team Seven sat in a circle at training ground three, an open picnic basket in front of them as they ate the breakfast Tsume had made for them.
"Your mom," Aina spoke in between bites of the watermelon Tsume had packed, "Is literally a blessing."
"Only when you don't live with her," Kiba snarked back, biting into his own breakfast wrap of beef and egg.
"We should do some training before he comes," Sasuke proposed as he ate the plain rice Tsume had packed, "It'll help us warm-up."
"Sure, just let finish this watermelon first, it'd be a shame to the gods if I let it go to waste."
Sasuke shook his head, amusement dancing in the depths of his eyes, "I'm sure that's what the gods would focus on."
Aina stuck out her tongue and tossed the melon rinds into the container the slices had come in, "Okay, let's go through warm-ups first to help us digest our food then we can do some actual training."
"Hell yeah," Kiba grinned as he finished his breakfast wrap, "Kakashi will come out here and won't expect it when we beat his ass!"
Sasuke rolled his eyes as he packed away the now empty bowl and stood up, "Hurry up idiots, Kakashi could appear at any time."
The two other children squawked in mock annoyance, pointing at Sasuke in exaggerated gestures as they pushed and shoved at each other.
Kakashi stared at them from beyond the treeline, a heavy weight in his chest as he watched the three children move through identical stretches even if they weren't timed together properly. They were trying to be a team and Kakashi hadn't even started teaching them.
"Obito," He breathed out, "What would you say in this situation?"
—
"Yo," Kakashi drawled out four hours after he had officially arrived, "You all look busy."
"You're four hours late asshole!" Kiba yelled from his position on the ground, Kakashi had startled him and he had lost focus of his one-handed handstand.
"Am I?" Kakashi mused, a finger on his masked lips. "Well you see, I came across a little old lady who needed help with her groceries and who am I to ignore an elderly woman in peril."
Sasuke scoffed, "The only thing in peril is our time."
Aina laughed at his words and slung an arm around Kiba, who had finally gotten to his feet, "Alright Hatake-Sensei, next time you help an elderly lady bring back some cookies okay? They make the best ones. Oh! And what are we doing today, for our survival exercise?"
Kakashi hummed as he held up two bells, "You're going to have to retrieve these two bells from me."
"Hah, that'll be easy," Kiba said, he grabbed onto Sasuke's arm and tugged him under his arm. "We'll have those bells in no time!"
"Really? Well then you'll be on a time limit, you'll have until twelve to get the bells." Kakashi shrugged, "Oh, and I forgot to mention, the one without a bell at the end of this is getting sent back to the academy."
The three almost genin narrowed their eyes at his words but they didn't shift away from each other. It was interesting, Kakashi thought to himself, because he could definitely see the apprehension in the Uchiha boy's form and the anxiety swimming just beyond in the Inuzuka boy's eyes. The girl though had a confident look on her face and Kakashi frowned.
She was an Usagi brat, the clan heir too. He had heard rumours of the Usagi clan back when he had been in ANBU. They had fled from Kirigakure in hopes of avoiding the massacre of clans with kekkei genkai. The main branch of the family was said to produce daughters who could see the future, soothsayers they called them. It was one of the reasons they were a matriarchal clan because the daughters of the main branch were always blessed.
Kakashi had never really believed in the folk tales told about the clan, but he could still remember the day Usagi Airi had been dragged from her home spitting and screaming curses and prophecies.
He was hesitant to say he didn't believe in the power that the Usagi held but he could still hear the prophecy that undoubtedly referenced Uchiha Itachi and the massacre he had wrought. After all, there had been no one else but him and Shisui who used the crow summons.
"You'll start when I say begin," Kakashi said, watching the three children with a bored look in his eye, they may hail from special clans but they were still children, even if they were all heirs. "Begin."
The girl was behind him in a second, hands moving in a flurry of signs that Kakashi recognized as genjutsu. He rose his hand to disrupt it only to lean backwards to dodge the Uchiha boys kick. He flipped upwards to avoid his sweep kick and landed a few feet away only to blink at the steady feeling of nausea creeping through his body.
