| CHAPTER 79 |

It was too early in the morning, so early even the sun hadn't woken up. The streets were empty, and the sky was still. No birds, no sound—just silence.

The only sign of life came from the 24-hour convenience store nearby, its lights glowing faintly against the darkness. Inside, the sleepy cashier sat behind the counter, looking like he was seconds away from dozing off.

And then there was you, sitting in the store, doing... well, doing nothing, really. Unless counting the packets of face wipes on the shelf in front of you counts as a job. If it did, you were working hard—you'd counted 233 so far.

The cashier, though, wasn't paying attention. He was fast asleep, head leaning back, completely unaware that someone could easily rob the place.

But sleep like that only comes when someone trusts you with their life.

And this cashier? Oh, he trusted you. Because the cashier in question was none other than Jeon Jungkook himself.

A fan not trusting their idol with their life? Now, that would be the real joke.

So, there you sat, the unofficial guardian of Jungkook's convenience store kingdom, wondering if this surreal moment was a dream—or just a wild story waiting to happen.

You hadn't slept peacefully in six days. Your thoughts were relentless, clawing at you every time you closed your eyes.

The incident from a week ago still lingered like a fresh cut, raw and unhealed in the mess of your already complicated life.

But it wasn't about the case. The case had left you utterly satisfied with its outcome. You should have been sleeping with a smile on your face, feeling victorious. Instead, here you were—sitting in a convenience store at 4 a.m., staring blankly at the shelves.

Overthinking.

Namjoon's help had saved you that day in court. For that, you were grateful—eternally so. But beneath the gratitude, deep in the hidden corners of your heart, was a loneliness you couldn't shake.

It was the kind of loneliness that creeps in when something you once loved—the thing that used to ignite your spirit—suddenly feels distant. Like a favorite song losing its magic or a place you once found comfort in now feeling empty.

Winning the case should have been your triumph, your ultimate high. But instead, it left you with a strange hollowness.

Almost like you lost something along the way.

"Miss Min, how are you feeling?"

"How difficult was it to reveal the most hideous criminal in Korea?"

"Can you share your lawsuit journey?"

The questions came one after another that day, relentless and exhausting. But you handled them, as always, with the poise you'd trained yourself to master. Positive, negative—it didn't matter. Your smile never faltered, though it felt paper-thin. You wore it like armor, a shield to deflect the world's curiosity.

Through the sea of faces and flashing cameras, you caught sight of him. Namjoon.

He stood frozen, as if carved from stone, his tall frame unmistakable even amidst the chaos. You saw people approach him—offering condolences, harsh words, or even spiteful glares—but he didn't react. Not a muscle twitched. He just stood there, lost in some inner turmoil you couldn't quite place.

And yet, despite everything, he looked... calm? No, not calm. Proud. Like he wasn't just a spectator but someone who had claimed victory, too.

You didn't know what possessed you, but before you realized it, your feet moved on their own. You turned away from the reporters, ignoring their relentless demands for answers, and walked straight toward him.

"Thank you," you said softly, each word trembling with unspoken gratitude. "Really, thank you so much."

His gaze snapped to yours, startled, and for the first time, you smiled at him. Not the polite, professional mask you'd been wearing all morning, but something real. Genuine. You didn't know what you expected in return—a smile, a word, anything—but the moment his hand clasped yours, something inside you shifted.

His grip was firm, grounding you in a way you hadn't felt in weeks. The warmth of his palm, the slight hesitation before the let go—it all felt so... empty again

He smiled then, a small, almost hesitant smile. Polite. Reserved. At first glance, it was just a gesture of acknowledgment, but you could see through it. Beneath that calm exterior was something deeper: pride, relief, and maybe—just maybe—admiration.

For a fleeting moment, you thought, this is enough. This makes everything worth it.

"Do let me know if I can help you someday," you added, your voice steady, your smile professional again. But you felt exposed, like your words carried far more weight than you intended.

Then his expression changed.

