Chapter 6: Introductions
"Mistress."
Eliza's eyes fluttered open, wincing at the bright light peering through the window, hearing an unfamiliar sound in her wake.
"Mistress, arise please."
Her body snapped forward hearing the voice again, her eyes wide in surprise. She heard someone clear their throat, when she looked she screamed and tried to get out the bed but she became tangled in the sheets and fell to the floor, moaning in pain.
"Mistress, are you alright?!" There was that voice again.
Heavy footsteps padded towards her, she struggled to scurry away but the sheets impeded her progress. She could only shake in fear as the unknown figure approached her. She held her breath as she felt a hand grab the sheet from over her head and gently removed it, her eyes clenched tightly in fear while her breaths became bated, her heart beating in her ears as her body shook.
"Mistress, it is alright, I'm not here to harm you." The voice rang again.
She slowly opened her eyes, blinking away the last remnants of hazy slumber as they fixed themselves on the unknown man before her, but they soon opened wide in shock. He held such a resemblance to her. Silver hair held back in a hairband to form a short ponytail long enough to rest on his shoulder but not past his collarbone, blood red eyes that casted a warm smile at her, bleach white skin, cheeks tinted a dusty pink and a pearl white grin on his face as he knelt before her. He was wearing a plain black T-shirt, dark blue jeans and leather shoes. She couldn't believe it, there was actually someone who looked just like her??
"Sorry Mistress, didn't know I'd scare ya like that." The man chuckled bitterly.
"...who are you?" She asked softly, her knees still pressed to her chest.
"Ah, I'm Abraham, Master Mortem's butler. Has he not mentioned me?" She shook her head, "hm, well you only arrived yesterday so there's no problem. Again, I'm truly sorry for scaring you.
"..." Eliza could only stare. Not once has she encountered or discovered a case where someone had the same features, that silver hair, those rose-coloured eyes, that ivory skin, she wasn't alone in this world.
"Is something wrong?" He saw her reach out to him and touch his messy bangs, they were soft to the touch, she liked his hair. "Heh, can I take you to breakfast or are you gonna keep playing with my hair?" He chuckled.
Eliza quickly retracted her hand from his hair and dropped her head in shame, "...sorry..."
"No, no, it's okay," he held her hand gently, "I was just playing, you can play with my hair as much as you want, but we do need to head down to breakfast. Preferably before Mr. Fames eats too much." He said the last part under his breath.
She nodded. Abraham unravelled her from the sheets and helped her stand, walking with her outside and down the hall. As they walked Abraham would randomly comment on what he saw and would try to make jokes, Eliza didn't laugh but she did nod and hum every once in a while. He walked her to the kitchen where they saw Chester, Lincoln and another child with dark brown hair laying with their face flat against the table. Were they alright? Behind the boys was a man with blonde hair, another with black hair and a bald woman.
"Hi, Eliza!" Lincoln and Chester yelled happily, startling little Eliza.
"Gosh, she's so cute!" The raven-haired man exclaimed.
"Quiet down you pest," the bald woman scolded as she walked towards the Abraham and Eliza, "you're scaring her," she smiled at her softly, "don't mind him. He can be very irritable sometimes." The man whined.
Why did everyone think she was cute? What about a Poltergeist is cute?
"My name is Cecelia, but you can call me Cece. The hyper one is Damien and the antisocial one is Ivan."
"...hello..." Eliza whispered.
"Come sit with us Eliza, you can sit here," Lincoln patted the seat between him and Chester.
Eliza looked at Abraham for approval who motioned for her to go, she slowly treaded to the vacant chair between them and sat, the boys' smiles beaming brightly as Abraham served her.
"Now that everyone's here we can discuss important matters." Abraham said as he poured Eliza her orange juice.
"What 'important matters'? Where's Dad and the others?" Lincoln asked, tearing apart a stack of fluffy pancakes.
"Ah, you see, all of you have been handpicked to not only be the Masters' children but also their prodigies. You will learn what they have to teach you."
"What will they teach?"
"That's up to them really. Now, Master Mortem, Morbus and Fames have all gone off the premises to you three will be in our care until they return. However, Master Bellum is still here so Mister Jebediah will continue his studies from yesterday." Cecelia explained.
Eliza's noticeably flinched, surely what she heard was a mistake, right?
"...Jebediah?" She asked softly in fear that speaking his name too loudly may actually summon that awful child, the boys cringed at the name.
"Why yes, he's Master Bellum's son," she answered, "is something wrong? You look kind of pale."
"She always looks pale." The boy who was laying face down slowly rose, his dusty brown locks falling before his eyes, his sights instantly locked on Eliza, a glare piercing through the curtain, she instantly turned away from him seeing the anger in his eyes. He must still be mad at her. The staff observed in confusion.
"Jebediah doesn't like Eliza," Chester explained with a full mouth.
"Oh?" Damien tilted his head, "but she's so cute and lovable!"
"How can a Poltergeist be cute?" He growled, taking a bite of toast.
"Well, that's no way to speak about a lady." Cecelia scolded.
"Do you even know what a Poltergeist is?" Abraham added.
"I don't need to when I got the perfect example there at the table." He motioned towards Eliza who sunk into her sweater out of fear while Lincoln and Chester tried to console her.
The man named Ivan slapped Jebediah at the back of his head, "quiet your tongue...before it's cut out." He warned. Jebediah growled under his breath as he rubbed his head.
"Such a rude child," Cecelia muttered under her breath, "Master Bellum will have to teach you manners."
Just then the doors opened, drawing everyone's attention to the tall redheaded man that entered, Eliza's eyes opened wide. It was Mister Red! The man was nose-deep in a book he held in his hand as Abraham, Cecelia, Damien and Ivan all bowed, oblivious to the other children he simply grabbed Jebediah by the collar and dragged the fuming boy out with him as he left the room. Not a word was shared. Eliza stared blankly at the door, Mr. Red and Jebediah were here with her? Did that mean-
"I think it's time for lessons to start, don't you?" Damien said as he picked up everyone's now empty plates.
"I agree," Cecelia said, "if you'll follow me, Master Chester." Chester nodded and followed the woman out the door, waving goodbye to everyone. Everyone left with their respective butlers except Lincoln and Damien who stayed at the table.
Abraham led Eliza down an unknown corridor, holding her hand the entire time, she didn't know why but she didn't complain, his hand was really warm. He opened a door for her and stepped to the side, her eyes widened, it was a library but not like the one at the orphanage. This one was large, more than any she's ever seen, there were bookcases galore stretching as high as the ceiling, all a blinding golden color, the smell of aged paper and olives lingered in the air, sunlight shone through the windows, casting a warm glow inside, she was astonished. Abraham smiled seeing her amazed expression, gently pulling her inside and closing the door behind them, he led her to one of the many large mahogany tables where more books and stationery were placed on its surface. He pulled out a chair for her to sit in.
"Shall we begin?" He smiled warmly.