He ducked under the fang over fang technique the Inuzuka used and felt bile rise in his throat. He spiked his chakra, breaking the genjutsu and glanced up only to flip away from the girls overhand left. She had been using layered genjutsu, he had been dodging their chakra signatures and had been able to dodge but because of the nausea he hadn't been able to realize he what he had been dodging wasn't actually in front of him. He spun around and caught the Uchiha's outstretched arm and sent him flying back towards the girl.
He bent back to avoid the Inuzuka boy and pressed his hands into two seals, "Let me teach you the basics that all shinobi must learn. The first lesson is genjutsu."
He watched as he caught all three of the children in his technique and watched in interest as the girl broke it quickly. The Uchiha boy was next but the Inuzuka was too caught up in what he was seeing. The girl was quick to release him from the genjutsu and the Inuzuka was breathing heavily, clutching at her forearms with wild eyes.
Kakashi didn't want to know what he had been seeing.
"The second lesson," Kakashi intoned, making the kids turn to look at him dead on, "Is taijutsu."
He launched himself at them, sending an elbow strike to the Uchiha's gut. The boy doubled over, arms clutching at where he had been hit. The girl shoved the Inuzuka boy off of herself and barely managed to block Kakashi's first punch. The second found merit in her stomach. She wheezed but grabbed onto his wrist and his lowered shoulder. She drove her knee upwards, trying to find merit in his stomach or groin. Kakashi flipped himself over her body and tossed her to the side.
The Inzuka was on him in a second. A sloppy overhand right came for him and he caught it, vaulting the boy over his shoulder and slamming him into the ground. The boy's dog growled and jumped at him, only to be batted away. Albeit lighter than he usually would; Kakashi could admit to himself that he had a soft spot for dogs.
He pulled the Inuzuka up by his collar and threw him towards the Uchiha who caught him awkwardly.
"The final lesson, ninjutsu," Kakashi went through the seals slowly, staring down the children who were trying to prepare themselves for his jutsu. He pointed his fingers at them and tilted his head to the side; "Water Release: Water Spirit Wave."
A giant mass of water flew at them and they cried out as it hit them dead on, drenching them in water. Kakashi shook his head in disappointment only to look up and—
They were gone?
"What the—"
There was a jingle of bells from the nearby trees, but the trees were empty and—
"Genjutsu," He drawled out, pressing his hands together, "Release."
He stared at the three children, and the puppy, who were standing at the treeline perfectly dry. The girl was holding up two bells and grinning widely.
"Okay, so you got the bells, who's going back to school?"
The girl's grin dropped and she looked at the bells in her hands. She frowned, staring at them before she sighed, smiled again, and tossed the bells to her two teammates, "If I go back to the academy then it is what it is."
"What? No way, take it back, Aina. You and Sasuke were top of the class! If anyone deserves to go on to become genin it's you two," Kiba insisted, shoving the bell back into her palm, "Besides, Akamaru and I could use some more training."
Sasuke hesitated before he forced his bell into Kiba's vicinity, "Take it, I can afford to learn some more things before I try to achieve my goal."
"Learn new things, huh?" Kakashi said, staring at the three children who were tossing the bells between each other, arguing about who deserved to pass. "Well, you'll all be learning new things alright."
"What do you mean?" Kiba asked, his hand shoved against Sasuke's face as he tried to force him to take a bell.
"I mean you all pass," Kakashi shrugged, "Welcome to team seven."
The bell rang, signalling twelve o'clock and Aina laughed. "We did it! We really did and before the alarm too!"
"Your genjutsu's are amazing," Kiba said, pulling Aina into a hug, "We would've been soaked if it weren't for you."
Aina grinned at Sasuke, "We're team seven now!"
"Yeah," He relented, letting Kiba drag him into the hug, "I guess we are."
Kakashi watched from a short distance only to glance down at Akamaru who was trying to nudge him towards the group, "Ah, I want to show you all something." The genin stopped celebrating and looked over at him, the Usagi girl was looking at him carefully. He tilted his head, "It's nothing too bad."
He turned and started to walk and from the sounds behind him, he knew the children were following.
He stopped before the memorial stone and traced his finger along the names of his teammates, "On this stone are all the people I have ever cared for." Kiba sucked in a sharp breath and Sasuke looked startled. Aina simply bowed her head solemnly, as if she already knew what Kakashi was going to say. "Yesterday we introduced ourselves and I said I hadn't thought about my dream," He paused, wondering if he was attaching himself too quickly to the young genin who could quite literally be snapped in half, "But I think I have it now, my dream is to make sure none of you end up on this stone."
