Mari picks up the photo and shows it to Vanessa.

MARI
Who's this?

Vanessa looks as if she has been punched in the gut as she stares at the picture with a slightly open mouth.

VANESSA
(recovering)
Uh, that's Hannah.

MARI
Who?

Vanessa stares at her hands, picking at her fingernails. She finally raises her gaze to meet Mari's, shaking her head slightly and forcing a smile.

VANESSA
My daughter.

MARI
Oh. Where is she now?

VANESSA
She, um...
(briskly)
She died. During the Salem Witch Trials.

EXT. OLD-FASHIONED HOUSE - DAY - FLASHBACK

Vanessa bends down slightly to meet the gaze of Hannah, a cheery, dimpled girl who is smiling up at her mother.

VANESSA
We'll be back before you know it. We just need to help the clan get situated. We can't stay here any longer. Will you be okay?
