Chapter 1
Mistakes defy people in ways no philosophy could ever manage, and it shapes them into beings they themselves never thought they could become.
That is the very reason why people change, as well as the reason why we can't save anyone from themselves. The reason we end up hating people we once loved.
In his case, however, he had always fallen short in doing both when it came to her. His high school classmate and friend. The one that he had shared so much of his life with, as well as the one that ruined it.
"Luetta." Her name rolled out of his mouth as he saw her figure stepping out of the iron gates of the prison that had kept her in for five years now.
She proceeded to bow to the guards as she took her first steps into freedom. Her uncombed hair swayed in the wind as her hands brushed against the wrinkled clothes they had put her in. Then she finally turned around to face the empty road in front of her, with a wide smile on her face.
From afar, where he was observing her, he found himself wondering how she must be feeling after spending her youth behind bars. She was lucky she committed that crime while still being 17, and the juvenile system saved her from a certain life sentence.
He could still remember when she was being prosecuted, all the turmoil that was going on at their school, and how everyone had turned against her in a snap. How she had become a monster in a matter of days in the eyes of strangers and people that knew her alike.
Partially, maybe even in his eyes...and who could blame him. She was the reason someone's life was taken. Willingly or not.
Some certain mistakes cannot be forgiven, nor can they be undone, so with her youth she lost people too and maybe even a part of her own soul.
Unfortunately, not every soul that is lost is wanted back.
He observed her as she started walking down the street, with nothing but her clothes with her, and then he turned on the engine of his vehicle and drove closer, the sound making her look back as she became aware of a vehicle's existence.
She didn't move from the middle of the street that she was at despite seeing the car fast approaching, and he sped up without a care in the world, indecisive if he was going to step on the brakes at the last minute or should he just end this suffering for both of them, right then and there. But he was not someone who could go to such an extent to save anyone. Neither himself, hence, he brought his vehicle to a halt with a screech that brought a big smile to her face.
"And here I thought that you all had forgotten about me." Luetta's voice reached his ears after so long, and her cheerful eyes felt like they took captive his throat as he stepped out of the car and stood a few feet away from her. Finally face to face with his once best friend. 5 years had stood between them since the last time he had met her eyes.
"Jimin," She uttered his name with nostalgia as she stepped closer, joy beaming from her being as if she was the sunshine that was set free from the depths of hell. "I should have known. You of all people wouldn't forget about me."
Luetta's embrace felt warm as she threw herself into his arms and engulfed his being tightly, as if she had been desperate for human contact. Deprived of any security to hold anyone without the fear of being stabbed to death.
Jimin found himself perplexed as to whether she still trusted him that much and thought that he, of all people, should have forgiven her, or she just didn't mind dying by his hand. And knowing her, both were pretty possible. She was crazy after all. The kind of crazy he had once claimed to be his biggest entertainment.
"You have changed so much. Just what do they feed you in there?" Jimin commented as she pulled back, realising that her grip was strong despite her fragile-looking frame.
"Oh well, you know. Prison 5-star meals." She joked, and he found himself cracking a smile and shaking his head at her, for once more she had the energy to be humorous even in the most ridiculous situations.
"I bought Tofu for you. Not a 5-star meal, but I hope it will be to your taste, your majesty." He joked back as he pointed back to his passenger seat, finding himself leaning towards joy with her for a moment.
"Ah, keeping the typical traditions as always."She patted his back as she rushed to the passenger seat door and opened it, retrieving the bag with the tofu she found there.
Luetta opened it in a hurry and took a bite hastily, gaining a smile from Jimin as he watched her with eyes of the past and a heart that was getting flooded with the familiar feeling of friendship love they once shared for each other.
"Are you sure it's not poisoned?" She questioned, and he just started laughing as he went closer to her and smacked her at the back of her head.
"Idiot, that's the kinda question one asks before biting into the food, not after."
"Hey! How dare you call me an idiot? I am older than you!" She used her body to shove him aside while staring daggers at him, and he frowned back at her before using his lower body to push her back to the side.
" Barely 2 months older. Doesn't even count."
"Who says it doesn't count? Did you lose your manners after I got to prison? Just because no one was there to scold you doesn't mean you should go berserk." She took hold of his ear and pulled at it, making a painful expression appear on his face as he lowered his head and his hands reached to hers, cupping it in between, but not using force to take her hand away and free himself.
"Ah! Ah! It's not like that. I have good manners, just not with you!" He replied as the two went in circles in place, she pulling on his ear and he laughing in between the pain.
"Oh, so you don't respect me anymore cause I am a criminal now?" She let go of his ear, and the two faced each other as her words lingered in the air, but her smile remained on, lightening the weight of what she had said.
"Fair enough really. I won't complain." She hit him on the side of his arm and proceeded to enter the passenger seat while Jimin stood frozen, feeling bittersweet and unsure of what he was even doing anymore.
"Are you going to give me a ride, or did you just come to attempt to run me over?" Luetta's head popped out the window, uttering words that once more were way heavier than she was making them be, but she didn't even seem to be hurt by the fact that her best friend was torn between hating her and loving her.
Jimin made his way back to the driver's seat without uttering a word and turned on the engine; soon, the wind was blowing on her face and allowing her hair to flow back. Her palm rested outside the window, enjoying the air that was traveling through the cracks of her fingers, and her eyes kept taking in the sunlight, like she was trying to memorize every shade of it.
