Chapter 35

The girls had kicked all of the males out of the basement. A group of the vampires had decided to go to a local club and they invited Anna and the men. They were getting ready in the basement of the church.

Anna had spent all day avoiding Rhys. She did not want to be around Drew either because she kept thinking back to their kisses when she saw him. She convinced Huxley to go out on a hike with her so that she did not have to face either of them.

Anna pulled the dress Alice had bought her out of the bag. Alice, who slipped a black dress over her head, smiled when she saw it in Anna's hands.

"You kept it, Stretch?" she asked.

"I had to pack in a hurry," Anna said. "I grabbed everything I could."

"You know you can admit to liking things," Alice said. She turned around and lifted her curly hair. "Zip me up, please."

Anna zipped up the back of Alice's dress. Alice dug through her bag for her make-up. Anna removed her dirt caked jeans from her earlier hike with Huxley. They were joking around and slipped in the mud a few times. She changed into the red dress.

She looked around the basement to see that the vampires had broken off into groups of two and were doing each other's make-up. It must be hard to apply eyeliner when you can not see your own reflection. Alice sat down on her cot. She patted the blanket in front of her, motioning for Anna to sit down. Anna obliged.

"So tell me how your week and a half of being a vampire has been," Alice said.

Anna shrugged her shoulders.

"I should be writing midterms around now," she said. "Preparing for a war was not what I was anticipating."

Alice chuckled and it caused Anna to smile.

"How has Rhys been?" Alice asked.

"He's been stubborn and moody ever since I met him," she said.

"That would be Rhys. Have you slept with him yet?"

Anna's jaw dropped. She let out a nervous giggle and shook her head. Alice winked as she pulled out some eyeliner.

"You can tell me if you have," she said. "I promise I will not say anything."

"We have not," Anna said.

"You have kissed though, right? Made out a little."

"No."

Alice raised an eyebrow.

"Are you serious?" she said. "Rhys is all over you. He is never like that."

Anna sucked in her bottom lip. She did not know if she should mention to Alice that Rhys has fed her his blood. It seemed like a dirty secret that she was not supposed to tell anyone.

She was also unsure if she should mention Drew's kiss. She knew Rhys would be furious if he knew. She did not want it to get back to him. She knew that she could no longer confide in Huxley. If he fell into Lucia's hold again he may tell her.

"Close your eyes," Alice told Anna.

She closed her eyes and Alice applied the make-up to her face. They were silent as Alice concentrated. It left Anna alone with her racing mind. After she was finished, Anna applied Slice's make-up.

Alice brushed Anna's hair, and the tightness of worry returned to her chest.

--

Standing outside the club, in the dark and listening to the thudding music, brought Anna back to when she was at the club with Jess. The line was short and Anna was thankful because she was shivering in her short dress.

When they approached the line, Anna saw that the girls were dressed in skimpy outfits, but they looked different. They had on cat ears, devil horns, or halos. She also saw a man in a cop uniform and another one wearing a fake mustache. She realized that this was a Hallowe'en themed night.

"Shouldn't we be wearing a costume?" Anna asked Alice.

Rhys had tried to put his hand around Anna's waist on the walk over. Anna forced herself to step back and join Alice and Nelly. She noticed that Rhys kept looking back at her.

"We are wearing costumes," Alice said. "We are vampires."

Alice winked and Anna giggled. She hooked her arm with Anna's and they walked into the club.

The flashing lights and pounding music made Anna disorientated already. Alice pulled her through the crowd of people dancing to the middle of the dance floor. Alice began to dance. She swayed her hips and put her hands on Anna's shoulders. Anna did not move as her eyes darted around the club. She could see Rhys leaning up against the bar getting a drink.

"Come on, Stretch," Alice said. "Let loose."

"I don't really dance," she said.

"Let's go get a drink. One of the guys at the bar can get us one."

Anna shook her head. She wanted to stay away from the bar. She wanted to stay away from Rhys, despite the horrible urge to run over to him.

Anna tried her best to copy the way Alice was swaying her hips. Alice pulled Anna closer to her body. Anna had never danced this close to a man, let alone a woman.

They spent a few more songs gyrating to the music. Anna giggled and it caused Alice to laugh along. Sweat was building up on her skin.

A man put his hand on Alice's shoulder and she stepped back. The man was dressed like a prisoner in a black and white striped outfit.

"Hey girls," he said. Anna struggled to hear him over the music. "You look like you could use some company."

Alice smirked before she turned and wrapped her arms around his neck. She threw her head back in a laugh. Anna wondered why she was acting drunk, despite them not having a drink yet.

"We would love some company," Alice said.

Anna jumped when a hand touched her shoulder. She assumed it was Rhys until she looked at the bar. Rhys's eyes were locked on her as he leaned against the bar. He brought the bottle of beer up to his lips while staring at her.

Anna looked over her shoulder. A man was standing behind her. He was tall, almost as tall as Rhys, and had on a black cape. She assumed that he was supposed to be a vampire. He leaned down so that his lips were near her ear.

"I'm Roger," he said.

"Anna."

Roger smiled as he put his hands on her hips. Anna had the want to push him off of her and run over to Rhys. She looked back to see that Rhys was still watching. She knew that he was controlling her mind, and this built up rage in Anna. She reached up and wrapped her arms around Roger's neck.

"Dance with me," Anna said.

Roger nodded and pulled Anna even closer. It disgusted her to have Roger's body pressed against hers as they swayed from side-to-side.

"What are you supposed to be?" Roger asked.

Anna could smell the alcohol coming off of his breath. She forced a fake smile on her lips.

"I'm a vampire," she said.

"You don't look like one," he said.

"Sometimes vampires look like regular people."

Roger chuckled. He lowered his hands so that he could grab her ass. Anna grabbed his wrists and pulled him away. She was overcome with the want to have Roger be away from her. She knew that this was Rhys, so fighting against the control she wrapped her arms around him and buried her face in his neck.

Her stomach ached, and Anna realized that she had not fed since they were in Ottawa. She could feel the pulsing artery in Roger's neck. The faint but delicious smell of his blood lingered in her nose.

Anna's gums ached as he fangs protruded. No one could see her eyes go black because she kept her face in Roger's neck. She took in a deep breath of his scent.

Roger was ripped away from Anna. She looked to see Rhys standing behind them.

"Hey, man!" Roger said.

He tried to shove Rhys, but Rhys barely moved. Rhys balled up his fist and punched Roger in the face. Roger's hands flew up to his nose and blood gushed between his fingers. Anna salivated at the sweet smell. They had caught the attention of the people around them. Alice was struggling not to laugh.

Rhys grabbed Anna's arm and pulled her off of the dance floor. She struggled not to stumble in her heels. She could feel the anger radiating off of Rhys as he pulled her to the side of the club.
