Simple. Take your characters, describe their personalities in terms of strengths and weaknesses, and we're done.
Yes, this is just an excuse to talk about my characters. I make no apologies. I send no compliments to your mother.
*Key* Book title listed is the first book in which the character makes significant appearance; ages listed correspond to the character's age for the greater part of the book.
Murcod (The Claw; male; 29)
Strengths: Easygoing and approachable. Knows how to laugh at himself and makes the most of it. Stubbornly loyal, will not only be there for you but ask how he can help. Strong follow-through skills on anything that holds his interest. Invariably willing to take a minute to lend a listening ear or chat.
Weaknesses: His laidback attitude can be a liability to personal and career advancement, as he will let opportunities pass by rather than put in the effort to try something new. When he gets a notion in his head, no matter how objectively improbable/unworkable, he cannot be dissuaded from it and may neglect other responsibilities in pursuit. May "smother" a friend with concerned attention and efforts at solving his/her problems. Has broad leaps of intuition in solving problems but difficulty in articulating the connective dots.
Random fun fact: Murcod is not physically attractive at all.
Laufeia (The Village; female; 16)
Strengths: Hard worker, resilient physically and emotionally, quick to assess the needs of others. When her anger is roused, she is capable of inspiring prompt intimidation and obedience. Despite a reserved demeanor and strong social tact in casual settings, she will express herself fluently and boldly to her loved ones. Detects inconsistencies and insincerity with ease.
Weaknesses: Does not easily initiate physical or emotional contact. May not step into a situation despite seeing the need to intervene, experiencing a feeling of numbness, helplessness, or paralysis and of watching the inevitable unfold. Easily frustrated by small things out of place or her own clumsiness. Has anxious tendencies and is unwilling to trust her gut feelings, confusing them easily with fretting and hyperfixation. Used to "mothering" her two older brothers, she may become overly assertive or critical and fail to listen to the real issue at hand.
Random fun fact: Laufeia's hair reaches her feet when unbraided.
Inspector Wilhelm Dickson (The Claw; male; 31)
Strengths: Dedicated to his calling; persistent, refuses to give up; strives for punctuality, accuracy, and thoroughness. Is quick to notice patterns and pick up on past mentions of a name, event, situation, etc. Functions well as a group leader and has excellent instincts for danger. When a person is an object of focus, he will be very aware of his/her changes in attitude/emotion. Sensitive to comfort and aesthetic appeal; maintains a clean and pleasant dwelling and tries to keep things in good repair.
Weaknesses: Short temper when faced with any sort of irritation; tries to restrain its outer manifestation but will quickly become brusque and snappish. Easily becomes wrapped up in his own projects/missions and does not transition well to an external focus. Has difficulty coping with intense sensory input or physical discomfort. While he cares deeply for people, he may fail to show what they feel is adequate affection, not realizing or remembering their need for explicit affirmation. May grow too comfortable in his own routine; averse to trying new things and deals poorly with unexpected change.
Random fun fact: Inspector Dickson had one shortlived romantic relationship at the age of 17 and proceeded to be single for the next 14 years.
Irene Grey (The Village; female; 16)
Strengths: High pain tolerance and physical endurance. Very slow to become emotionally overwhelmed. Gives "tough love" and solid advice for overcoming personal obstacles. Highly efficient, bold and uncompromising, honest with herself as well as others. Has an unrecognized flair for the dramatic. Is not arrogant or condescending; will unhesitatingly sacrifice personal gain for longterm goals or the safety of someone she has chosen to affiliate herself with.
Weaknesses: Abrasive, short-tempered, cynical. Has developed a pessimistic view of the world and persists in it, to the detriment of her relationships with others. Prefers to distance herself from others' problems rather than actively participating in solutions. Does not experience typical empathy, has a hard time putting herself in another's shoes. Is indifferent to authority figures and may offend someone by failing to respect protocol or societal expectations. Rarely sees the need to apologize, even when she was in the wrong.
Random fun fact: Irene's character started out as a Red Cross nurse.
Margaret Thorne (Sorrow and Song; female; 24)
Strengths: Spirited and industrious, has a strong adventuresome side tempered with common sense and a love for stability. Draws people with her playful, charismatically independent attitude. Earnest; has a deeply contemplative side and is willing to empathize or have a heart-to-heart about any struggle. Will champion those who can't defend themselves.
Weaknesses: Vain, occasionally petty. May resent someone else taking the limelight. Her temper rises easily at any perceived offense to her dignity, and in its grip she is liable to exaggerate her emotions and call names or make threats she will regret. Is prone to forming negative opinions about people rashly and speaking ill of them to others. Can be unhealthily competitive, and may allow a lighthearted rivalry to form into a longterm grudge.
Random fun fact: In our world, Margaret would be a stellar pianist.
Captain Rhodes (The War; male; 28)
Strengths: Earnest, sympathetic; quick to please. Possesses a friendly, disarming demeanor that sets people at ease and makes him an excellent listener. Is sensitive to others' boundaries and desires the best for his loved ones. Forgives wholeheartedly. Seeks to live in consistency with his own principles and learn from his mistakes.
Weaknesses: Conflict-avoidant, tends to rely on passive-aggressive mechanisms when upset with someone. His longing for approval can turn on him, causing him frustration and despondency when he cannot achieve it. Will snap emotionally when under strain and become unexpectedly brusque and angry, also making poor impulse decisions. Despite being an incredibly poor liar, he may attempt to dissemble at times rather than confront someone with a brutal but necessary truth. Is a natural follower rather than a leader, and is out of his element when making strategical or tactical decisions.
Random fun fact: Rhodes names the dragons in the Mitheren run.
Captain Murray (The War; male; 29)
Strengths: Capable, courageous, and efficient, excels at managing plans and people. A man of his word; will remain loyal even to his own hurt. Respects authority divisions but does not follow orders blindly. Inspires obedience and discipline, and does not show favoritism. Is a good teacher, severe front notwithstanding; metes out approval where it is deserved.
Weaknesses: Does not connect well with people, and rarely tries to, regarding himself as a lost cause when it comes to friendships. His isolated, lone-wolf attitude makes him a target for criticism and gossip. Overly competitive, having a desire to prove himself to a world he sees as his enemy. Harshly judgmental of perspectives that conflict with his own. Struggles with governing his anger, which can be near-murderous.
Random fun fact: In draft one, Murray married the palace's cleaning lady.
I was gonna do two more characters but I'm out of brain cells and I want to clear this out of the way because my brain is saying, "Squirrel!" and chasing after the abandoned writing. So...
