Chapter 11: Lost Code

Herobrine's POV

I woke up in a dark misty cell with my arms and feet chained.

Joy.

Note the sarcasm.

I looked around my surroundings. It was clear that Jeb and Jay trapped me here. But where am I?

I struggled to my feet. At least, tried to. The chains binded me rang as I stood up, but they wern't long enough and I fell back onto the ground.

"Do you need help?" A clear voice rang out.

I slowly turned around, and saw a girl. Her whole body was made of blue and green code, floating and making the shape of a girl. Her eyes were pure red, the only thing symbolizing that she was a glitch of some sort.

"Who are you?" I asked cautiously.

She mock-bowed at me. "The name's Code, thank you very much." Then she looked nervous. "Jeb's coming. I've got to go." She dissipated in a blue flash.

The cell door clanged, and Jeb peered inside. "Oh, so you're awake."

I growled at him. "Where am I?"

"The Void."

I've heard of the Void from Notch, and not a bit about it is good. You would die in a matter of seconds because there was no oxygen in the Void. If not, there's still a lot of ways to die here.

The only good thing is that the entrance to Void is blocked by bedrock, and it's apparently unbreakable.

"So how did you find a way to get in here?" I asked.

"You did." Jeb smiled cruelly. "Never thought this would be how you die, eh?"

I was too stunned. I couldn't speak for a moment or two. "I... I did this?"

Jeb nodded. He grinned.

"By myself?" I asked again.

The look in Jeb's eyes told me what I needed to know.

I absentmindly scrolled through my inventory, touching a black stone with white flecks. Was that 'bedrock'? I broke it with my bare hands.

"Notch would be devastated to see you like this, won't he?" Jeb sneered, interrupting me from my thoughts.

I looked up in astonishment, then growled. "Notch doesn't care."

"Or does he?" Jeb taunted. I couldn't take it. Notch won't care. I know he won't.

"Stop that talk right now." I launched myself at him, baring my teeth.

Jeb just backed away, shaking his head. "Can't get me!" He wagged his finger at me.

I glared at him and tried to fire a fireball at him.

"Oh, and don't try to use your powers!" He grinned evily at me one last time, and walked out of the cell. "Enjoy!" He called as he shut the door.

I only had a second to register what he had said before pain filled my body.

I gritted my teeth in pain. Horrifying images flashed in my mind.

Steve's image, stabbing at me over and over again.

I winced.

Jeb, killing Alex mercilessly.

I hissed. I vowed to make Jeb pay.

Lick, Shadow, and the rest of the crew, searching frantically for any sign of me. Emit was hitting himself over and over, saying that he could have saved me. Erin looked equally devastated.

Notch kicking at me, stabbing down at me while Steve stood nearby.

The next thing I knew, my eyes were open, I was panting on the ground and Code was staring worriedly down at me.

"Are you ok?" She asked.

I sat up. "Yeah."

She bent her head down. "I shold have known this would happen." Guilt was shining through her red eyes.

"There was no way you could have predicted this." I comforted her.

She shrank away. "I caused this." She slowly took out a corked glass bottle and passed it to me.

The glass bottle itself was amazing. Delicate carved patterns covered the bottle. The cork glowed with a green glow. A blue imprint of a bar of binary code covered the top of the cork.

But what was inside...

A small glowing figure of me was sitting inside the bottle. When it saw me, it stood up and waved.

"I-I don't understand." I turned to Code, who looked away.

"This...this is you, Herobrine." Code whispered. "Your code."

I stared at her in confusion, then back at the mini-me. It seemed to sigh and turned to Code, like it was awaiting a silent command.

In response she snapped her fingers and the mini-me dissolved into red code, which floated inside the bottle.

I almost dropped the bottle. "You mean, this bottle contains a part of me?"

She nodded.

"What does that have to do with you?" I asked, but I already knew why.

"I took it." Her eyes shone with regret. "I'm sorry! But Jeb would kill me if I didn't."

"I understand." I told her. But she still cried. Tears fell to the ground, then shimmered as it hit the ground.

I silently placed the bottle of code on the ground in front of me. The red code reformed into a mini-me again, and it sat down, back against the glass.

It seemed just as depressed as I was.

"Can you figure out a way to let him out?" I turned back to Code, who had stopped crying.

"No. Jeb forced me to make a deal that the code could only be let out by him. The cork made sure of that." She replied, despair clear in her voice. "And the glass is unbreakable."

I sighed. I looked at the little figure, who had turned his head to look at me too.

"I should give you a name." I murmured. "What about... Ben?"

The figure tilted its head, then nodded.

"Ben it is."

Ben winked at me and gave me a thumbs up.

Code peered over my shoulder. "I guess you found a new friend."

"Code." I called her as she turned back around.

"Yes?"

"If I somehow managed to let Ben out, would he be able to merge back with my body?" I asked. "Or would I be always incomplete?"

Code considered this. "I think you might not be able to merge."

Been jumped up and down in his bottle. "I guess he likes to be free." I commented.

The cell doors clanged. Code gave me a look, then teleported away. I hastily hid Ben inside a crack in the wall.

Jay stepped in. I bared my teeth at him. "Look who's here."

"Look who's talking." Jay retorted. "You're chained. And powerless."

I growled. "I'm not afraid of you."

