Chapter 7

Miss Blake placed her book on the desk and smiled up at us.

"Good morning. As you all know Mr Harris is still missing - I mean sick. Anyway I'm filling in while we all hope and pray for a more qualified substitute to take my place. Okay so, let's get started shall we" she turned to face the board.

I frowned.

There's something weird about her.

I leant my head down and started to read through the book.

I heard shuffling near me and turned my head to see Scott bent down on his phone.

"Hey, Doc. Sorry I'm in class right now can I call you back later?"

I looked up to Stiles who shrugged.

"Doc, doc, doc. What's happening?" Scott rushed.

He pulled the phone slowly away from him and sat up.

"He's been taken"

~

My dad placed his hand on Scott's shoulder with a sigh. "Alright. We're gonna do everything we can. Right now the best thing you can do is go back to school" He looked up at my brother and I and nodded.

Scott stood up, beckoning for the two of us to follow.

"We have to tell him" Scott said as I closed the door behind me.

"You mean like tell him, tell him?" Stiles asked. "Or telling him something else that isn't what I think you want to tell him"

"You know what I mean"

"You remember how your mom reacted. She couldn't look you in the eye for like a week" Stiles reminded.

"And she got over it" Scott pointed out. "And it actually made us closer"

"I don't know. I mean look at him he's completely overwhelmed as it is"

"He's overwhelmed because he has no clue what's happening" I spoke up. "I think Scott's right. We should tell him"

Stiles frowned at me. "You're taking his side?"

"Yes"

He sighed. "Why am I not surprised"

"Oh and what's that supposed to mean?" I challenged.

My brother opened his mouth to retort something back but Scott cut him off.

"Look. He's got people in this town that he's supposed to protect. And it's not his fault that he doesn't know what's happening. He's gonna find out sooner or later"

"Okay but is now really the right time?"

"What if not telling him now gets someone else killed?" I said.

"What if telling him gets him killed? Look I get that he's been like a father to you. I get that. Okay but this is- Scott this is mine and Alex's actual father. I can't- we can't. We can't lose both our parents, alright. Not both of them" Stiles said.

I bit my lip and looked down at the floor.

"You're right" Scott said.

Stiles let out a long sigh. "No I'm not. I'm not right. I'll tell him"

"I'll help you" I promised.

"Me too" Scott added.

Scott headed to the door and pulled it open, Stiles and I following behind.

"Please. Whatever you need. Whoever can help find my brother" I recognised that voice.

Stiles looked at Scott and I and mouthed 'Morell?'

I nodded and turned back to look at her.

Dad and the deputy walked away and Ms Morell came over to us.

"Listen closely the three of you. No Sheriff, deputy or detective is going to be able to find him" she told us.

"You don't have to ask us for help" Scott said.

"Actually, I'm trying to help you. Because if you're going to find my brother then you need to use the one person who might actually have the ability to seek out the supernatural" She said.

I looked over at the boys in realisation.

"Lydia"

~

"A ouija board?" I asked, eyeing my brother weirdly.

"Also called a spirit board, and it's worth a shot"

"A shot in the dark" Lydia commented.

"Could you just try it, please, okay? Let's not forget who this is for Scott's boss, the guy who has saved our collective asses on more than one occasion" Stiles reminded.

"Oh, wait, should we all do this?" Cora asked.

"Yeah" I shrugged.

"You guys ready?"

"Yes" Lydia, Cora and I replied in unison.

I placed my hand on the board.

"Where's Dr. Deaton?" Stiles said out loud.

We all turned to look at Lydia.

"What?" She asked.

"Aren't you gonna answer it?" Stiles prompted.

"Oh, I don't know the answer" she said. "I thought we were asking some sort of spirit"

Stiles gave me an 'is she being serious look'

"Well, do you know any spirits?" Cora asked.

Lydia laughed. "Is she for real?"

"Okay let's try something else" I said, taking the ouija board away from Stiles.

