Chapter 1
Nya's POV
As soon as I smell the scent of bacon and gingerbread, I sit up in my bed. Looking out the window from from my small room, I see that the sun just recently rose. It's just peaking out from over the horizon. To my left, I see my mom already got out of bed, but I could tell that from the smell.
Slipping on my green and white stripped fuzzy socks, I walk out into the rest of our small apartment. In it, there is a couch, a small kitchen, a separate room for a bathroom, and a Christmas tree standing in the corner. It's sparsely decorated, a few ornaments here and there, with garland wrapping around it. A small tree topper, a star I made when I was seven, sits on top of it.
"Nya! I didn't expect you to be up so soon," my mom smiles at me, a spatula in her hand.
"You know I can never sleep in, let alone on Christmas morning," I take a piece of the bacon that's already done. I sit down at the small table we have in the corner. It's a fold up table, and it's very fragile. If too much weight is put on it, it collapses.
"I expected later than 6:10. You're lucky I'm an early bird," she smiles at me. She wipes her hands on her apron. "Did you see that Santa brought you a present?"
"Mom, I said I didn't want anything. You letting me pursue my dream of acting is more than enough. Besides, I'm 13 now. I don't need anything," I tell her. She shrugs.
"I'm not letting my only child go presentless on Christmas. What type of mother would that make me?" she points at me with the spatula.
"I'm not going to go presentless. Gabe invited me over to his house tomorrow for late Christmas. He's getting me presents there," I explain to her.
Gabe is my boyfriend of about a month. We met on the set of his Disney Channel show. I played a student at the science fair with a total of one line, but somehow, we still ended up talking. Although he just turned 16, he seems to have a genuine interest in me.
"I still want to meet him, you know. I don't like it that you're with a boy so much older that I haven't met," my mom informs me.
"He's fine, mom. He's the one who got me the audition for the show I was doing stuff for a couple weeks ago, the show I got the callbacks for," I defend his merit.
"That's the one about the ninja, right?"
"Yeah. I'm auditioning for the little sister of one of them. They have a loose idea of what's going to happen, and they're going to solidify it once they cast the actors," I elaborate.
"It's great that he did that for you, but I still want to meet him. Some of the people in the industry can be nasty. I just want to make sure my girl is protected," she smiles softly at me, her long, black hair falling down over her shoulders.
"Like my father?"
"Like your father," she agrees. She places the rest of the bacon on the plate and wipes the excess grease on her apron. "You should open your present now, and then we can watch Christmas movies together."
"Did you get the day off of work?" I ask, hopefully. She nods, and I let out a yelp of happiness, clapping my hands.
"They nearly didn't. The car washers wanted me to come in, but I convinced them that not many people would be going to a car washer on Christmas," she tells me. She takes off her apron. As I walk over and sit down on the ground in front of the tree, she sits down on our couch.
I pick up box. It's relatively small, wrapped in shiny red paper. When I shake the box, I feel a shift in the box. I slowly unwrap the present, and when I do, my eyes widen. "My own phone! Mom, you didn't have to."
"With all of the casting calls you're going to be getting, your phone is going to be blowing up. Besides, you're going into high school soon. You'll need one then," she tells me.
I jump up, wrapping my arms around her and trapping her in a hug. "Thank you!"
"It's nothing. Now come on, let's watch a movie."
---
"Rudolph or Elf?" my mom asks after we've finished the third Christmas movie. I stroke my chin.
"Rudolph. I feel like I haven't seen it in years," taking the disc, I put it in the player. The movie starts, the typical intro playing. However, it's interrupted when my mom's phone rings. She pauses the movie before pulling her phone up to her ear.
"Yes, this is her...oh really? That's wonderful news!...I'll tell her...now? Alright, thank you so much!" when she puts down the phone, a beaming smile is on her face.
"What is it?"
"You know the ninja show? You got the part!" she tells me, clapping her hands. My eyes widen, and I start jumping up and down.
"Really? That's great, wow, wow," I start freaking out. While the show, and the producers, aren't majorly known, this is still my first reoccurring role in anything.
"They want us to head down to the studio and sign some paperwork," my mom explains.
"I'll get ready, then."
---
Wearing a pair of jeans and the nicest sky blue blouse I own, I step out of my mother's well used car. With the help of my maintenance, considering I've always had an interest in autobody work, this car has taken us over 100,000 miles over the past several years. It's worn down, a dull color with the paint chipping, but it's comforting.
When we park it, it looks so out of place next to the other cars. None are nearly as worn down or used. Many of them are shiny and appear freshly washed. Ours hasn't been washed in a long time.
There's a decently long walk, about four minutes, from where we parked to the building. We walk in through a revolving door, something I've never experienced. I attempt to hide my awe as we approach a receptionist.
"Hello, Mr. Chambers requested us," my mom informs her. The woman, her dark hair tied back in a bun, looks up from her computer screen.
"Ah, part of the Ninjago group. He's the third door to the right on the second floor," she instructs us before going back to the computer screen. Instead of waiting for the elevator, my mom and I walk up the stairs, passing a little Christmas tree as we do. When we make it up, we follow her instructions and open the door labeled with his name.
