Chapter 2

The nurse came back with a bowl that reminded Mittens of the soup bowl that Matilda never let Mittens get ahold of. It was filled with warm milk. Back at home Matilda was getting worried. She had asked the store clerk and even her rude neighbor, Samantha. Nobody had seen her poor, poor, Mittens. At the hospital, Mittens was happily dreaming of catching that butterfly she had never got ahold of, her stomach full of exactly one and a half bowls of milk and a piece of bread Robert had gave to her from part of his dinner which included cheddar cheese on garlic bread a small slice of chocolate cake which he had, much to Mittens dismay, eaten away from her. The next morning it was bright and sunny.

Mittens knew what she had to do. Mittens stretched out and jumped through Robert's first-story window.

When Mittens got home, Matilda was waiting at the door. When she saw Mittens she scooped her up and hugged her so tight she thought she was going to burst. "Where were you, you little rascal?" scolded Matilda as she a nice bowl of cold milk. Mittens only drank part of it because she was still full from the night before. Matilda got up when a knock sounded on the door. At her open door there stood a tall man with light brown hair in a Russian military uniform. Matilda gasped and thrust the door back closed. For a moment she felt relieved for a moment until a silver point poked through the door. Matilda grabbed her vase full of daisies she had got for Christmas. She held the vase tight in her left hand. Mittens ran under the table. There was a splintering crack coming from the entry way. Mittens knew what that meant, too. He had busted through the door. Matilda threw the vase and flowers at the soldier. It hit his head and he fell to the ground, dropping his knife. Mittens crouched down as Matilda scooped her up into a warm hug. The soldier was unconscious.

The next morning Mittens had to find out a way to show Matilda the hospital- but how? Today Mittens ate all of her Kitty Casserole, it was her favorite, and Mittens set off to go to her work. Mittens begged Matilda to bring her on a walk. The great thing about Matilda, Mittens thought, is that she understands me. The grass was was dusted gray with about three kitten-sized holes in the ground. Mittens ran away from Matilda, towards the hospital. They were already almost there. Mittens looked over her shoulder. Matilda was gaining on her. Mittens stopped at the hospital. The man with big paws didn't open the door. She would have to. Mittens rammed into the door. It didn't budge. Matilda grabbed Mittens and pushed open the door.

Inside Mittens realised it looked busier than yesterday. Mittens' heart sank. That wasn't a good sign. Mittens jumped out of Matildas arms and ran to Roberts' room- Room 137. Robert was sleeping, his snores filling the room. Not for long, Mittens thought. Mittens playfully pounced on Robert. Roberts' eyes shot open and let out a short girl-like scream. "Mittens!" Matilda said, embarrassed. "Hey, who are you? Is this your cat?" Robert asked Matilda, smiling. "Um... Er... Ya." Said Matilda, placing Mittens back down on his lap. "Do you know her?" Matilda asked. "Ya, she came in the day before last, when I woke up yesterday morning she was gone. I was worried something had happened to her." Robert said. "How's the war going?" He asked. Matilda looked down at the table beside him and saw a folded up military uniform. Her eyes widened. "Well, a Russian soldier broke into our house last night, nobody was hurt, though." Except for the soldier, Mittens thought.

That night Mittens and Matilda slept on the floor of the hospital on one of Roberts' pillows. Matilda was fixing to go sleep. She overheard a conversation going on outside Room 137. "We can't take care of all these people, there's only twelve of us." One nurse said. "Yes, but how would we get more? Everyone already has a job, and everybody knows ther's hardly any teens or kids around here." The other nurse said. "Good point... But we have to do something." Matilda didn't hear anymore. She went to sleep. The next day for breakfast Matilda had a banana and orange juice. Robert had a muffin and orange juice part of which he gave to Mittens. Mittens stretched and went outside. Matilda watched her go. Outside it was an ash-gray color darkened but not washed away by the fresh dew. A fiery-colored Scottish Fold kitten was on the concrete that led to the Hospital.

Mittens meowed to the kitten, who looked extremely young. The cat meowed back to Mittens. "Can I trust you?" The kitten asked. "Yes, you can trust me. What's your name?" Mittens asked. "My name is Cloud." Cloud ran away, not looking back. Mittens felt disappointed as she walked back inside the hospital. Inside the patients were finishing off their breakfasts, Matilda hogging down her banana. Mittens jumped onto Roberts' cott. "Well, we have to go now." Said Matilda. So off they went. For some strange reason Mittens didn't want to leave the hospital it had became like a second home to her. And after what felt like hours of walking they were finally home. Matilda looked at the remains of there cornfields with a sad look on her face.''This is just the beginning''

When they went in the house they saw another cat in the house. Mittens bolted after it but it was fast. Then, eventually, Mittens caught up to the brown tabby. She gasped for breath and stared at it. "What are you doing here?