"You should be." Jay spat.

It occurred to me that Jay never showed his powers.

Jay placed a hand on my forehead. A white mist came out of his hand and enveloped us in a thick mist.

Everything faded into black as I struggled to comprehend what had happened.

Lick's POV

Everyone crowded around Shadow and me. "Did you find Brian?" Green demanded. Then he coughed. A long but thin scar showed on his throat.

"What happened?" I asked him. Green shuffled away, eyes darting to Blue.

"You never told me." Blue stared at Green. He grabbed Green's hand and led him away from the group. "You explain this to me."

I glanced at them. Green shot me a pleading look.

The others said in unison, "Did you find Brian?"

I looked away. Shadow had tears in his eyes when he replied. "No."

Brian? Brian! I called in my mind. Where are you?

Tell me! Reply to me! Please!

Please...

I felt a hand on my shoulder. I turned, and Boss Steve stared at me. "It's no use."

"But he must hear!" I cried. "I know he can."

"Even if he could, he might not be able to reply." Boss Steve said gently. "He might be trapped. There might be a power restrictor that would stop him from escaping."

But still I shouted in my mind, searching for any sign of Brian.

Brian? Please, reply to me.

Tell me if you are safe. Tell me where you are.

Say anything. So that at least I know that you're alive.

Nothing happened. Not a sound.

I called for Brian. Even if it was nighttime. I called and called.

I was about to lose hope. It was almost sunrise the next morning.

Then I heard a small voice.

Hello.

Brian? I asked. Is that you?

My name is Ben. The voice said.

Ben. Ok. I forced myself to calm down. Here was a mysterious voice, able to talk with me the exact same way me and Brian can.

Do you knows who Brian is? I asked cautiously.

Brian. The voice paused. I believe that I do not know anyone of that name. The only people I know are named Code and Herobrine. They speak always of two people named Jay and Jeb.

I jolted. Herobrine. Brian!

But how does he know Code?

Brian is Herobrine. I told him. They're the same person. Do you know where he is?

I do not know. We are trapped in some sort of prison. The only reason I could talk to you is because I had managed to break a tiny piece of my prison, thus weakening the magic. Ben replied.

You're also trapped? I asked him.

Yes. In a small glass prison. He told me. Herobrine is currently shackled in chains that restricts his powers.

What about Code? I asked.

She is free to come and go as she pleases, but she cannot leave the prison. She is forced to stay, therefore she is still a prisoner one way or another.

Is there a way to find out where you are? I asked.

I can try, but it seems that this place is off the radar. Ben replied. I will tell the others that you have contact.

He paused. What is your name?

Lick. I answered.

I will send your message. I imagined him mock-bowing at me.

Thanks, Ben. I said.

It is all I can do to assure Herobrine of his, and our freedom.

Herobrine's POV

I drifted in sub-conscious for a while. Then I felt a shock, and my eyes snapped open.

Jeb's face peered down at me. "Finally." He glanced at his hands, which were sparking with lightning.

I shuffled. "What are you here for?" I heard a small hammering. Ben! In my mind, I pleaded for him to stop.

Jeb frowned. He reached down, and pulled Ben's bottle out of the crevice. "Code!" He called, his eyes flashing dangerously.

Code appeared in a blue flash. "Yes?" She glanced at me. I glanced at Ben.

"Why is he here?" Jeb asked, glaring at Code.

Code gaped at the bottle. "H-how?"

Jeb fixated her with a murderous glare. "More to the point, why?" His voice cracked. "I trusted you."

Code flinched at Jeb's tone. "S-sorry."

Jeb glared at her. "Now you force me to hurt you."  His eyes darkened and they sparked with black lightning.

He reached a hand towards her, eyes brimming with regret. I dimly wondered why he would be regretful of hurting one of his prisoners if he could kill Alex mercilessly.

Then his eyes snapped towards me and growled. "We deal with this later." He told her. Code nodded nervously then disappeared in a blue flash.

Jeb turned to me. "Why is this...this thing here?"

I turned my head away, refusing to answer.

Jeb frowned, then reached out a hand. Black lightning flashed in his eyes. I clenched my eyes shut, waiting for the blow to come, but it never did.

I opened my eyes. Jeb stood frozen, his eyes flashing dangerously, fingers still sparking with lightning. Jay stood from behind him, arms outstretched, his eyes shut tight in concentration.

As I watched, Jeb's hands slowly moved towards Ben's bottle. He pulled the cork, and Ben dissolved into red code as he flew out.

Ben reformed into... well... Ben, and he started trying to free me.

He took out a knife made of red code, and the second the knife touched the chains, the chains dissolved into red code, then disappeared.

I stood up. "We have to leave this place." I glanced at Jay.

Jay's eyes opened. They were a soft cloudy white, different from his usual blue, and light seemed to disappear into his eyes. When he talked, his voice echoed.

Well, I'm kind of occupied here.

In response, I held out my hand. I bended the light and in front of my eyes, and Jeb shrank. I picked him up, and putted him inside the bottle. Ben's original bottle.

Jeb howled and punched and hacked at the bottle, but it didn't break.

I placed the cork. As I thought of who would be suitable to keep Jeb, a name flashed into my mind. "Notch."

The cork glowed with a white light, and a rainbow-coloured word seared into the cork.

"Mojang."