The subtle smile vanished, replaced by something darker, something... unreadable. His brows furrowed, his lips pressed into a firm line, and his eyes clouded with an emotion you couldn't name. Was it regret? Sadness? Guilt?

And just like that, the whirlwind of emotions you'd been holding back surged forward, threatening to choke you. Why did he look like that? What was he thinking? Did you say the wrong thing?

You forced yourself to hold his gaze, even as your mind screamed at you to look away. What does that expression mean, Namjoon? Why won't you just say something?

The silence between you stretched thin, and suddenly, you felt small. Vulnerable. Like the person standing before him wasn't Korea's undefeated attorney but just... you. A person still unsure if they could ever truly deserve that victory—or his trust.

so that's it right?

everything's over, right?

now what?

You turned around, already feeling the quiet ache of losing the thrill that had fueled your life these past months.

These eleven months had been the turning point of your existence, a time that reshaped you in ways you could have never imagined. You knew you would never be the same person again. You had grown, matured emotionally in ways that made the old fears you carried throughout your youth feel like faint echoes of someone you no longer were.

The insecurities, the self-doubt, the constant undercurrent of inadequacy—they had all been transformed into something more refined. Something stronger.

Even the biggest elephant in the room—rejection—no longer loomed over you like a dark shadow. Once, it had felt suffocating, an invisible force that dictated your every move, made you second-guess every word you spoke, every step you took. You used to underestimate yourself, convinced that certain dreams, certain goals, just weren't meant for you.

You had spent so much of your life trapped in that mental closet, blind to the good that had come your way because rejection had colored everything in shades of failure. It broke you in ways you didn't even recognize back then. And for years, you poured all your energy into trying to piece yourself back together.

But you had never been desperate—not for attention, not for a relationship, not for validation. That wasn't who you were. And yet, that one rejection—the one where your confidence in expressing yourself, your pride in simply being you—had cracked something fundamental.

It turned you inward. You became quiet, shy, introverted—so unlike the lively, confident student you used to be. That rejection had stolen your voice, your spirit.

But this case? This case gave it back.

It gave you opportunities.

Opportunities to reclaim the life you once had. Opportunities to snap back into the person you were meant to be. It gave you opportunity to snap back at the person who you primarily accuse for your underconfident state.

No machine in this world could measure the amount of satisfaction you felt that night outside the club when you bailed out those feelings which held you hostage since six long years

Now, you no longer feared the crowds or their judgment. You no longer carried regrets that weighed you down. You stood here, in this moment, as someone who had learned to forgive—not just others, but yourself.

You had forgiven your mother for abandoning you. You had long forgiven your older brother. You never had grudges against him to start over.

And now?

Now, there was no one left to forgive.

No one but yourself.

And that, too, was already in motion.

Strange as it was, your entire character seemed to have evolved within the brief span of ten minutes—the time it took to turn away from Namjoon. It was as if every lesson you'd learned, every battle you'd fought within yourself, finally clicked into place.

For the first time in what felt like forever, you felt free—free from the invisible chains that had kept you tethered to your past. The insecurities, the self-doubt, the rejection that once weighed so heavily on your shoulders—all of it seemed to dissolve in an instant, leaving behind a version of you that was lighter, stronger, and finally at peace.

But peace never lasts long.

You had already made your way toward the exit of the courtroom, your hand brushing against the heavy doors, when you heard it.

"Y/N!!"

Namjoon's voice rang out, loud and desperate, cutting through the murmurs of the crowd like a sharp blade.

You froze, your breath catching in your throat. Slowly, you turned back to face him, your heart pounding with a mixture of confusion and unease.

What you saw left you utterly baffled.

Namjoon, who was always so composed, so unshakably calm, was standing there with an expression you'd never seen before. His brows were furrowed, his lips parted as if searching for the right words, and his eyes—his eyes were filled with something raw and unspoken.

He took a step toward you, his movements hesitant but purposeful. The courtroom seemed to fade around you, the murmurs of the reporters, the shuffling of feet—all of it melted into the background.

"Please," he said, his voice softer this time but no less intense. "Don't go just yet."