"Okay, these are Deaton's keys for the clinic. Close you're eyes, and I'm gonna put 'em in your hand, and then we're just gonna try and see if you can feel out for his location" Stiles explained to Lydia. "It's called psychometry"

"I'm not a psychic" she pointed out.

"You're something!" Stiles yelled. "Okay? Just, Lydia, put out your hand, and-" he placed them into her hand and she let out an "ooh" sound.

"What?" Stiles snapped.

"They're cold" she commented.

I burst out laughing.

"Lydia, concentrate, please? Trying to save lives here, for the love of God"

She huffed and closed her eyes. After a moment of silence and us waiting in anticipation. She frowned and all of us got closer.

"Lydia what is it? What do you see?" I asked.

She opened her eyes again. "Nothing"

The three of us collectively groaned.

"Okay, just lets give her time" I said, smiling at Lyds and taking the keys from her hand.

"I just- we need to find him" Stiles said as I gave him back the keys.

"I know. And we will"

"Maybe we should try something else" Cora suggested.

"Like?" I asked.

I could literally see a lightbulb go off in Stiles' head. "Automatic writing" he said, grabbing a pencil from the desk.

Lydia sighed as he handed it to her. "Automatic writing?"

"Lydia please concentrate. I don't want anything bad to happen to Scott. If the alpha's are behind this then they could kill him. Or Derek" Stiles said.

"Just concentrate and-" I started but was cut off by my brother.

"Lydia, what are you doing? What what the hell is that?" Stiles pointed at her book.

"A tree" she answered like it was the most obvious thing in the world.

"A tr- Lydia, you're supposed to be writing words, like in sentences, something like a location, something that would tell us where he is" Stiles said, his voice getting louder and louder.

"Well, maybe you should've said that" she said sarcastically, turning back to her drawing.

"Isn't she supposed to be some kind of genius?" Cora asked.

"Genius? Yes. Psychic, no" Lydia answered. "Honestly, I don't know why you're even bothering with me anyway. I mean, especially since it's obvious you should be talking to Danny" Lydia shrugged.

"What? Why Danny?" Stiles asked.

"Because" I heard the voice of Scott and turned to the door where he was stood. "Last night, he was a target. But it wasn't a sacrifice"

"But isn't Danny still in the hospital?" I asked.

"Yeah. That's where we're going right now" Stiles said, rushing us out of the door.

"I'll meet you there" Scott said.

"Why?" I questioned.

He swivelled his phone around to show us the messages from Allison.

She found something.

Scott headed off in the other direction and I turned to Stiles again.

"Let's go"

~

My brother lightly touched Danny's face.

"Danny" I whispered.

Stiles tapped his face again before Danny eventually took a deep breath.

I jumped and Stiles and I stumbled back.

I looked down, spotting a bag on the floor.

Stiles noticed it too and bent down, unzipping it.

"What are you doing?" I heard a voice ask.

I slowly spun around.

"We-um. We're not doing anything Danny. This is just a dream that you're having" Stiles whispered.

The two of us then bent back down to look through the bag again.

"Why are you going through my stuff?"

"Right but only in the dream. Remember. Dream. Dreaming" Stiles continued.

I sighed.

"Why would I dream about you going through my stuff?"

Stiles sat up again. "I don't know that Danny it's your dream. Take responsibility for it. Shut up and go back to sleep"

I watched as my brother flicked through the bag, eventually pausing to pull a file out.

"Oh Danny boy you might have actually found something here" Stiles said, holding up the paper. He looked up at me. "Call Scott. Now"

~

"Deaton's gotta be at one of six locations but they're all over town. I don't know how we can get to all of them fast enough" Scott said to me over the phone.

"Well we might not have to. Danny was doing a project on something for Mr Harris' physics class and I think it actually means something" I said, pacing up and down the car park as Stiles eyed be nervously.

"What project?"

