Chapter 13
Sera moaned loudly. She shifted under the sheets, rolled over, and threw up next to Des.
After her episode she settled back down in the bed.
"Sera?" Mahdi asked. Her eyes began to flutter open. Slowly, but surely. Her head, and eyes shifted to face Mahdi. "Sera!"
"I'm back," she said. Her voice hoarse, and rough.
Smiles broke through onto everyone's faces. Mahdi, not afraid of anything took Sera's head in his hands, and kissed her on the lips. Des did the same, kissing her on the forehead instead.
Sera coughed and wheezed. "Easy there," she got out. She settled back down. "How long was I gone for?"
"A few weeks. You were pretty beat up. You still are," Des said.
"What happened to me?"
"After Lucia shot the spear you-we lost you. It was touch and go until the last few days. You were completely gone. It took nearly a whole day of surgery before they were able to stabilize you."
"How long ago was that?"
"Yesterday."
Sera threw her head into her pillow. "What did they say today?"
"That you were weren't going to make it past today."
Just as Des finishes two doctors come into the room. Everyone gets ushered out of the room.
Once outside they fill Ling, Ava, and Becca in on what had just happened. Then they decided to contact Astrid. She did answer, and the girls told Astrid the good news. They had no idea when they would be able to make their way to the Southern Sea. Sera still had a long time before she would be able to do anything.
The door opened to Sera's room. The girls were still in the concova. So Des, Mahdi, and Yazeed went into the room. Sera was asleep on the bed.
"She's quite alright. Don't worry too much. We just put her to sleep. Right now rest is the best thing we can do for her. She'll be awake in the morning you can talk to her then," the doctor said. "We'll have a nurse with her through tonight. You all have been down here for nearly three days. You need to sleep on beds, and not benches. Please. Doctor's orders."
"Thank you. May we please see her before we leave?" Des asked.
"Yes you may."
The doctor left, and the three boys swam in. This sleep looked different than the past few weeks. Now she looks peaceful. Mahdi was now at ease with the way Sera looked. Color had returned, she was still thin, and weak, but it would return in time.
The girls swam in. "It's alright girls. They just put her to sleep. She'll be up in the morning," Des said.
They all gathered in the room. "For once everything is changing for good," Becca said.
Everyone agreed.
Slowly as the night went on everyone returned to their rooms. Mahdi was the last one in the room. He squeezes Sera's hand one last time. "I love you Sera," he said. He kissed her head then turned to leave. Giving one last look at Sera, Mahdi began his swim to his room for his first peaceful sleep in a long time.
