Chapter 1

A/N: I know! I'm sorry!

*hides behind pile of books from all the comments*

I know I've been totally AWOL for the past, oh maybe five-ish months. I feel so bad for leaving you all hanging, but... Well I had my crazy trip out of the country and school and... the point is I've been busy. And this is me apologizing profusely for leaving you all hanging.

Unfortunately, I have not had the time to write a good chapter for Making the Match, so I'll have to leave you guys still hanging there. Buttttttt Lodestar is coming out super soon and I wanted to write a quick one shot!

Admittedly, I shipped Sophie and Keefe when I first read the books, but then it became a tie between Keefe and Fitz. So here's a short story for all my Team Keefe readers!

Oh yeah and I drew Sophie above, so there's that.

Anyways, here's the story! Missed you guys so much!

The figure bent his head and reached for the hood, slowly lifting the dark material over his head. A mop of dirty blond hair was revealed was revealed followed by a pair of ice blue eyes as the figure looked up.

Sophie gasped, her telekinesis flickering until a clatter of weapons echoed around the cave. Those blue eyes... she recognized those blue eyes.

"Keefe," she whispered, her voice trembling with hurt. "How could you?!"

The mischievous sparkle that had always been present in his eyes was now dull, his hair almost a light brown with the dirt covering it. The smirk constantly on his face had turned to a sneer, which morphed into an apologetic smile when he met Sophie's eyes.

"Good to see you too, Foster," he patronized.

Sophie gritted her teeth to prevent herself from screaming. "Why are you doing this?" she choked out. "What did we ever do to you? We were your friends, Keefe. We cared for you." Her voice cracked. "I cared for you."

"Oh really?" Keefe's voice was flat, not betraying the slightest bit of emotion. "Because it sure didn't seem like it." He took a deep breath. "Besides, that's not what I came here for."

Sophie raised an eyebrow.

"I know you think I betrayed you," he began slowly, as if explaining to a child. "But what I did was right. The Black Swan led us around with riddles and clues, never revealing their real objectives. They were losing lives by the minute. But the Neverseen... they actually value every member."

"No they don't!" Fitz screamed out from the force field and Keefe whipped towards him.

"SHUT UP!" he growled, glaring at Fitz. "You don't understand! Being Mr. Perfect all the time, getting exactly what you want. Everything works out for you, Fitz."

Fitz flinched.

Keefe's icy tone escalated until it became a raging fire. "I loved her!" he screamed, tears streaming down his cheeks. "Do you know how many times she rejected me?" he demanded. "Every time... for you!"

Fitz glanced at Sophie. "Who the hell are you talking about?"

Keefe let out a cruel laugh. "Oh you know exactly who I'm talking about."

Fitz's eyes widened. "You can't possibly think... I had absolutely nothing to do with... Keefe, that's out of my hands!"

Sophie's wide eyes flitted back and forth between the previously best friends. Suddenly, an arm yanked her into a cramped corridor. Sophie whipped around to face none other than Keefe Sencen.

"What the-?" Sophie glanced back at the hooded figure who had revealed himself to be Keefe and the Keefe in front of her. "Why are there...?"

Keefe placed a finger over his lips and tucked a strand of hair behind Sophie's ear, smiling at her. "You don't know how good it feels to see you. I've missed you all so much."

Sophie shook her head. "So you're the real one?" she tried.

"Yeah," Keefe nodded. "They used some elixirs to make one of the other guys, who can mimic, look like me." He raised an eyebrow. "You don't really think I would say something like that to you and Fitz, do you?"

"I didn't," Sophie agreed, her voice rising. "But I also didn't think you'd just go and join the Neverseen, so how's that for surprises?"

Keefe sighed. "Look, we can talk about this later. But I need you to transmit to Fitz and Tam. I have a map of these headquarters in my mind right now and there's an easy exit, but they need to get out fast. I can't let them get hurt."

"You already have."

"Please, Sophie," Keefe pleaded. "If they get hurt, I'll never forgive myself."

Sophie rolled her eyes but obliged, reaching out for Keefe's temples. She closed her eyes, ignoring her racing heart, and looked for the memory he was mentioning.

The clarity of his photographic memories never failed to amaze her, as Fitz had told her multiple times about herself. The memory was at the forefront of his mind and Sophie used the image to transmit directions to Fitz.

Fitz, that isn't actually Keefe. He's here with me and he has the directions to get you and Tam out.

Say what now?!

It's another Neverseen member in disguise... he's going to hurt you... you guys have to run!

Sophie, calm down. Just send me the instructions and I'll handle the rest. How are you going to get out?

Sophie glanced at Keefe who was giving her an obviously concerned look. He wouldn't hurt her... would he?

I've got it, don't worry.

With that, she severed the connection between them, hoping Fitz and Tam were able to get out safely. Crossing her arms, she turned back to Keefe.

"You told them?" he asked, eyes clouded with worry.

Sophie nodded.

Keefe let out a sigh of relief. "Thank you. I promise, it wasn't a trap. But they were about to fall into one with the other guy acting like me." He frowned. "Speaking of promises, you don't really seem to have kept yours."

"Excuse me?" Sophie asked, shocked. "I've kept every promise I ever made."

"You hate me."

"No I don't!"

"You don't trust me. You wish you'd never befriended the rogue Keefe Sencen."

"Keefe, that's not true!"

They argued back and forth, their voices rising and faces leaning closer. It wasn't until Sophie paused from yelling did she realize how close they were standing.

Finally, Keefe closed his eyes and took a deep breath, his voice coming out as barely a whisper. "I'm sorry."

Sophie raised an eyebrow.

"I just can't believe everything's gotten this crazy," he admitted, voice low. "I'm here in the Neverseen, you guys are in the Black Swan, we're fighting each other in this war. I've never felt more alone before, but I've also never felt less alone. Sometimes I just lie down and close my eyes, wishing everything went back to the way it was when we were all together. And as much as it's hard to believe, Foster, I miss you to pieces."

Keefe took her hands in his and Sophie shivered, but it had nothing to do with the wind howling through the cave.

"I know it'll be hard to forgive me," he continued. "But after this war is over, can you try? It's asking a lot, but-"

Sophie cut him off, pressing her lips against his. Maybe it was their proximity or her missing him so much or Keefe's confession, but in that moment, it just felt right.

And right it was.

When they broke apart, red faced and breathing heavily, Keefe had a wide smile on his face.

"You're good at a lot of things, Foster," he began, grinning. "But your kissing needs work." Keefe winked. "Of course, I'm always here if you'd like to practice."

"I... Shut up," Sophie managed, shaking slightly. But the small smile made its way through onto her face anyway.

"Well," Keefe draped an arm around her shoulders. "I told you you'd fall for me some day."

Sophie forced a frown, shrugging off Keefe's arm. "Keefe, I swear..."

"What'll you do?" Keefe teased. "Kiss me again to stop me from talking?"

"Keefe," she warned. "Just tell me how to get out of here."

"Only if the Mysterious Miss F grants me another kiss."

Shaking her head, Sophie obliged. Yet when she ran down the corridor with the directions Keefe had given her, she couldn't help but smile.

I'll come back for you Keefe. I promise.

A/N: Okay guys, so Lodestar is out! I can't believe it! I've almost finished it, and it's sooo good. Hope you all enjoyed it as much as I did. Also, I did mention that my friend and I dressed up as Sophie and Biana (me as Biana) for Halloween, so here's a picture!

Thanks for reading and see you all later! ~PJOfanatix