There was a vulnerability in his tone that startled you, a crack in the wall of professionalism he always carried so effortlessly. And for a moment, you wondered if he was about to say something that could change everything all over again.

Time seemed to stretch endlessly, the weight of his words pressing down on you as you waited, uncertain, on the cusp of yet another turning point.

"I LOVE YOU!!"

The words struck like a lightning bolt, leaving the room stunned. Every eye turned toward him, but his focus stayed locked on you. His voice echoed in your ears, and for a moment, you forgot to breathe.

Your hands went cold, a slight tremor running through them as you turned to face him fully. His face was flushed, his breathing uneven, but his eyes burned with an intensity that made your chest tighten.

You stood frozen, unable to move, unable to speak. Was this really happening? The confident, composed Namjoon, you thought you knew was now standing there, raw and exposed, pouring his heart out in front of everyone.

The air felt heavy, the silence deafening. You barely registered the murmurs and stares around you as Namjoon took a hesitant step toward you, then another.

"Knowing you loathe me... still, I love you," he said, his voice breaking slightly, every word filled with vulnerability.

The sincerity in his tone made you waver. Your mind raced, trying to process his words, his feelings, the weight of this moment.

"Since years... since the day I finally understood you," he continued, his voice faltering but determined.

His steps were slow but deliberate, closing the space between you. Each one made your heart pound harder, the walls you'd built around yourself shaking with every step.

"I can't let you walk away with my life on the line like this," he said, his tone firmer now, yet still pleading.

You felt his words in your chest, heavy and insistent, tugging at emotions you'd buried deep.

"Our bond is not something you can just label as professionalism, Y/N," he said, his voice softening, his eyes searching yours for understanding.

Your mind screamed at you to say something, anything, but the words wouldn't come.

"My heart," he added with a small, pained laugh, "is way too fragile to accept that."

He hesitated, his voice dropping almost to a whisper. "You are my muse, my anchor—the reason I've been able to function all these years, even when we were apart."

The raw honesty in his voice cracked something inside you.

"Our bond is..." He faltered, his gaze dropping for a moment before meeting yours again, desperate and unwavering. "It's something deeper than words, stronger than logic."

The trembling in your hands spread to your chest, a whirlwind of emotions swirling inside you.

"I know," he said, his voice barely audible now, "a bastard like me doesn't deserve you. Logically, I have no right to ask this of you, but... can we—can we forget the logic for once? You're not just someone I admire, Y/N. You're someone I need."

His words hit like a tidal wave, threatening to pull you under.

"I—I won't be able to live without you... I just can't," he said, his voice breaking again, his vulnerability on full display.

"Min Y/N," he said, his voice trembling but determined, "I love you. Just... have mercy on me. I deserve some happiness too."

You stood there, overwhelmed, your heart racing and your mind in chaos. The vulnerability in his words, the sheer desperation in his eyes—it was almost too much to bear.

What could you even say? How could you respond to a confession so raw, so unfiltered, so utterly... Namjoon?

"Noona?"

The sudden husky voice startled you so badly that your phone slipped from your hand, clattering to the floor. Heart pounding, you turned sharply to see Jungkook standing behind you, a concerned frown creasing his face.

"They won't increase if you keep staring at them," he said softly, gesturing toward the shelf of face wipes you'd unknowingly been fixated on while lost in thought.

"I... I wasn't," you stammered, quickly brushing off your lapse.

Jungkook smiled gently, holding out a steaming plastic cup of coffee. "Aren't you tired, Noona? Want some coffee? I just made it."

His kindness felt like a small yet much-needed comfort. Jungkook had recently resumed his part-time job here, though it hadn't been easy. You had quietly pulled some strings to ensure his name was removed from the Vixen's club records, freeing him from the shadow of that place.

He deserved better. Much better.

Jungkook hadn't left your side since the day you were both discharged from the hospital. Even when your family insisted on moving you back to Daegu to recover, he stayed in touch, checking in on you like clockwork.

You still remembered how worried you'd been for him during the chaos surrounding the hearing. A mere university student wouldn't stand a chance against a mafia's retaliation, and the thought of something happening to Jungkook kept you awake at night.

