Chapter 116
Gabby couldn't help but notice that ever since they'd returned from Blue Valley, Caitlin had been quiet, like she was thinking hard about something and Gabby didn't have to use her profiling skills to guess what it was. Ever since they'd gotten together and even before that, she'd heard stories about Caitlin's childhood in Blue Valley and the town they'd been in didn't match them at all. Now the town looked like it was dying. It was close to a slum now and it had lost the small town charm Caitlin had told her about.
"So, when exactly are we going to talk about what's going on in your head?" Gabby asked her fiance as she made dinner in their shared apartment.
"What?" Caitlin asked.
"You want us to pack up and move to Blue Valley to help bring the town back to life." Gabby said with a grin, knowing her fiance too well.
"I didn't know how to bring it up." Caitlin said.
"Why do you think I did? So, talk to me. That's what I'm here for. That's part of what having a fiance means. We don't start ignoring each other until we get married." Gabby said, trying to lighten the mood.
"Gabby, can we be serious now." Caitlin asked her.
"Right, sorry. But seriously, Cait, are you really thinking about this?" Gabby asked her.
"Yeah I am. I know Blue Valley isn't perfect, but it was my home and in a way it still is. I know we have lives here in Central City, but I can't help but feel like Blue Valley needs us more." Caitlin said.
"I get it. More than you think." Gabby said, causing Caitlin to raise an eyebrow at her.
"Really?" Caitlin asked, surprised at that.
Gabby walked up to the counter where Caitlin was preparing dinner and pulled her away so she could look her love right in the eyes.
"When we were walking through Blue Valley today, what I saw was a town that needed some hope. Boarded up shops, empty houses, people moving away, not settling down, it's like a lot of other small towns in America these days. I could tell by the way the people did look at us heroes, it was like they were waiting for us to somehow save it. Waiting for someone to care. Whatever happened to that town after you moved away, it and its people are clearly hurting. Anyone who walks through it can feel it." Gabby said.
Caitlin couldn't help but swallow a bit as guilt filled her eyes.
"It shouldn't feel like it's my responsibility." Caitlin said.
"No, it shouldn't." Gabby agreed, "but that doesn't mean you're wrong for wanting to help."
"It's my hometown. And no matter how much I love Central City, deep down in my heart, I'll always be the girl from Blue Valley. That town is my home and it needs help. I know it's not exactly logical, but I feel like if I don't do something, no one else will." Caitlin said.
"Hey, this isn't about logic. It's about home." Gabby cut in, gently as she pulled Caitlin in close, causing her breath to hitch a little.
"You told me stories about the Blue Valley you grew up in. A warm, bright little world that a lot of people considered to be the heart and soul of Nebraska. But what we saw today. That wasn't anywhere close to it. And I could see how much the town's current state hurt you." Gabby said.
"So you're saying that you're open to moving to Blue Valley? I don't want you to do it just to make me happy. It's not worth it if only one of us will be happy there." Caitlin said.
"Cait, if this was just about making you happy, I'd tell you. You know me well enough to know that I'm not a yes woman. I don't just say yes to what you want. If I didn't want to do this, I'd tell you. Besides, I think it would do us both some good to get out of Central City. Specifically out of your brother's shadow. After all, Central City is still only known as the home of the Flash. I think it's time we both stepped out of that shadow." Gabby said.
"You're really not just saying this to make me happy?" Caitlin asked.
"Of course not. I'm saying it because of what we saw. I didn't just see what Blue Valley used to be. I saw what it could be again. And I saw you — the way you looked around like you were trying to stitch the whole place back together with your bare hands."
Caitlin's breath hitched, just a little.
Gabby reached out, brushing her thumb along Caitlin's cheek. "I want a future with you. A real one. And if that future includes rebuilding a town that shaped you into the woman I fell in love with... then that's not a sacrifice. That's an opportunity."
Caitlin finally met her eyes, vulnerable and hopeful all at once. "You're sure?"
Gabby smiled — warm, steady, certain. "I'm sure. But we're doing this together. If we move, it's because both of us want to. If we stay, it's because both of us choose that too. No one gets dragged anywhere."
"So, are we really doing this?" Caitlin asked.
"Yeah, I think we are. I can leave Lisa in charge of Checkmate's operation here in Central City and start up a new branch in Blue Valley and I think the town would definitely benefit from your medical expertise. Plus, having its own superheroes could help with tourism, since half of the tourists Central City gets are just hoping to get a peek at the Flash. Same deal with Metropolis, National City, Palermo City, even Gotham. Superheroes are good for tourism, believe it or not." Gabby said.
"If we do this, I do have one condition though." Caitlin said.
"And that would be?" Gabby asked.
"We get married before we move. After we get back from Kara and Lena's wedding of course, since that one is long overdue." Caitlin said with a smile.
"I agree with both of those things." Gabby said, since that sounded perfect to her.
In case it wasn't clear from the end of this chapter, the next thing I'll be working on is probably one of the most awaited stories of this series. It's finally time for Wedding Chronicles Book 4: Kara x Lena. I'm really looking forward to writing it.
