Chapter 10
The room was filled with shades as the light coming from the small lamp resting on the desk alongside the laptop screen, were the only thing still on.
It was keeping company to the secretary who had stayed behind on her desk, trying to get some more papers done and have everything on point by the day she was to leave this post.
Elle's hand felt numb as soon as she brought it to a halt, having finished writing the last paper for today. 100 handwritten pages, she numbered in her head and by the mention of it only she left an exhale of exhaustion escape her lips.
"Him and his peculiar preferences." She mumbled under her breath, speaking of Namjoon, who once a month requests of her to write certain passages he may have found around and favored.
He had provided to her multiple notebooks just for that purpose, which she kept stored in the library, divided into written and unwritten, a whole shelf was created just for that purpose. Notebooks that all looked the same on the outside yet contained so many different things, starting from poems, quotes, lyrics, or notes Namjoon had emailed to her in order to write them in those specific notebooks.
He used to refer to them as his collection and because it was dear to him, he wanted it handwritten, he had announced when she had first spoken to him about this absurdity. And of course, Elle had no other option but to do what he was asking of her. It was her job after all.
The thing however was that there were times she found this task the most annoying thing on earth and others that even though tired her to the bones -as today- she was left with a feeling of satisfaction that she finished it.
With a bit of pride, she looked over the last thing she had noted and then closed the notebook, pulling a new one from the shelf of her desk. She opened it and noted on the first page the exact time she started it and the date. Then she flipped a page and proceeded to write the last quote that was left on her laptop's screen.
As she looked at the device however she noticed that the screen had fallen asleep and even though her hand reflexively reached for the mouse, for some reason it stopped. She stared at it for a second then she glanced from left to right, feeling the nervousness that her sudden thought caused her.
If Namjoon was to ever notice, if he was ever to find out, he would surely get enraged, yet something inside her was strongly pushing her towards that idea. And so without her even resisting much, she took the initiative to write something that wasn't on the email Namjoon had to send her.
There were so many notebooks that he had, he would probably never read this and it was something beautiful, a version of something she had heard and had liked. Maybe if he was to have come across it, he would have liked it too. Enough to ask of her to note it in this notebook. So maybe she wasn't ruining his collection but just adding one more thing he would love.
"There was once a blue beautiful little fish, who one day went to the playground with his parents. There he met some new friends around his age. A squirrel, a snail, and a monkey became his closest friends and they would meet each afternoon to play together till one day, the father of the monkey asked the kids to try and climb the tree that was on the playground. The monkey did it so quickly, almost effortlessly and the squirrel followed showcasing his skills. Then the snail tried but failed and the little fish approached and gave it a try and also failed. In the beginning, the older ones just praise his friends and told him that he would be able to do better next time, if only he tried a bit more so each afternoon where the little fish saw his friend climbing on the tree, he kept trying and trying. Even the snail managed to reach the top, no matter how slow it was, yet he had not succeeded in climbing not even once. The little fish started feeling despair."
She wrote the first part, having in mind someone she used to know then she halted the tip of her pen, feeling slightly emotional over what she was going to write next.
"The little fish started being seen as someone incompetent by others and eventually by his own self. Why was it that no matter how hard he tried he just couldn't make it? Why was he not like his friends were? Why was he so different, so less than anyone else around him? He started feeling as his tries were futile and little by little, the little fish lost his smile, his happiness, his hopes. He gave up and decided to accept that he would never climb that tree. He was born a failure. He was born different. With such thoughts in his head, he ended up one afternoon somewhere far from the playground at a cliff near the sea and as he closed his eyes, he felt the hands of his negative thoughts pushing him off. The moment he hit the water, he had thought that everything was over for him yet when he opened his eyes, he realized that he could breathe underwater That he felt so much more alive in it. He started flipping his tail and he became so much faster than he ever was back on land. He could swim so well, so beautifully and freely. For the first time in his life, the moment he tried to end it all, he thankfully found something to make him feel alive. He realized that he was not incompetent nor born a failure, he was just not born to climb trees. He was born to swim. And he was the best at it."
Elle paused again, this time hesitating to make this personal but she had to. There's been so long she was longing to say this.
"So, please stop trying to climb trees. Even though you are succeeding at it. I wish you could tell, what is that truly makes you feel alive."
"Miss Elle." At the sound of her name, she jumped from her seat, in utter fear and as she saw Namjoon standing by the side of her desk, her breath halted on her throat painfully.
"Still here?" He questioned, ignoring the fact that he may have scared her as it seemed so yet Elle quickly collected herself and closed the notebook that was on her desk, replying casually that she was just going to take off.