"We'll make sure of it too, Hatake-Sensei," Aina said, awkwardly placing a hand on his shoulder, "We'll make sure your name is never written here either."
Kakashi swallowed and looked at her.
Obito, he thought as he stared at her grin, you would've liked this girl.
He stood up, gently brushing Aina's hand off his shoulder, "Now, let's talk about skills and I want everything. From weapon usage to kekkei genkai."
"Me first!" Kiba said excitedly as he led them over to where they had left their lunches, "Okay so I'm a taijutsu based fighter, I have normal chakra reserves for a guy my age and when I do use ninjutsu it's usually for my clan techniques. Aina and Sasuke were telling me yesterday that I rely too much on Akamaru which isn't the best thing because Akamaru isn't that big yet and until I can use my clan techniques properly it's more of a setback than anything."
Kakashi nodded as he watched the genin eat, "Alright, I'll get my ninken to train with Akamaru and I'll teach you how to fight with and without relying on him. Sasuke, what about you?"
"I have more chakra than the average boy my age so I would be a good ninjutsu specialist. I've got good taijutsu and it's mostly based on agility and striking before the enemy can. I can block a genjutsu pretty easy but I struggle with applying them."
"Alright, and you haven't activated you sharingan yet?" Kakashi asked.
"No," Sasuke said, a frown crossing his face, "No I haven't, I'm sure I will soon."
Kakashi hummed, "Okay, when you kicked me you were going to hit me with your shin rather than your foot. Who taught you that? I know that the academy doesn't teach that style of kick."
"My brother taught me the basic Uchiha kata when I was younger," Sasuke confessed, his hand clenching on his chopsticks.
"Alright," Kakashi relented, "Aina, what about you?"
"Well," Aina started after she swallowed the last bits of her onigiri ball, "I try to be an equal balance of long-range and short-range. I have good taijutsu and could sometimes beat Hinata during our spars at the academy. I work with kenjutsu and have my older brother teaching it to me when he isn't busy but I mostly specialize in genjutsu and I have a good grasp on basic iryo-ninjutsu. I don't, however, want to become a medic-nin. I just thought it be useful to have some medical knowledge." She paused before sighing and setting her chopsticks down, "And I have my kekkei genkai. It doesn't have a name per-say but as time has passed people have taken to calling it the eyes of the soothsayers."
"Soothsayers?" Kiba asked, "Aren't those the people who can supposedly tell the future."
Aina hummed, "Yeah but this is real, Kiba. See every generation a girl is born in the main branch family of the Usagi clan and this daughter is blessed with the Sight. The Sight allows you to look into the future of any living thing and you'll see the different paths it can take but there's one catch. The soothsayer can't see any future's they're apart of."
Aina tapped her fingers against the ground, "There's a ritual however that can grant a person access to their own future, to see the branches of the world they're apart of. But to see your future you must be willing to give something up."
"Your mother," Kakashi interrupted suddenly, "Was dragged from the Usagi compound screaming and raving about the future. Do you know what she gave up?"
Aina smiled sadly, "She gave up her sanity. My great-great-grandmother also took place in one of the forbidden rituals and she gave up her ability to feel. It drove her insane, it went to the point where she tried to kill her own daughter just to try and feel something. Sometimes our kekkei genkai can evolve in strange ways and we can see the past, that's the case in my part but it's extremely hard to control what I see."
"Can you prove it?" Sasuke asked, staring at her seriously, "Can you show us something?"
Aina hesitated before she sighed and rolled her shoulders, "Join hands and sit in a circle." Her team did so, Sasuke took her left and Kiba took her right. Kakashi was holding onto Kiba's other hand, staring into Aina's eyes, "I'm going to look into your future, Sasuke. But know that I have no control over what we see."
"Of course," Sasuke agreed, skeptical of what was about to happen.
Aina inhaled slowly.
She could feel Kiba and Sasuke's heartbeats in her hands. Could feel the low buzz of chakra in the air. She could taste iron and blood and sweat.
She closed her eyes, exhaled, and saw.
