Chapter Twentyeight
Dan flew through the maze of skyscrapers, the moon shining down on his orange and gold scales. He smiled as he looked down upon the crowds of people bellow. They all got to live their lives, sleep in their own homes, and be safe from all of the dangers out in the world. And he was helping that to happen. Ever since Dan had been born, he had loved helping others. He hated seeing others crying, and one of his favorite sights was a smiling face. So, saving the world was a dream job.
The only thing that kept Dan from living a comfortable life of his own was the cold. The unbearable cold. By nature, most dragons lived their first few hundred years in a much warmer environment. This continent was freezing though. And Dan was only fourteen and three fourths! It was nice in other ways though. Where he came from, there were canyons, endless deserts, and volcanoes. Most of the life there was dead, aside from the families of dragons. Here though, the world was green. Life grew almost everywhere, and water flowed, keeping that life alive and healthy. He liked that. He would still always where a thick jacket, scarf, and gloves anyways though. It was waaayyy too cold.
Turning through the air, Dan did a flip, and souring up, he roared, the noise echoing into the night. Then, zooming down towards the wall, he turned back into a human, he landed softly, the dragons wings still there. As they disappeared, he walked to the ledge, looking out at the lights on all the buildings. They felt warm, like each one represented a family. He smiled, and sat down, looking up into the night sky, happy.
"Hey buddy, what are you doing up hear?", someone asked, sounding a little irritated.
Dan opened one of his eyes, starring at the man. He had black hair, and of course, a scowling face to mach his "pleasant" voice. "I was just looking at the city sir. It's beautiful isn't it?"
The man just scowled, and Dan decided that he didn't want him there. Yawning, he walked away, whistling. The tone of the whistle immediately went down as a sharp blade went up against Dan's neck. "Don't do anything stupid," the man said, pressing the blade a little more against his neck. Dan realized in surprise that the knife seemed to be part of the man's arm now. It had a reflective look, similar to a mirror.
Dan put his hands up, smiling. "Fine by me. Lead the way." Then, before the man could react, Dan turned into his dragon form, smacking his tail into the man's face. He flew back, and smashed into the ground, pieces what looked like glass going to both sides. They seemed to reform, right as two more men with equally angry expressions walked up to the dragon.
Okay, so I'm not hearing a heartbeat from these guys, so I'm gonna guess that they aren't human, and blow them all up. Dan spread his wings, and with a hiss, a stream of fire smothered the attackers. As the flames cleared, it was clear that most of them had dodged the attack. The one that hadn't was now a frozen metallic statue. The others seemed to shiver, and then they both seemed to be made out of bits of broken glass, jagged teeth and claws forming. Okay... Unexpected response...
Dan found another one of the monsters strangling him by the neck, and as he clawed at that one, the other two tore at his wings, making the webbing in between shred. With a hiss, Dan hit his back on the ground, crushing the monster that had been strangling him. As he got up though, breathing bursts of fire at the other two, it reformed, the shattered material fitting together like puzzle pieces.
Dan was about to breath another burst of fire, when he heard a deep chuckle from behind him. Turning around, he saw that it was one of the minions of the Old World Gods. Before Dan could react, it leaped at him, and they both went sailing through the air. With a crash, they landed on a small building, the roof caving in. The monsters fists came down on the dragons face, as Dan tried to push him off.
With a furious roar, Dan head butted the giant, and as it backed up in surprise, he rammed into its side, desperately trying to dig his claws into its armor. He was dismayed to find that it seemed indestructible, and with a growl, he leaped back, breathing fire to keep the monster back.
As he turned around to sprint away though, another one of the glass like monsters from before leaped at him, forming a chain, which rapped around his throat. With a cry that was cut off, Dan fell to the ground, clawing at his neck, unable to pry the monster off his neck.