When we open the door, I'm surprised by the amount of people in the room. I expected it to be private meetings between each individual actor and Gabe's uncle, the producer, not a giant group. Several people are sitting at the long table.
At the far end of the table, closest to Mr. Chambers, a boy with shaggy black hair, appearing several years older than me, sits with a man who I assume is his dad. His eyebrows are thick, and he is fairly muscular. He's conversing quietly with the man next to him.
In the next section of people, there is a boy with both of his parents. His hair is styled in a platinum blonde crew cut, neat all of the way around. He appears very neat and put together, having nice posture and a polite expression on his face.
Across the table from them is a boy looking about a year or so older than me. He has auburn hair and eyes that are purely blue, no hint of grey or green anywhere. He's turned away from the table, talking to a man that looks about 23 that's wearing a suit and an earpiece.
"Have my mom and dad called you back yet?" the boy asks the man who clearly, both through age and the words that were just asked, isn't his dad. The man sticks up a hand, silencing the boy, who sighs and slumps down in his chair.
"Mrs. and Ms. Taylor, it's a pleasure that you could join us on such a short notice. You two can take a seat next to mister Gordon while we wait for our final ninja to arrive," Mr. Chambers looks up from some papers, gesturing to the seats next to the boy with the auburn hair. The two of us walk over, myself taking the seat closer to him.
"Ooo, someone new. Hi, I'm Jay," the boy sticks his hand out, a friendly smile on his face. I take his hand, shaking it.
"I'm Nya," I introduce myself.
"I like your shirt. It's my favorite color. Granted, dark blue is superior to sky blue, but it's blue nonetheless," he says, and I notice he's also wearing a blue shirt.
"And why is that?"
"Because it is," he shrugs. "It's more vibrant. Ooo you know what's a vibrant color that's not superior? Neon orange. It has its purpose of being so loud that no one misses it, but people who wear it as a fashion statement confuse me. Sometimes they just look like traffic cones."
I let out a small laugh at the comparison. "Neon orange is also good for highlighters."
"True, it's what neon colors are truly meant for," Jay agrees. This boy is overflowing with energy. "What'd you do for Christmas? I already asked those two," he gestures between the two boys across from us.
"I woke up, opened up a present, had some bacon, and watched Christmas movies," Ianswer.
"Ooo, fun, fun. What type of bacon?"
"I don't know, the kind that comes from a pig?"
That makes Jay laugh. "Good answer."
"What've you done today?" the question causes his face to slightly falter.
"Nothing much. I had some cereal, opened up a couple of presents, and I tried to convince Walter here to do something festive but as always, he refused," he says that looking at the man behind him, who rolls his eyes.
"My job is to make sure you don't break anything while Mr. and Mrs. Gordon are off, not to entertain you," he tells Jay, blandly.
"Your parents aren't here for Christmas?" I ask him, sympathy hitting my core. When my mom had to work on Christmas, I remember how terrible it was. It was so lonely.
"Haven't been since I was seven. Each year it's something new. This year, my mom has modeling on the other side of the country, and my dad is off in the desert recording a new movie. They promise that they'll be back every year, and yet... I'm sorry, that's not your problem. Anyways, I was especially happy to get the casting call because it meant that I could get out of the house," he explains, having a cheerier demeanor after he pauses.
"I understand how bad Christmas can be when you're alone. I've experienced it, and it's okay to be upset about it." I let him know that it's okay to talk about it.
He gives me a small smile. "It sucks, but I know I could have it much worse. It just gets so bottled up because I'm home schooled and have no one to talk to. Do you go to public school? As it as cool as in the movies? Are the principals actually tyrants?" He excitedly starts to ask questions once he realizes that I go to actual school, causing me to laugh a bit. His energy and excitement is admirable, considering most of my friends are rather pessimistic. It's like a little breath of fresh air.
"I do go to public school. No, it's boring. Sometimes, but mine haven't been," I answer honestly. He nods, possibly to himself.
"I..." he gets cut off by the door opening. A boy, looking one or two years older than me, walks in with someone that looks like his dad behind him. His hair is brown and is intricately styled.
"Take a seat. Now that everyone is here, we can start the meeting," Mr. Chambers says, halting all of the conversation in the room. "As you all know, you've all received prominent roles in my newest tv show, Ninjago. However, I'm taking a different route on how I'm creating the characters. Instead of looking for actors to fill prewritten parts, we looked for good actors that we could pull inspiration from and could ideally be playing themselves in a fictional universe. Your characters will be keeping your names, interests, personalities, etc to create a more interesting experience in the writers room and to force them to think outside of the box because they can't really fall back in the basic tropes," he explains. Walking around the table, he hands each of us our contracts. "If you sign this contract, you'll be signing into the show for the pilots, and if the pilots get picked up, 2 more seasons after. If we wish to make the show past season 2, we'll negotiate then. The show is going to be rated tv 14 for violence. Additionally, you all will be required to do your own stunts. Granted, you will be trained to do them, but it will take significant work to build up the strength needed for most of them. I'll give you all time to read. If you have any questions, don't hesitate to ask."