"Something on telluric currents" I said, checking the project to double check.

There was silence at the end of the line. "Did you say currents?"

~

"Okay so what does this kids homework have to do with finding Deaton?" Cora asked.

"Because it's not just homework okay. It's a project on electro magnetic fields. They flow through the earth and they can even be affected by lunar phases, alright" Stiles explained.

I turned the page. "Now look at this. This is a not from Harris on Danny's proposal"

"I strongly advise you to choose another subject. The ideas here, while innovative and thoughtful, border on
pseudoscience. Not suitable for class" Lydia read out.

"Harris wasn't just a sacrifice. He knew something" Scott said.

"Now check this out. Allison's dad wasn't the only one with a map" Stiles laid it out on the table. "Danny had one too"

"Danny marked all the telluric currents. Okay now the weird thing about Beacon Hills is that it actually is a Beacon. Energy flowing through this earth around this town" I said.

Scott moved a piece of the other map on top.

"Alex, look they match"

I cut off and glanced down at the two maps.

"There's three places right?" Scott said. "Where they're kidnapped-" he circled the animal clinic. "Then the place where their body was found-" he circled Oakwood Road.

"That's right on a telluric current" Lydia pointed out.

"So maybe where he was sacrificed is somewhere in between" Scott said.

"Let me see that" Scott handed Stiles the pen. "You said there's six more bodies to be found-" he put a cross on the animal clinic. "Deaton's gotta be somewhere in between right"

"Stop" Cora placed her hand on his.

She moved it back until the pen reached the vault.

"It's in the vault. It's in the same vault" She said.

The five of us quickly packed up our things and rushed to the door.

"Guys hold on" Lydia said.

"Lydia we don't have time" Scott said frantically.

"It's Boyd" Cora spoke up. "The plan didn't work. They cut the power"

"It's just like he said" Scott whispered. "Go. I can save Deaton myself"

"What? Scott wait what about us" Stiles started.

"Cora can get there fast enough without you. Go. We can save both of them" Scott said.

"Hang on wait" I grabbed his arm before he left. "I'll come with you"

"Alex, no" Stiles said from behind me.

"This isn't your decision to make" I snapped.

"Look maybe Stiles is right. Stay here" Scott gave me a weak smile before sprinting off.

"Right lets go" Stiles said.

I huffed and did what I always do, follow.

~

"Okay what do we do" Stiles said as we stared up at the machine.

"We pull them" Cora said. "Pull all of them"

The three of us started to pull the leavers whilst Stiles sent a text to Isaac.

As I touched the last one, the lights came on.

The four of us ran back up the stairs and to the entrance of the loft.

Stiles halted and I crashed into him.

Cora pushed past us and the two of them ran into the water.

I stared in shock at Boyd lay lifeless on the ground.

He can't be dead?

Boyd?

The same Boyd I see every day at school.

Gone.

Lydia came round the corner and stopped by me.

Cora's sobs echoed throughout the loft and Lydia squeezed my hand as we watched.

Is this ever going to end?

~

There was a knock on my door and I groaned.

"Go away, Stiles"

He knocked louder.

"Go away!" I yelled.

The door started to open and I grabbed a pillow and flung it towards him.

"I swear to god, Stiles! I said-" I paused, my mouth hanging open in shock when I realised it wasn't Stiles at the door.

It was Scott.

"Sorry, I thought you were my brother" I apologised. "But then again I'm still pissed at you so you deserved that"

I sighed and put my bookmark in my book and closed it shut.

"What do you want" I snapped, shifting so I was sat cross-legged.

"You're right to be annoyed at me and Stiles. But we only wanted to protect you" Scott said.

I sighed. "I don't need protecting. I can take care of myself"

Scott tilted his head to the side with a smirk. "Okay, show me"

I looked up at him. "Seriously"

"I'm serious. Show me what you've got"

I huffed and stood up from the bed, standing opposite Scott.

