CHAPTER THREE

THE KING'S DECISION

Medea entered the throne room, Jason by her side. King Aeëtes, resplendent in his golden robes, gazed at Jason with a calculating intensity, his eyes narrowing as he assessed the Greek hero. The throne room's opulent decorations seemed to fade into the background as the king's scrutiny intensified.

"So, Jason of Iolcos," the king said, his voice measured, dripping with skepticism, "you seek the Golden Fleece. What makes you think you deserve it?"

Jason stood tall, his conviction unwavering. "I've been chosen by the gods, Your Majesty. The Oracle of Delphi has promised me victory, with the aid of a sorceress."

King Aeëtes raised an eyebrow, his expression incredulous. "A sorceress, you say? And who might that be?" He glanced at Medea, his gaze lingering on his daughter. Medea sensed her father's unease, his concern for her well-being.

Jason's gaze met Medea's, his eyes burning with determination. "I believe Princess Medea holds the key to my success."

Medea's father leaned back in his throne, steepling his fingers. "Medea, my child, what do you think? Will you aid this Greek hero?" His tone was cautious, weighing the risks and benefits.

Medea's voice was measured, her words chosen carefully. "Father, I sense that Jason's quest is intertwined with our own destiny. Perhaps it's time we forge an alliance with the Greeks."

King Aeëtes' eyes narrowed, his mind racing with calculation. He had long suspected that Medea's powers were growing stronger, and this Greek hero might be the key to unlocking her true potential.

"An alliance?" he repeated, his tone laced with skepticism. "Or a betrayal?" His gaze shifted to Jason, searching for any sign of deception.

Medea's smile was enigmatic. "Only time will tell, Father."

King Aeëtes leaned forward, his voice low and menacing. "Listen carefully, Jason. Medea's powers come at a steep price. Are you willing to pay it?" His words hung in the air, heavy with warning.

Jason's jaw set, his determination unwavering. "I'll pay any price for the Golden Fleece."

Medea felt the whispering flame stir within her, sensing the weight of Jason's words. She knew that her father's skepticism hid a deeper concern - the fear of losing control over her powers.

King Aeëtes' gaze lingered on Jason, searching for any sign of weakness. "Very well, Jason. I'll grant you an audience with the sorceress. But be warned: Medea's powers are not to be trifled with. She will exact a price, and you must be prepared to pay it."

Jason nodded, his eyes locked on Medea's. "I understand, Your Majesty."

Medea's father leaned back, his expression unreadable. "Then let us proceed. Medea, take Jason to the temple of Hecate. Let the goddess decide his fate."

Medea's heart skipped a beat. The temple of Hecate was a place of dark magic, where the veil between worlds was thin. She knew that Jason's quest had just taken a perilous turn.

As they left the throne room, Medea felt the weight of her father's decision. She knew that Jason's fate, and hers, hung in the balance. The whispering flame within her grew stronger, urging her to guide Jason through the trials ahead.

"Jason," Medea said, her voice barely above a whisper, "the temple of Hecate holds secrets and dangers. Are you prepared to face what lies within?"

Jason's determination was unwavering. "I'll face whatever lies ahead, Medea. With your guidance, I'll claim the Golden Fleece."

Medea's smile was faint, her heart heavy with foreboding. "Then let us begin our journey, Jason. Together, we'll face the unknown."

As they walked toward the temple, the shadows seemed to deepen, and the air grew thick with anticipation. Medea knew that their destinies were intertwined, and the outcome of Jason's quest would change the course of their lives forever.
