Chapter 13

After that, Jeff came every night. Sometimes we'd talk for just a few minutes but, other times we'd stay up late and talk for hours. Usually to the point until I was almost asleep sitting up.

Brandon on the other hand had become a different situation all together. He had begun asking to sit with me and J.J at lunch and he would sometimes stop me in the hall just to 'Chit chat'. I wouldn't say things got awkward between us. Oh, no. We got closer as we talked more but, I always felt he had an alternate motive for wanting to talk to me.

It was a little unnerving. That's what I was thinking about when he asked me, "Hey, Candy, I wanted to go see that new movie, The Longest Ride. I was wondering if you wanted to come with me."

We were eating lunch in our usual spot behind the school. I sputtered on my lunch I tried to swallow my food without choking. "Uh... Sure. When were you planning to go?"

"This Saturday. Can you come?" He looked hopeful as he asked.

I glanced at J.J. who was eating her sandwich and pretending she wasn't listening. "I'll have to check my calendar but, I think I can..."

J.J nudged my foot and grinned while Brandon said, "Great! Can I see your phone?"

I shrugged and handed it to him. He fiddled with it and then he fiddled with his own. When he handed my phone back I saw he had put his number in it. "That way I can give you the rest of the information when I get it."

I nodded and put my phone away. "Okay.

J.J. was smirking and I rolled my eyes. "Can J.J. come? I'm just a little bit shy, you know?"

J.J kicked me but, I ignored her. Brandon seemed a little disappointed but, shrugged. "Sure... If she wants to..." I gave J.J. a triumphant look and she frowned. "Actually, I think I have something on Saturday."

Now it was my turn to kick someone. "No, you don't."

"Yeah, I do. My mom planned a get together with my family and I have to go." She raised her eyebrows in a silent challenge.

I glared at her. "Fine. I guess it'll just be me and Brandon."

Brandon didn't seem to notice the tension between us as he said, "Well, then. I'll text you the time when I buy tickets."

"Oh, I'll pay for my ticket." I said quickly.

He shook his head. "I'm inviting you so I'm paying. Besides, I want to." He smiled. "You don't have to worry about a thing."

I felt my cheeks heat up and I looked away. "Okay... If you're sure."

Lunch ended a little after that and we went to our next classes. For the rest of the day I thought about Saturday. I wasn't worried about it I just wasn't sure if I should trust Brandon not to make a move.

By the time school was over I was having a mental fight with myself. Half of me wanted to go because I knew that I did like Brandon more than a friend. The other half was telling me to call and cancel because I was too chicken to actually go. It was a very distracting fight.

I sighed while walking next to J.J. She was chatting on about how exciting it was to make a formula that worked and made the classroom really foggy.

We got to my house and I told my mom to tell us when dinner was ready before running upstairs. I walked into my room lazily, dropping my backpack in the corner, and J.J plopped, stomach down, on my bed. "So, what are you going to wear this weekend?" She asked.

I shrugged. "Probably nothing. I don't know if I'm going to really go."

Her jaw dropped. "You have to! He invited you specifically! Come on, Candy!"

I just shrugged again and sat down at my desk. "You know I don't have the guts to go. I'm not that kind if girl."

J.J. frowned at me. "But, you said you'd go! He's expecting to take you! For goodness sake's, he asked you out and you'd be turning him down before he even got a chance!" She sat up and crossed her arms. "Don't break his tiny baby heart!"

I rolled my eyes. "He'll be fine. He can get any girl he wants. Losing me won't kill him."

She huffed. "If he could get any girl he wants then why did he choose you? Obviously because you're different than all the sluts in school. He likes you, not me or the most beautiful girl in the world. You."

I groaned and pulled my legs up onto the chair. "But, what if I'm not right for him? I don't want to cause him trouble."

"You won't. I've known you for years and you've never once caused me trouble. If you do anything to him, it'll be making him and yourself the happiest people alive."

I turned towards my window and my mind flitted over Jeff's pale, bandana covered face. I frowned at the thought of the strange boy and turned back to J.J. "J.J. I just can't. I'm not ready for a relationship."

I pulled out my phone and quickly pulled up Brandon's number. I stared at for a while, ignoring J.J.'s frown. Then I took a deep breath and pressed the call button.

It rang only once before it was picked up and I heard Brandon's voice. "Hello? This is Brandon."

"Brandon? Hi, it's Candice."

"Oh, hi Candy! I was just about to call you. I got the tickets and the showing is at 3:00pm. Is that an okay time for you?"

I felt myself deflate and I sighed. "Yeah. That's great."

"Okay. I'll come pick you up at around 2:00pm." He paused. "Oh, you called. Did you need something?"

I shook my head to the phone as I said, "No. I was just making sure I had the right number."

He laughed. "Alright then. I'll see you at school tomorrow. Bye."

"Bye..." I hung up and sighed. J.J was smirking. "That didn't sound like a rejection to me." She said.

I shot her a look. "He already bought tickets. I couldn't turn him down."

She rolled her eyes. "Sure. You only said yes because of the tickets."

I ignored her and opened my laptop. I pulled up a game and started playing while she looked over her homework. Shortly after, my mom called us down for dinner and we had to abandon my room to go eat.
