Chapter 8

A/N: Yay! Answers! I know I made a major plot twist before, but my friend and I were talking about Keeper one day, and I came up with the realization that Sophie is based off of Shannon Messenger, so why not make her her mother? One thing though- that means, whoever Shannon likes best, is who Sophie will end up with in Book 5. The struggle is real!! Okay also, sorry for the delay, but NaNoWriMo is hard!! Okay onwards!!!

Chaos broke out... But only in Sophie's mind. She wasn't just meeting an author, she was meeting her biological mother. The woman she had been searching for pretty much since she found out she was an elf. Now, she understood the resemblance.

"You're my mother?" She asked.

Mrs. Messenger nodded, biting her lip. "I'm really sorry I couldn't tell you... And that you had to go through all of this. But, the Black Swan and I had some... Debts owed. And this was one of them."

Sophie took a deep breath, trying to comprehend what was going on. "Do you know who my father is?"

Mrs. Messenger gave Sophie an apologetic look. "No. All we did was give our DNA, and that was it. I never even met him."

Disappointed, Sophie hung her head, staring at her sneakers. After a moment, she felt a hand on her shoulder, turning to see Biana. "Thanks," she murmured. She knew there were so many more questions they had to ask, but she couldn't get a single word out.

Fitz did it for her. "So, if you're an elf, why are you living among humans? And why do you have brown eyes? Your DNA wasn't manipulated," he stated, asking pretty much all the questions that were on everybody's minds.

Mrs. Messenger pointed to her eyes and answered, "Colored contacts. My eyes were a common question when I decided to stay in the Forbidden Cities. Much like yours and Biana's, they were a vibrant color that I was often asked about." She took a deep breath. "As for me coming here, well you already know about the Seer elimination. It wasn't the elves who eliminated us, it was the ogres, before we signed the peace treaty. I managed to escape and not get killed, but I was never able to go back. And I had to make a living here, so I went to college and got a degree. But in my art school, I realized that I enjoyed writing far more than painting or movie making. So, after the Black Swan asked me to help with Project Moonlark, the visions began. I started writing about them a few years ago, and they sold fast. So I continued."

Sophie looked up, her eyes puffy and red. "Do you regret it?" She asked venomously, narrowing her eyes at her biological mother.

Mrs. Messenger took a step back at Sophie's tone. "I'm sorry, regret what?"

"Everything. Giving your DNA to engineer me, writing about us without even asking for permission or consenting us... Everything." She crossed her arms.

Mrs. Messenger sighed. "Sophie, I apologize for writing about you, and I most certainly regret not asking. But, I didn't even know the visions were real. Most of the visions stopped after I moved to the Forbidden Cities as I lost contact with the person I used to have visions about. But creating you... Or helping do so, I don't regret that." She gave Sophie a sad smile. "You've become a beautiful young woman, who is so caring and talented. The fact that you weren't born the normal way has nothing to do with what kind of person you are."

Sophie shook her head. "I need some air." Without another word, she walked out of the room and out the door. Biana and Fitz stood up to follow, but Keefe grabbed their hands. "She needs some time alone," he told them. "She needs to reflect on it... Trust me, I would know."

Biana and Fitz sat down, obediently, remembering what had happened to Keefe and how he'd reacted. Maybe he was right.

"But do you think she'll be alright?" Asked Fitz.

Keefe ran his fingers through his hair. "She should be fine." Then, he turned to Mrs. Messenger. "I know we intruded into your house and everything, but I'd just like to say that I'm starving."

Mrs. Messenger gave a light laugh. "I'll try and make some lunch for you guys. In the meantime, make yourselves comfortable." She rose off the couch and walked into the kitchen without another word.
