2- Bow
David Chris Scarzone.
He honestly didn't mind the Waru. He lived in the desert but not too deep in the desert. Of the 1000 years of the Waru's reign people had adapted. Yes, he understood why people hated the Waru and didn't understand why anyone would support the Waru but it wasn't all that bad.
Call him an optimist sure, but he believed in the legend. He just didn't tell anyone he did. They would laugh. No one else believed. Well, at least not in his village. He knew this because when all the teenagers got together they would talk bull about the legend. David was the only one who didn't talk during it. He avoided it altogether.
He did tell one person he believed other than his sister. She was the one who kept him out of the conversations, interrupting when they asked David what he thought. Hayley, nice girl but she was only a friend to David. She was homosexual after all. She was David's best friend, he had other friends of course but he couldn't tell any of the others that he believed. He couldn't tell Hayley's girlfriend, Rosie. He couldn't tell his guy best friend, Dennis. He couldn't tell anyone else. It would result in friendships broken if he was honest.
"David!" A voice shrieked. A very familiar voice. Rosie.
"Hey Rose, where's Hayley?" David asked once he saw her approaching him.
"No love for Dennis?" A tall blonde asked, coming from behind Rosie laughing, followed by Hayley.
"Nope, sorry dude. I hate you." David laughed back. "We going somewhere today?"
"Yep, Mini Hill." Hayley smiled, taking David and Rosie by the wrists and dragging them with her. Dennis was grabbed by David.
Mini Hill was a small spot where they would be left alone. The Waru Watchers, as the four liked to call them, wouldn't mind if they hid over there. It would be stupid to try and run away. They were in a freaking desert after all. The food and water they got on a daily basis was from the Waru so they would probably die from dehydration or lack of food if they ran. Running away was basically suicide.
When they got to Mini Hill they sat down with their back to the sand. They were facing away from their small village. Hayley and Rosie were being all lovey-dovey so Dennis and David decided to talk.
"Hey, do you think the legend is going to be fulfilled today?" Dennis joked. He was again making fun of the legend. David just nervously laughed along and didn't give an answer.
He honestly hoped one of the heroes wasn't going to be Dennis. He was a bit annoying sometimes and it's hard to convince him he's wrong. He was stubborn. David knew it wasn't going to be him though. He was too scared of death. He was too young to die. He did hope it was Hayley though. Even though the last heroes had all been males, it might be possible that there would be a girl hero. He would be very sad if she died though. It was a dangerous task if he was honest. Besides, there were many villages and only six heroes. He might not even know who the heroes are personally.
"Hey Hayley, David. Dennis and I are going to head home. It's been a long day and we have to get up early tomorrow to help my dad out." Rosie said getting up, rubbing the sand off of her pants. Dennis did the same.
Dennis and Rosie were somehow related to each other, David wasn't exactly sure how though.
So when they left he and Hayley talked for a while. Then she told him that she had to go now. David didn't want to go home just yet so he stayed where he was.
The sun was setting and it was a beautiful sight. He wished he could share this moment with some of his friends but they had already gotten home. He was about to head home too when a strong wind started. It was so strong that David was knocked into Mini Hill. When he opened his eyes after the impact he saw sand flying everywhere. A sandstorm had started. The weird part was that it was missing David completely. The sand seemed to be parted for him.
He was going to try to walk home again when he saw writing in the sand in front of him which wasn't there a second ago. David read it carefully.
One, Two, Three, Four, Five, Six
A horrible error you must fix,
Let your real feelings about the legend show,
For you are the next Keeper of the Bow
"Wait, Keeper of the what?" David asked out loud after the writing was overcome by other grains of sand, showing no sign that the writing was ever there.
When the sandstorm stopped abruptly David was confused as heck. He decided that he had been hallucinating and turned back so he could walk back to his home. But as he turned back he saw something glistening in Mini Hill. It's colour clashed with the sand but it seemed to be the somewhat same colour.
David reached out and grabbed the item along with some sand. He pulled it out carefully and he immediately knew what it was. It was an archer bow. He saw an indenting on the surface of the bow which read, K.o.t.B.
David didn't have time to react to the strange initials because Mini Hill seemed to be moving. Before he knew it, Mini Hill basically fell on top of him. He knew he should be suffocating right now but he could breathe. He could breathe but he still felt like fainting. So he did just that.