"Since you are here, how about you bring me a cup of coffee before you go? Thank you." Namjoon uttered not giving her much space for arguing with his request, thing that was quite usual of him then he left towards his office, leaving behind his secretary who didn't dare glance towards his back, not even for a second.
---Change of set---
You were sitting in your living room, waiting for Jimin to arrive as he had told you that he would come by for dinner, yet the time was eleven and he was nowhere to be seen yet.
You had grown a bit worried truth was but after seeing his text that he had just gotten busy and was on his way to come to take you, you had calmed down and had gotten ready. While staying on your couch however you were feeling slightly uncomfortable for some reason but as Daniel got out of his room, you realized why you were having that feeling. It's been a long time since you were put into a situation to be left home alone with a stranger and that sure was more than expected to awaken some safety alarms inside you.
"Hey, Y/N." He greeted as soon as he saw you and you greeted back, while you wondered in your head where he had heard that he had permission to speak so informally to you. Not that you were a formality freak but it sure felt too sudden.
"Do you eat pasta? I will make dinner." Daniel smiled a bit as he basically invited you to eat with him, thing that you found kind of him to do.
"Unfortunately I can't cause I have planned an outing. Maybe I can taste your cooking skills some other time though." You politely replied and he didn't seem to mind your rejection as he stood there and just smiled at you before he let his eyes do a quick scan of your body.
"You look beautiful. I hope you have a good time with whoever it is that you are going out with." He said then walked towards the kitchen, leaving you a bit perplexed as even though nothing of the things he said sounded wrong, they for some reason left a vibe in the atmosphere that was a bit awkward. Thankfully though the doorbell echoed in the room and you quickly took off to answer the door.
"Hey baby, sorry I got so late. This day was full of unpredictable things." Jimin immediately apologized once you came to his sight then he proceeded to give your lips a peck and keep you in his embrace comfortably and warmly, until a sound of a plate breaking was heard, getting the attention of both of you.
"Someone's here?" He questioned as he pulled away and looked at you with a perplexed facial expression.
"Yeah, I will explain in a second." You told him as you patted his chest a bit then turned around and spoke. " Daniel, are you okay?"
"Oh yeah, don't mind me. Everything is okay. I will pay for the plate, I promise."He replied and Jimin's facial expression instantly grew stern and unfriendly.
He stepped inside and walked to the kitchen without a second of hesitation and once Daniel saw him, he got visibly scared and intimidated. He quickly bowed his head and greeted Jimin while he kept eyeing him with a gaze that if someone was to see, they could claim that it was the definition of ' if looks could kill'.
"Jimin, let's go. Have fun making your pasta Daniel. Eat well when it's done." You uttered with a smile while you grabbed Jimin's arm and pulled him away towards the exit, not wanting to make any scenes in front of a stranger.
"What is he doing here? I didn't approve of him to become your housemate."
"I didn't fully accept him to stay either. He will just stay for a month till he finds another place. He was in need and I couldn't just say no." You argued and he looked at you with a bothered expression, before he left an exhale escape from his lips.
"Just be careful around him, okay. He is not trustworthy yet and by the way, he is acting so far I don't see me trusting him anytime soon." Jimin admitted and you nodded in understanding as you didn't trust Daniel either. You had just accepted him to stay over for a month out of empathy.
"Anyway, this month that he will be here, make sure you lock your room every night, or even better, how about you come to sleep at my house." He suggested as his eyes suddenly lit up to the idea only.
"I will think about it." You replied and just grabbed his hand and pulled him to walk toward the elevator. Your behavior however saddened him a bit inside even though he didn't show it. Why was it that you would prefer being with anyone but him? Only The thought that you could be probably losing feelings for him, or he might have not gotten your full trust yet, pained him.
"Babe?" He called at you while you were in the elevator.
"Yes?"
"Shall we go somewhere that we haven't been in a while, tonight?" Jimin's lips got tugged upwards as he spoke, planning to make this night special for the both of you.
"Em sure, but where is that?" You questioned a bit curious about where he was thinking of taking you while you simultaneously wished that it wasn't anything fancy cause you weren't dressed appropriately for that and it would be best to be a place that wouldn't be too far too cause it was already late and you had to start work tomorrow.
Jimin let his arm get wrapped around your waistline and then brought you closer to his body making you look up at him with a heart that started to speed up. He gazed down at you without saying anything for a bit, thing that created a rather unbarring intention.
Then he wonders why I don't go to live with him! My heart may give up on me thirty times a day with his behavioral changes.
You thought to yourself as you gulped harshly, your eyes having traveled to his lips unconsciously.
A smirk appeared at Jimin's lips as he noticed where you were looking and then he proceeded to lean closer to your lips but despite your awaiting he just smiled once inches away from them and spoke, letting his breath come in contact with the skin of your lips, making them feel warm.
"It's a surprise."