"It's not your fault." She murmured after a while, softly but loud enough for it to reach Jimin's ears and tug at his heart like a hook that had just pierced right through.
"I know...It's yours." He replied as his hold on the steering wheel grew tighter and Luetta turned to look at his side profile, smile still wide on her lips.
"That's right." She agreed without hesitation, eyes lowering down before she looked at the front again. "And I paid for it, so now we are both free." She added, then she reached her arm around Jimin's shoulder and left her hand rest at the back of his neck.
"Even though I will be on probation for 2 years, let's consider the punishment over. The sinner is almost done paying for her sins, so let's start living a beautiful life from now on." Jimin couldn't help but steal a glance to the side as he heard those words, meeting her hopeful gaze and that familiar expression of encouragement he had actually missed.
"I will get us the lives of our dreams. You will see. You can trust me, one last time." She requested as her palm tightened slightly around his neck, and he smiled as he looked back at the road again, recognizing well that determination in her eyes.
She was crazy. But she sure still knew him well enough to know how to get to him. Turning his back on her even after everything that had happened remained something he wasn't good at doing. For just like her, he kept his promises too, and she had saved him more times than she had let him drown.
"You better not mess this up, Lu. Cause I swear, this is gonna be the last time I take your side." He warned her, and she nodded in agreement, but she didn't seem to falter in her confidence.
"You will see. I will become the best thing that happened to you." She uttered, and they both ended up laughing out loud over how ridiculous that sounded.
---Change of set---
"Where is my phone?" Sania entered the living room of her estate, and Jungkook instantly threw the phone he was holding, landing in the hands of the staff member who was standing right after him at the morning dining table.
"Has anyone seen it? I am sure I had it by my bed when I woke up." She scratched her head as she halted before the full table, ignoring her brothers who were already seated in their respective places at the huge table.
"You must have dropped it on the way to the bathroom, My lady." The butler hurried to bow to her and offer her the phone back. "I found it lying on the floor." He shiftily excused Jungkook's action, as he had been the one who took it without her permission.
"I guess I must have been too sleepy." She shrugged her shoulders as she accepted her device, then she too took her seat near her older brother. Namjoon.
"Now that you all are finally here, I would like to remind you to behave yourselves today." Namjoon placed the kettleries he was holding aside and spoke to them as his gaze traveled from one to another. "Especially you, Sania."
"Me? Why would I ever bring problems?" She looked at him, confused, for according to her, if someone in that family was a troublemaker, that was Jungkook.
"Luetta is left on probation today...Don't go around causing any scenes." Namjoon warned her, knowing well the bad blood his little sister had with Miss Luetta Lee.
"That's today? Oh shit, I have to go help Jimin with the party." Jungkook stood up from his chair instantly as he had forgotten the date completely.
"Party? Since when is the fact that a murderer is getting freed something to celebrate?" Sania snapped at him, glaring at him with visible anger, for he couldn't stand either him or that fool of a boyfriend she had that was still running after this woman.
"It was an accident. She didn't deliberately run Orion over, and you know that!" Jungkook's face grew intense too as he replied, but the mentioning of the name of the deceased made the atmosphere instantly grow dangerous as Sania stood from her place ready to throw herself at him and start a physical fight.
"Enough!"Namjoon's booming voice halted her actions before they got to become reality; however, the two just stood there staring daggers at each other for a few seconds before Jungkook just turned around and left.
"I can't stand him! Why the heck did our dad have to go and have this kid too? Couldn't he make a better choice while choosing his mistress instead of going and finding such stupid genes!" She went off, speaking words that most had already heard plenty of times in that house.
It was known that despite the fact that Jungkook was brought over to the estate at a young age and grew up partially with his half-siblings, the two had a clear distinction towards him. Even Jungkook was aware of it, for they had refused to allow their dad to give him their surname, hence, he still had his mother's while they proudly carried the Kim family line as the rightful heirs to the wealth their grandfather had built.
Sania was the one who was mostly seen debating and fighting with Jungkook; however, for the eldest son, Namjoon always appeared more collected with his way of expressing himself, yet everyone knew well that he would take his sister's side without hesitation. She was his full blood after all.
"Sania, don't say such things." Despite that, however, he still held his sister accountable for her use of words when in public.
She looked at him, annoyed, while she crossed her arms and sat down, in her head boiling over the unfairness of life and the law that allows such people as Luette to walk free even after what she had done.
"Call your friends and go have a good day out; don't think too much about this," Namjoon advised her as he stood from his seat and walked over to her, already imagining what she must be thinking.
"Shanzay will be more than happy to hang out together; just give her a call." He left his palm rest atop her head for a moment, and Sania looked up at him, with eyes that were getting teary.
"Don't do that," Namjoon told her as he used his hands to cup her face and leaned down to look at her closely. "I promise she will continue paying even if she isn't in prison. I will make sure she will never be happy." He reassured her, and she pursed her lips and held her tears back, nodding her head in agreement.
The two shared a quick hug as he pulled her head onto his chest, then he walked away to continue with his day, leaving Sania behind feeling thankful that she had him, for god knows in what state she would have been if Namjoon hadn't been there to keep her from falling apart.
---To be continued---
It doesn't sound like a comedy now, but believe me, it's gonna get hilarious real soon. Trust the process. :D