But those fears had been eased when Jung Hoseok stepped in, taking responsibility for ensuring Jungkook's safety.

Now, standing here, watching the same bright-eyed boy who had risked so much for you offering you coffee with an easy smile, you couldn't help but feel a pang of gratitude—and a touch of guilt

Jung Hoseok, as you had often felt, was an odd presence in your life. He appeared and disappeared as he pleased, leaving you wondering if he was even real sometimes.

He had vanished again, just like before. The last time you'd heard about him was when you learned he was the one who told your father and Seokjin about the Vixen's club address. That had been months ago, and now, two months had passed without a single clue about his whereabouts.

You were alone in Seoul. Your brother and father had returned to your hometown to manage the company, and Jackson was tied up with firm work in Daegu, handling major cases.

With no family around, Jungkook became your go-to person. Day and night, you sat with him, pouring out your thoughts. He didn't always understand what you meant, but he listened patiently, giving you the space you needed.

"Noona! Are you daydreaming again?" Jungkook's voice broke through your thoughts, making you flinch once more.

Your anxiety was getting worse, clouding your mind and leaving you in a constant fog.

"Hmm?" You quickly refocused on him, trying to show you were paying attention.

Jungkook was holding a thick book and a rough notebook, both of which he suddenly placed in your lap. His quiet smile told you he was trying, in his own way, to distract you from your spiraling thoughts.

"Help me understand these articles! I have a presentation in six hours," Jungkook pleaded as he flipped open the thick book in front of you.

"Don't you need sleep, Jungkook?" you asked, genuinely curious. You were amazed at how he managed to juggle working overnight while still preparing for college.

"Don't you need sleep, Noona?" he shot back with a cheeky grin.

"Are you making fun of me?" You narrowed your eyes at him, half-serious.

"I wouldn't dare! My internship is on the line here," he said, shaking his head while sipping his drink.

"Yeah, forget about working with me," you teased, a small smile tugging at your lips.

"NOOO!" Jungkook dramatically palmed his chest as if he had been shot, earning a light smack on his cheek from you.

Your hit wasn't hard, but it still left a faint pink imprint of your fingers on his soft skin.

"Why is your skin so... baby-like?" you muttered, clicking your tongue as you rubbed his cheek to soothe the redness.

Jungkook was over the moon, his heart practically soaring. He silently vowed never to wash his cheek again.

"Don't even think about it," you warned, easily reading the dreamy expression on his face. His fanboy tendencies were getting out of hand.

"Go wash your face with water right now," you ordered, pointing toward the bathroom.

He pouted but nodded reluctantly, mumbling, "This is a crime!" before running off to the bathroom, leaving you shaking your head with a mix of amusement and exasperation.

It was clear as a day that Jungkook's doubts were just part of his plan to divert your mind. After all, he was the topper of his batch—there was no way he'd be stuck on the meaning of a simple word.

Still, ignoring the obvious, you went along with his act, explaining the concept in detail and even teaching him extra just to fill the silence.

"Sir Yoongi really broke his jaw," Jungkook muttered quietly in the middle of your study session.

The memory of that day flashed in your mind. How could you forget the consequences of Namjoon's bold confession? He had earned a jaw-breaking punch from your brother.

"If you ever spew such nonsense again," Yoongi had hissed with cold fury, "I'll make sure you don't live to regret it."

"He got gauze plastered today," Jungkook added, still scribbling down notes, his tone casual as if talking about the weather.

"Concentrate," you warned sternly, narrowing your eyes at him.

In response, Jungkook simply smiled—a soft, unbothered grin that said he knew exactly what he was doing.

The next 20 minutes passed in focused silence as the study session wrapped up.

You bid farewell to Jungkook as the store prepared to close for its early morning break, shutting down at 5 a.m. to reopen again at 8.

"Go safely, and don't hurt your legs," you warned him, your tone firm but caring.

