Chapter 32
I finished making breakfast and divided the amount onto two plates. Then I walked into the bedroom. I couldn't help but smile as I watched Jeff's eyes open a little at the smell of fresh french toast and eggs. "Morning."
He sat up and smiled. "I'll never get used to cooked food. Especially when it's cooked for me." He muttered.
I set his plate down and sat down next to him with my own. "Did you sleep okay?"
He shrugged. "As well as ever."
I had been debating how to tell him about last night's decision all morning and I still didn't know how to break it to him. I knew for a fact he'd object. He always told me before that going back was too risky.
I ate slowly, still thinking. I didn't even notice him staring at me until he said, "Is something on your mind?"
I paused and set my fork down. "Not... hm... Well, I was wondering if I could go visit-"
"No."
I frowned and turned away. "You don't own me."
"I may not but, if you don't want to find yourself back in that hospital prison, then forget about 'visiting' anyone." He said it coldly.
I clenched my teeth and stood up. "I'll wash the dishes." I muttered and left the room. As I cleaned off plates and utensils I took my time and kept thinking.
I could just go on my own. He can't tell me what to do.
I finished washing everything and went back into the bedroom. As always, Jeff had already left. I wondered if he was shopping or if he was killing. I could never tell.
I went about making the bed and getting dressed. If I hurried I could make it to my neighborhood and back long before Jeff got home. I had plenty of time to go say hi and then get back to make dinner.
I smiled to myself and quickly changed. I grabbed some cash in case I wanted to get lunch and headed for the door. This would be easy.
I grabbed my jacket and stepped outside. Just as I was locking the door a voice said, "I had a feeling you'd leave."
I whipped around, my heart racing. "Jeff, you jerk! Don't scare me like that!" I glared at him. "And what do you mean 'leave'?"
He sighed and scratched his head. "Fine. I'll go with you but, you have to trust me and do what I say." He smiled. "Okay?"
I shook my head and went back to locking the door. "Alright, fine."
We walked through the trees and I was relieved he didn't seem too upset with me leaving the cabin on my own. I expected him to get angry at me.
I couldn't help smiling the last time I tried to leave alone.
***Flashback***
"Where are you going?"
"Just to the store. I wanted to see if they had anything on sale-"
"Are you stupid?!" He cut me off. "Your picture is everywhere. If so much as one person sees you they'd call the police. You can't go."
"But, I just-" I felt tears welling up.
"No! Stay in the cabin. I'll be back later. If you leave I'll find you." He said, his eyes narrowed in a glare.
***Flashback ends***
"What are you smiling about?"
I snapped out of my memories and shrugged. "Nothing."
He smirked. "That's my job." He pointed to his permanent grin and winked. I laughed. "You know, any other girl would've screamed and run for the hills."
He shrugged and wrapped an arm around my waist. "Lucky me. I got the one girl who won't."
I grinned. "Yup."
We talked on and off for the rest of our walk until we reached the highway. "Are you going to get us a ride?" I asked.
He nodded and pulled his hood up. "Stay close, okay?"
I nodded and it wasn't long before lone car came driving down the road. Jeff waved and it slowed. I smiled at the driver. "Hello, sir. Is there any way you'd let us ride in your trunk until, we reach the city?"
He smiled back at me. "Of course. Hop in."
Jeff frowned as I pulled him to the back and we both got in. Jeff waited until the car was moving again before he asked, "Why didn't you just let me kill him? We could've just taken the car for ourselves."
I rolled my eyes. "Yeah but, he was too nice. I didn't think it was right."
He huffed. "You're too nice. Be a little more heartless sometimes."
I just smiled and sat back. About an hour of driving later the guy stopped the car and we got out. "Thank you very much for the ride." I said.
He shrugged. "Couldn't leave a pretty girl on the side of the road now, could I?"
I felt Jeff's hold on my hand tighten and I pulled him away as the man drove off. "Please?" He said lowly.
I shook my head. "Come on. The neighborhood is only twenty minutes away."
We hurried the rest of the way, mostly staying in the shadows of alleys and other low populated places. When the neighborhood showed I couldn't help slowing my steps.
Jeff noticed and stopped. "Are you okay?"
I stared at the ground. "I just wonder if they even want to see me... To the rest of the world I'm a killer now... Is that how they see me too?"
He studied my face before he kissed my cheek. "Don't wory about it. They're your friends. They should know better than believe society over their loved ones."
I looked up and smiled. "Yeah... I guess you're right. Thanks, Jeff."
"Besides, if they try anything I can just dispose of them." He said with a grin.
I shoved his arm. "You will not! They are my friends!"
He laughed and we hurried to the park. It was empty, most kids being in school at this hour, and we picked a shady spot. "I still think about the time you first talked to me." I said.
"You mean the time I asked if you were scared of me?" Jeff asked.
I laughed. "You've asked me that on more than one occasion but, yes. You did ask me then."
He tilted his head. "I never did get a clear answer from you, did I?"
