Love and Evil
[Click the picture above to hear music composed by the author]
Once, in desperation,
I loved and lived with
One who had no heart.
Yet without sense or hesitation,
Let my own heart
Swoon and faint.
But soon,
Though I played
Lover to the letter,
I came to see
Our love served her
No better.
With she who loved me naught,
Who made indifference an art,
It took a lot of nerve.
To go on caring longer than I ought,
For thus were two fools had,
One smug, one sad.
The moral here,
The lesson taught,
Listen up, all ye
With ears to hear:
To love one who's ambivalent,
Love ain't,
That's the equivalent
Of torturing a saint.
To love with
No love back,
To give your warmth for cold,
To genuine affection lack,
Such a love will soon grow old,
Not a blessing but a curse.
So please excuse this little verse
Of love that went
From bad to worse.
Cast pity on a hollowed breast
Whose heart departed in a hearse.