Jungkook nodded enthusiastically, flashing you a bright smile before bowing a full 90 degrees. Then, like clockwork, he sprinted off, knowing he'd have to climb over the wall of his hostel—his daily routine since they didn't allow students to work and locked the gates at 10 p.m.

You sighed, rubbing your tired eyes as you watched him disappear into the distance. Glancing at your wristwatch, you noticed there were still fifteen minutes to go before 5 a.m.

Stuffing your hands into your coat pockets, you turned and started walking home. The convenience store was a fifteen-minute walk from your place, and despite the biting morning chill, you chose to walk. The streets were eerily quiet, the silence wrapping around you like a heavy blanket, leaving you alone with your thoughts.

You should be terrified to walk alone at night after everything that happened—the kidnapping, the fear of being at the mercy of a psycho. Anyone else in your shoes would feel their heart race at every shadow, their pulse quickens at every stray sound.

But you weren't frightened now, knowing the Vipers were finished?

"He got gauze plastered today..."

Jungkook's words echoed in your mind, loud and persistent, breaking through the silence around you. Anxiety never lets you focus on just one thought. It jumped from worry to worry, memory to memory, leaving you overwhelmed and restless.

And now, the strangest thought lingered. Was it Stockholm syndrome if you admitted you felt bad that Namjoon got punched like that?

Yoongi's actions were justified, no doubt. Namjoon had crossed a line with his dramatic confession, in public no less. Still, the image of him bruised and bandaged, the weight of his unfiltered feelings hanging heavy in the air—it stirred something in you that you didn't want to name.

What was wrong with you? You shook your head, as if that could silence the whirlwind inside. But the questions remained.

He confessed his love to you. His love.

What kind of sorcery was this?

Your life, in all its chaos, had revolved around that L word, starting with it, breaking because of it, and now, it seemed like you were at a juncture where the circle was about to complete itself.

But what were you supposed to feel in this situation?

Blessed? Or disgusted?

Should you have been the one to punch Namjoon for his audacity instead of Yoongi? Or should you have dropped to your knees right then and there, letting your walls crumble, and accepted his feelings?

But hold on...

How dare he?

The sheer nerve, the audacity to blurt out that word in front of a crowd, in front of you.

You had made it clear, crystal clear, when you told him you loathed him for what he had done. Wasn't that enough?

Him and you?

It was impossible—at least, that's what you had convinced yourself.

And yet... why was your chest tightening now? Why did your mind refuse to let go of the way he had looked at you, raw and vulnerable? Why did his words feel like they were still hanging in the air, waiting for you to catch them?

No, you shook your head. Him and you... could never happen.

"He humiliated me, that brutally, and then had the audacity to confess to me?!"

The thought alone sent a wave of anger crashing over you. Your fists clenched at your sides as your pace quickened, the cool morning air doing little to calm the storm raging inside you.

"What does he think of himself?" you muttered under your breath, your voice laced with venom. "Does he think I'm some kind of freeloader? Someone who would just accept him whenever he decides he wants me?"

Your blood was suddenly boiling, the betrayal and frustration from the past resurfacing like fresh wounds. You could feel the heat creeping up your neck, your thoughts a chaotic mess of disbelief and indignation.

How dare he?

How dare he think he could waltz back into your life, ignore the scars he left, and throw around words like love as if they could magically fix everything.

The nerve, the sheer nerve of that man.

Your steps grew heavier as your emotions swirled into a fiery storm, threatening to consume every rational thought you had.

"I FUCKING HATE—"

"Don't do this grave mistake, Baby...."

The voice, low and husky, slid into your ear like a blade, sharp and chilling.

Your heart plummeted.

An ear-wrenching scream tore from your throat, raw and primal, the sound scratching its way out as if trying to claw through the terror gripping you. You stumbled back, your mind racing, spinning, failing to process the sheer horror of the moment.

Whipping around, your wide eyes locked onto the figure standing far too close for comfort.

"Don't disrespect his love like that... Namjoon doesn't deserve your hate as you think..."

The words hit you like a slap, a cold wave of shock crashing over your entire body.

"W-What?"