The two of us stood there for a moment before I stepped forwards, throwing a punch.

Obviously, he dodged it with ease.

I bit my lip and threw another and another straight after.

He grabbed my arm and twisted me around as I tried to break free from his grip.

Surprisingly, I actually did, which caught him off guard.

I managed to push him backwards and went for another hit when he grabbed my wrist and turned me around so I was backed up against the wall.

"You have an unfair advantage" I said, slightly out of breath.

Scott smirked. "I thought you said you were good at this"

I shrugged, leaning closer so that our faces were inches apart. "You should see me with a bow and arrow. I'm really great at that"

He smiled, his eyes then gazing to my lips. And then back up to my eyes.

The two of us started to slowly lean forwards and our lips were only centimetres apart when I pushed Scott back, turned around and actually managed to hit him, maybe a little too hard.

He tripped slightly, falling against my desk and knocking everything off of it.

I winced at the sound of pencils and pens falling to the floor.

I bit my lip, bending down beside him.

"You okay?" I asked, holding my hand out.

He took it, slightly embarrassed, and stood up again.

"That was unfair" he pointed out.

I shrugged, a teasing smile pulling on my mouth. "You were going to kiss me"

"Actually, you were the one leaning in" he reminded.

"No way" I defended. He raised his eyebrows. "Okay, we were both leaning in"

"Well I wasn't trying to kiss you" he argued.

"Then what the hell were you trying to do?"

He opened his mouth and then closed it again. "Okay, so what if I was leaning in to kiss you"

"So you were going to kiss me?"

He groaned, running a hand through his hair.

"I got caught up in the moment"

"Mhmm" I said, rolling my eyes.

"Fine. Maybe I did, for some strange and unknown reason, want to kiss you" he said.

"And maybe I, also for some strange and unknown reason, wanted to kiss you. But I was also trying to prove a point, which lead to me not kissing you and kinda regretting that but then at the same time I kicked your ass so-"

I was suddenly pushed up against the wall, Scott's lips attached to mine.

Holy shit.

My heart was pounding so hard I was surprised it hadn't burst out of my chest.

I was kissing Scott McCall.

My best friend.

My brother's best friend.

Yet something about it felt amazing.

It felt like we had clicked into place.

Okay, what the hell is happening.

We were both so lost in the moment that neither of us realised we were about to accidentally crash into my desk, again, until Scott hit the lamp and it smashed onto the floor.

The two of us pulled apart and I burst out laughing.

Scott bit his lip. "Sorry"

I chuckled and bent down to the floor.

Scott slowly turned his head to look over at the door.

"Someone's coming" he whispered.

There was a knock at the door before my brother spoke.

"Look, I know you're mad at me but this is twice I've heard a crash from your room so I just want to see if you're okay"

The door started to open and I panicked and just stood there frozen.

"Scott" Stiles said. "You're still here"

"Yeah" he replied slowly. "We were-uh"

"Studying" I answered quickly. "You know how clumsy I am and I kinda just ended up knocking everything off the desk" I explained.

"Oh okay. So are we good now?" My brother asked me.

"I'm still pissed at you"

He groaned. "Still?"

"Yes. Get out"

He opened his mouth to protest but saw my face and just turned to leave.

Then he turned back around again and glanced between Scott and I.

My eyes widened.

"Just get out, Stiles" I said.

He rolled his eyes and muttered "girls" before leaving my room.

Scott turned to me.

"Did we seriously just get away with that?"

"Yes but it can't happen again, okay. That was way too risky. I don't even know what happened, you know" I ran a hand through my hair.

"Right, yeah. Well I should probably just go. I'll, uh, see you tomorrow" he smiled weakly.

"Yeah, yeah. See you tomorrow"

He pulled open the door and we both exchanged awkward smiles before he shut it behind him.

I groaned and flopped onto the bed.

"Idiot" I muttered to myself.

I had one chance and I blew it.