"Do you want one?"
"It wouldn't hurt."
I smiled and looked away. "Yes. I am scared of you."
His real smile vanished and his eyebrows came together. "But, why? I though you weren't scared anymore."
"No, I'm still afraid of you but, it's different. You have the power and the ability to kill me so of course I'd be scared. But, I know the real you and you'd never hurt me."
"You're wrong. I have the ability and the power but, I've always lacked on great piece to the puzzle." He said.
I frowned and he smiled, brushing my hair away from my face. "I don't have the mental strength. I couldn't kill you even if it would save the world. You're more important to me than anything."
I stared into his eyes then smiled. "I'm glad. That makes me really happy to hear." I leaned forward and pressed my lips to his. "You're just as important to me too."
The rest of the afternoon we talked and relived some of our time before. He told me how he saw me dressed as him for me and J.J.'s prank and I nearly died of embarrassment, telling him that it was all J.J.'s idea.
He laughed and we enjoyed ourselves until the sun started setting. We'd seen the kids get home from school hours before but, I'd said I wanted to wait until dark to see my friends.
"Think we should head over now?" Jeff asked.
I hesitated before nodding. "Yeah."
I knew that J.J. and Brandon met up at the school's basketball court every evening to practice. They'd be there by now and I wanted to talk to them together.
When we reached the court I could already hear them tossing the ball around and talking. I hesitated again but, Jeff took my hand. "Let's get this over with."
We walked around the corner and I saw my friends throwing the basketball back and forth with each other. "Watch it! I'm only a boy, J.J.!" Brandon laughed as the ball flew over his head.
J.J. smirked and ran to catch it before he did. "So? I'm only a girl!"
J.J. ran towards the ball which was rolling in our direction. Just as she picked up the ball she noticed us. Her eyes widened and she froze. Brandon had also seen us and was staring, a look of shock on his face. "Ca-... Candice?"
I smiled at them. "Hey, guys... Been a while."
Suddenly, J.J. ran at me, dropping the ball as she flung her arms around me. "Where the hell have you been? Idiot!"
I winced as she tightened her grip and buried her face in my neck. "We thought you'd left forever!"
I patted her back and pulled her away from me. "Nowhere special. I was just busy. Sorry, girl."
She glared at me but, I could see the tears in her eyes. "You could've called!"
"Sorry. No phone sevice in the middle of the woods is common." I said with a smile. She stared at me before she grinned. "Yeah... I guess you're right."
She glanced at Jeff and smiled. "Thanks for watching over her. She needed you."
He shrugged. "Of course."
I glanced behind J.J. and looked at Brandon. He was staring at mine and Jeff's clasped hands. I frowned and pulled away from J.J. "I need a minute alone with Brandon."
J.J. studied me before she nodded slowly. "Alight. Don't go and start fighting though."
I let go of Jeff's hand and he frowned. "Alone." I said.
He sighed and followed J.J. I turned back to Brandon and walked towards him. "Sorry I've been away so long."
He wouldn't look at me and I smiled sadly. "Was I missed? I'm sure everyone at school thinks I'm a murderer."
He glanced up at me. "Why are you back?"
"Because I am." I took his hands. "I'm sorry, Brandon. Can you ever forgive me? I didn't mean to hurt you like this. I thought you'd have moved on by now."
"Well, I haven't." He said sharply. He clenched his teeth and I smiled a little. "Thank you."
He frowned. "For what?"
"Loving me. I couldn't return your feelings but, at least I know that you really did love me."
He was silent and I looked down. "Do you hate me?"
He frowned. "Of course not! Why would you ever think that?! I-"
I looked up and smiled. "It's okay. You can hate me. I do kind if deserve it, right?"
He frowned and looked away. I went on my tip toes and kissed his cheek. His face turned red and he looked away. "What was that for?"
"Being you. Even as I stand here and give you so much pain... You still care. But, that's who you are and I'm glad to know you haven't lost that."
He stared at me for a long time. Then he smiled and hugged me. "I guess I didn't lose you. I never had you in the first place, did I?"
I hugged him back. "You had me. Just not as much of me as you wanted."

I walked next to Jeff slowly, enjoying the night air. He hadn't said a word since we left and I wondered if he was upset about something.
I was going to ask him when he said, "What did that kiss mean?"
I glanced at him and shrugged. "It was a friendly kiss. I was thanking him."
He pouted and turned away. "For what? All he ever did was annoy the crap out of everyone..."
I rolled my eyes and smiled. "Why are you all worked up? I only kissed his cheek."
He shrugged. "Just don't get too friendly with the enemy, okay?"
I scoffed. "He's only your enemy. Calm down."
He rolled his eyes and suddenly scooped me into his arms. "Just don't make me regret saving your little ass."
I laughed as he ran down the alleys with me in his arms. As he ran I thought about the future. I didn't know how log I'd survive with Jeff but, I was willing to try. For him and myself.
