Chapter Twentythree

Katherine ran through the forest with the other people, listening and looking for anything out of the ordinary. Last night, Levi had come back from the forest outside the city, telling them immediately of what he had seen. Now, they were all looking for more signs of the Old World Gods.
When Frederick was asked about the other monsters, he said they were probably some kind of minions. They would have a better chance of seeing them, compared to seeing the Old World Gods.
Eventually, they all decided to split up, and Katherine took the time to walk around and listen carefully. Because of her concentration, she leaped back and fell over as a cold feeling went on her neck. Looking up, she finally noticed the red and grey, laughing, reptilian figure in the trees. "Roy, dang it! That freaked me out!!!"
Roy was hanging onto the tree branch with his prehencile tail, one of his two small scythes he had with him in his right hand. Doing a flip as he fell, he landed on his feet and put his scythe into the bag on his back. "Nice to see you too. You look like you're happy."
"Roy, we're all supposed to be splitting up. What the heck are you doing?"
The reptilian face grew more serious. "Oh come on, all the exciting stuff happens where you new people go. I figured that if I followed you, I'd be able to do something with my life."
Katherine sighed. "I really should have you go, but fine, suit yourself."
The pair walked in silence for a while, emerald green light shining through the leaves.
"So, how's life going?", Katherine asked.
"Same old, same old. I'm trying to free some more of my people."
"You're going to get caught soon you know," Katherine said. "Besides, with what I've seen, your queen is perfectly fine with giving away her subjects." Katherine thought back to the first time she had seen the reptiliani, or "scaled one's" as they were commonly nicknamed. They were constantly used as slaves for other species, but when they weren't slaves, they usually worked for their queen. Roy had been a slave for a while, but had escaped and gained his freedom. Now, whenever no one was looking, he tried to free others.
"Even if what I am doing is illegal," Roy said. "I don't have to listen to any kings or queens. I prefer to think we all live in a democracy, if we have any government at all."
"Whatever. If you're caught, don't come crying to me."
After walking for a while longer, they stopped to eat. Katherine bit into a chicken leg, tearing the meat out, while Roy chewed his chicken slowly, to her surprise. After they were done, Roy said he needed to get some sunlight, so they went by the open fields for a while, talking about nothing in particular.
Roy had been successful in freeing three more, while Katherine had finished the book they were reading in book club before anyone else. This subject intrigued Roy. "You like to read?", he asked. "You don't really seem like the reading type. That could just be me though."
Katherine scowled at him. "Please don't tell anyone about that. I don't need people asking me questions. Also, do you like to read?"
He shrugged. "Not really. I only read when I need to, like when I want to learn a fighting technique. I read poetry sometimes though."
"Never saw that one coming," Katherine said, walking a little faster. "Hey, are you all charged up? I don't like being out in the open like this."
"Sure, let's go."
A steady breeze had started, making it hard to hear anything. Luckily, as they got into the forest, the noise was muffled. "Roy, what do you think we're gonna do?"
He gave her a confused look.
"About The Old World Gods. They're supposed to be invincible. They've destroyed the hub numerous times, and who knows how large the hub is. How are we supposed to stop them?"
Roy was silent for a second. "No one is invincible. Everyone has their own weaknesses, wether they like it or not. We just don't know theirs yet."
"Hm, I wish I had your optimism. I feel like the whole world is falling down on me. What about you, are you feeling the doom right now?" Roy didn't answer. The crimson frills on the sides of his head were open little, and he starred strait forward, not making a sound. "Hey, Roy? ROY?!?! EARTH TO RO-!!!!!", Katherine was cut off, as Roy pushed her to the ground, and as a stream of white fire and energy went overhead.
The pair leaped back up, running into the field again. Behind them, an Old World God minion chased after them, the metal plate on its face pulled back, revealing its toothed mouth, which had white flames liking the sides. "Crud, why did you have to be so big?!?!", Roy yelled, throwing Katherine on his shoulder and running a little faster.
