Chapter 6

"I feel ridiculous wearing this thing." Barry said as he walked out onto the abandoned airfield Wells had brought him, Caitlin and Cisco too, wearing a ridiculous red leotard with padding along with a helmet and goggles.

"It's not supposed to look cool, it's supposed to help us to track your vitals while you run." Caitlin said.

"Still, you couldn't come up with something a little less demeaning?" Barry asked and Caitlin just chuckled at her brother's annoyance.

"Be grateful I'm not taking pictures to show Iris when she wakes up, since she'll need a laugh." Caitlin said.

"Shut up." Barry said.

"Enough with the chit chat, it's time for testing." Dr. Wells said as he and Cisco joined them.

"And I'm already working on something I think you'll like a lot better than that." Cisco said and Caitlin chuckled, since she'd always enjoyed Cisco's enthusiasm.

"Anyways, Cisco designed that headset to be able to withstand any sonic booms your speed might create, since we don't know how fast you can go." Dr. Wells said.

"It'll allow us to monitor your vitals and stay in contact with you. Now, run Barry, run." Caitlin said and Barry nodded and, as if on instinct, he tapped into his speed again and sped off.

"Whoa, how fast was that?" Cisco asked as Dr. Wells checked the equipment.

"He's clocking at just over 200 miles per hour." Wells said and Caitlin's jaw dropped as she noticed something else about when Barry ran.

"Barry, come back here for a second." Caitlin said over the comms and as Barry returned, she saw it again, just for a second. A flicker of yellow lightning coming off of him.

"I knew it." Caitlin said.

"Knew what?" Barry asked and despite the fact that he'd run faster than any human should be able to, he was hardly breaking a sweat.

"Check out this security footage, since we were documenting this." Caitlin said as she showed him the footage.

"Okay, so what are we looking at?" Cisco asked, confused.

"Shush, just watch. Trust me Barry, you'll know it when you see it." Caitlin said as Barry saw it.

"The lightning." Barry said as he realized where Caitlin was going with this.

"Just like you said you saw in your house the night your mom was killed. I think that we may have just found a clue about who or what killed her." Caitlin said.

"I can't believe it." Barry said.

"This is intriguing, but for now, we need to get back to testing." Wells said.

"Before we do that, we need to start structuring Barry a new diet, since running that fast is going to burn off a lot more calories than what's healthy for anyone, so he'll need a new diet to compensate. Otherwise this ability could end up causing more harm to him than good." Caitlin said.

"Agreed. We'll use the data we collect here today to help fashion Barry a new diet." Wells said, right as his phone rang.

"Hello. Yes, I'm currently away from the lab, what is going on?" Wells asked, only to appear shocked by why he heard.

"What, that's impossible." Wells said.

"What's going on?" Caitlin asked, seeing the look of concern on her boss's face.

"That was Dr. Stone back at the lab, the accelerator has been activated." Wells said.

"What, that's impossible. We're still in the final phase of its construction, it shouldn't be possible for it to be activated soon." Cisco said.

"Exactly. Barry, I know you literally just got your speed, but you're the fastest way for Cisco and I to get back to Star Labs to try and shut the accelerator down. Caitlin, call Detective West, warn him to order an emergency evacuation of Central City, just to be safe. If we can't stop the accelerator, we need to minimize the damage it could do." Wells said.

"I'm on it." Barry said as he quickly sped back into his regular clothes before grabbing both Cisco and Wells and speeding back towards the city while Caitlin called Joe to get him to issue the evacuation.

After Barry rushed Wells and Cisco back to Star Labs, they found the entire building in chaos.

"Status report." Wells asked one of his top scientists, Dr. Silas Stone as he rushed over to the cortex's main control station.

"Sir, I don't know how it happened, but the accelerator is charging up somehow. The system is overloading and attempts to override it aren't working." Silas said.

"Barry, come with me." Cisco said as he led Barry away towards his workshop.

"Cisco, what's going on?" Barry asked as Cisco showed him a dark red bodysuit with a gas mask.

"Put this on. I designed it as a prototype to replace the turnouts firemen wear, so it's heat and abrasive resistant, so it should be able to hold up to your speed. I figure that you can use this to help get more people out of the city faster in case we can't stop this. I just wish I had more time to customize it." Cisco said.

"Not now Cisco. But I can barely control my speed." Barry said.

"You can control it enough to get people out of the city. Just run until you can't run anymore. Get people out of the city limits. Hopefully it's just us being overcautious, but the more precautions we take, the better." Cisco said and Barry couldn't deny that as he quickly sped into the suit.

"Now run Barry, run." Cisco said and Barry nodded as he sped out of the room as Cisco rushed to the Cortex.

"Any luck?" Cisco asked.

"No. The only option left is to try the manual shut down override valve down in the accelerator, but it's too dangerous." Wells said.

"We have to try, we can't just let this thing blow up. What's the blast radius if it does?" Cisco asked.

"It'll cover all of Central City." Silas said.

"Caitlin is currently safely outside the city's boundaries and she's talked with CCPD to order an evacuation, so if we can't stop the reaction, we need to try to contain it until the city is empty." Wells said, even though all three of them knew that was impossible.

"I'll go see if I can shut it down manually." Cisco said.

"No Cisco, that's a suicide mission. We need to seal off the accelerator now and execute containment protocols." Wells said as he did exactly that.

"Now we just have to hope that will hold." Wells said, even though none of them knew that he'd designed the containment protocols to fail.

"Dr. Wells, it's not working and the reaction can't be contained." Cisco said as he tried to rush towards to the accelerator, right as it blew up, releasing a wave of energy across the entire city.