As everyone, specifically our parents, read the contracts, I look around. I'm going to be with these 4 boys in this room for 2 seasons, and all I can hope is that I get along with them all.
After a while, (with the exception of Jay because his guardians aren't here to verify it) we all sign our contracts as well as our parents. After Mr. Chambers gives us the information for when we need to come back in, he dismisses all of us.
"Mister Gordon, it's time to go," Walter tells him, making Jay groan.
"It's so boring at home."
"You should come with my mom and I. We decided that we were going to go ice skating before we picked up some dinner," I offer, taking Jay away from Walter's stare.
"I don't see a problem with that. The more, the merrier," my mom says, just like I was hoping for her to do.
"Can I, Walter? Please?" Jay's eyes light up.
Walter sighs. "Anything to get you out of my hair for a couple of hours."
And after that day, I knew I had found one of my best friends.
---
*present day*
Lloyd, Kai, Cole, and I walk out amidst the people coming away from the manifestation gate. As the warehouse door opens, we look around, the people dispersing in front of us.
"Where are we?" Lloyd looks around at our surroundings. We're clearly not in Prime Empire.
"What happened here?" Cole follows up.
"We're home. We're in Ninjago," I look around, excitement coming through my voice.
"But how?"
In the distance, I see Jay, Wu, Pix, and Wu walking towards us.
"Jay!" I start to run towards him, and he does the same. Once I'm within reach, he picks me up, spinning me in circles, before placing me down and pressing his lips against mine. Closing my eyes, I grab his shoulders and pull myself closer. When we break apart, Lloyd comes over and gives the two of us a hug.
"Master Wu! Zane! Pix!"
"What happened? Did we get the keytana? Did we win?" Kai asks, eagerly.
"It's a long story," Jay brushes off the question. Out of the corner of my eye, I watch Lloyd give Racer 7 a quick nod.
"Where's Unagami?" Cole questions.
Jay gets a content smile on his face. "Where he belongs. He's home."
"And that's a wrap on Prime Empire!" Mr. Chambers announces from behind the camera. Everyone behind the camera starts to clap, and those of us in the view of the camera smile.
Once the claps die down, Jay steps forward. We have a tradition of the focus ninja for the season being the one to give the going away speech. "Thank you everyone! This season couldn't have been possible without you all. The creative team really pushed themselves this season, whether with the entire concept of Prime Empire itself, the costumes, the setting, all of it. I have no doubt that it'll turn out great. It's been a pleasure working with everyone again this season, and I can't wait for the next season. You all are the best team ever, and without you guys, Ninjago would not be the sensation it is today." A roar of cheers follows his speech. After the cheers, everyone disperses. The crew pats each other on the back as the six of us ninja stand in the center of the set.
"Nya, it's your turn to hold the last day of shooting party. I held it last time," my show brother informs me. The six of us always have a little get together on the first and last day of shooting for every season.
"I'm not allowed to do those anymore, remember? Gabe says that it looks bad for him to be letting his girlfriend spend the night with five guys," I remind them.
"He's such a crybaby," Kai rolls his eyes. He has one arm wrapped around Lloyd's shoulder and the other around Zane's. "If there's five people there period. Nothing is gonna happen."
"I'm not the one who needs convincing," I sigh.
"I can host it if Nya can't. She can wear earbuds and call in, so it's still like she's there at least a little bit," Jay offers, giving me a sympathetic smile.
"Are your parents in town? Won't you need to check with them?" Cole brings up.
"When are they ever? I'll just tell Walter and pull some sleeping bags into the living room. We can order pizza or something, ooo or maybe I can pick up some sushi somewhere. Do you guys want sushi?"
I sigh on the inside. Not only do I want to hang out with the guys, but I've also been craving sushi.
"Sounds good to me," Lloyd says, and everyone else agrees.
"Then it's settled. My place, 6 o'clock, lots and lots of sushi. Let's talk about theories for the next season because boy, do I have lots."
A/N Welcome to Unscripted! This was supposed to be posted on Christmas, but of course I'm late.
Here are some disclaimers before I go forward.
1: The ninja have different last names from their show counterparts, but the same first names to avoid confusion. They also have the same personalities as to not make them not like themselves.
2: Kai and Nya ARE NOT SIBLINGS. They play siblings, but they're not related.
3: The people who play the ninja's parents in the show are the actors parents, with a few exceptions (Chen isn't Skylor's dad, etc)
4: This Ninjago is tv-14 (as mentioned), not tv y-7. I might write on one or two scenes that aren't in the actual tv show that are going to be canon in this tv universe.
5: Every chapter will start with a flashback (just like in Long Time No See by MasterofCupcakes), so when you see italics, know it's a flashback.
Any hopes for this book?
I hope you guys enjoy! The chapter 2 will be posted either once I'm done with Unanimity or when I'm fairly close to being done.
