Close (Ch. 2)
The next morning I hop into the shower. After drying off, I pull on a tight purple top and a way too short white mini skirt. As I wait for the heat rollers to curl my hair into bouncy waves, I read the mysterious blackmail message over. The students on the removal list seemed to have no relation each other, but I suppose that the blackmailer did that on purpose. Which also meant I had a suspect list of seven and all of their friends. After slipping into my heels and winging my eyeliner, I leave my apartment. I feel a tap on my shoulder while I'm walking up the million stairs that lead up to the school. "Hey new girl," says the voice. I spin around to see Mallory Gordon, one the girls who was on the list that was texted me last night. Is she the blackmailer?? "Hello," I say. "I didn't see you yesterday, but my friends told me about you. Wanna sit with me today at lunch?" she says, eagerly. Anything could be better than another lunch in the bathroom. "I'd love too!" I exclaim. "Yay!!" she says back, as if Taylor Swift had just agreed to become her bestie. I plaster a smile onto my face until she runs back to her friends. She's not the blackmailer, well my 'spidey senses' told me so anyway. My morning classes go exactly like yesterday's, except an excited Mallory waving to me at every turn. At lunch, Mallory frantically waves to me from her table. I carry my tray to the long people-filled table. Immediately, I recognise everyone at her table. Alison Price, Mackenzie Johnson, Beth Coleman, and Abigail Nguyen. None of the girls other than Mallory were on the removal list, but all of them were on my 'take down' list. Mallory introduced me to them and I pretended that I didn't already know their names. I even as far to call Beth, Britney a few times. They seemed nice, but you can never be too suspicious. Following lunch, I notice that there is at least one of Mallory's friends in each of my classes. Alison and Makenzie were actually quite friendly, but Abigail seemed shy. I think I might have gone overboard with the Britney thing, because Beth would smile at me, but she avoided conversation.
I meet Jesse and Captain Hancock at the precinct after school. "What's the problem?" says Captain Hancock incredulously. We both thrust our phone at Hancock. °He opens our phone and immediately finds the group chat. "Did you give ANYONE your phone numbers?" Hancock says, almost yelling. His raised voice draws attention from a few officers. "No one," I say. "And you?" says Hancock a little quieter than the last time. Jesse takes a moment to think and shakes his head. "No," he says eventually. "Then why the HELL ARE YOU GETTING THESE TEXT MESSAGES?" yells Captain Hancock. I stand there speechless. I think I can speak for both of us when I say we were terrified of Hancock.°
"My office, now!" he says. Shit just got real. Both of us follow Hancock reluctantly. He yelled at us for a good ten minutes. He calms himself for minute, before yelling at John Canada (from IT) to get his, and I quote, "butt up here." Mr. Canada runs faster than I've ever seen a 5'0, 260 pound man run. "Yes, sir?" says the out of breath man. "Come in. And shut the door," says Hancock, almost commanding-like. Jesse and I pass our phones to the chunky IT guy. He sits down and hunches over, with his compete and undivided attention towards tracking the blackmailer. After freakishly fast typing, he looks up. "It's definitely a burner phone. A cheap phone that could be from Walmart or some random gas station. There's no way to track it's owner," he says. Captain looks like he's about to explode. "I need the two of you to spend a few hours brainstorming over who could be sending these," he says. "Can we have an interrogation room or an office or something?" Jesse questions. "No. Figure something out. Sit in your squad car in the Walmart parking lot for all I care, but I don't want to see you faces until you have a suspect," says Captain angrily. "Yes, sir. Will do," says Jesse. I nod and exit Hancock office. Back in the hallway, I ask Jesse, "Where do you want to brainstorm?" "I have a feeling it'll take a while. Wanna grab coffee?" he replies. "Sounds great," I respond. I follow him to the parking lot where we get into my car. Obviously when we're undercover we don't drive squad, and going anywhere other than to school we have to take regular cars. You can't be too careful. °We sit in a local coffee shop, and brainstorm.
"So, who is the first person who comes to mind when I say, 'blackmail'?" he asks me. "No one," I say despondently. "Okay, how about 'evil'?" he asks me. "Uhhh, my mother, but that won't help us," I say laughing. Obviously confused, Jesse asks why. And that's how we got distracted the first time.
After sharing all of our family drama to each other, we get back on track. Still not one suspect, or perhaps not one suspect has been removed from the list that included the whole town has come across our minds, yet. Eventually, the barista politely tells us that the shop is closing soon. "So, we didn't accomplish anything. Do you want to go back to my place? It's only 9," he asks. I think for a moment, I know I shouldn't, because it's inappropriate, but if we don't figure this out soon, we never will. "Sure," I reply.°
His apartment isn't far from the coffee shop. "Oh, I share an apartment with my little brother. Just ignore him," Jesse tells me. He unlocks his door and finds a pair of pants by the entry way. He quickly kicks them aside. "Uh, ignore the mess. My brother isn't the cleanest person." A tall man who actually looks quite similar to Jesse enters the room. "Who's the girl?" says the man. "This is my undercover partner Lily, Lily this is my brother Max," he says. "Hi," I say. "Oh and Max, for god's sake put on some pants," Jesse adds. Max rolls his eyes and walks in to what I assume is his room. "Like I said, ignore him," jokingly says Jesse. We sit on his couch and talk about the case. Like at the coffee shop, we get distracted.
Before I knew it, I hear someone say, "I knew you were more than friends!" My eyes flutter open. I look over and Jesse has his arm around my waist. We lay together on the couch. I immediately stand up. "I fell asleep."
"You fell asleep...and so did I," says Jesse. "What time is it?" I ask, panicked. "7:30." says Max. "Ugh.....School starts at 8:30," I say. "Shit," Jesse mutters under his breath. "You won't make it back to you apartment in time," Jesse points out. And I won't. "So either I skip, and get ready or I wear this to school," I say. "Wait! I've got this," Max says. He dashed out of the living room. I look at Jesse. He shrugs. Max comes back with a dress. "Why do you have a dress?" asks Jesse. "So, every time I have a girl over, she needs a new outfit, so I give her one and she leaves her last outfit. Then, I give the next girl the outfit. And so on," he says. "Man-whore," mutters Jesse. "I'll take it," I never liked this skirt anyway. I grab the navy and pink dress. I walk into the bathroom. The dress fits me well. I walk out and hand Max my crop top and shirt. "Thank you," I say to Max. "We better catch the bus," says Jesse, who must have changed while I was in the bathroom. Luckily, we took my squad car, so I had my school books and my purse. I applied my make-up on the bus from whatever I found in my purse. That was close.
IF YOU WANT TO READ SOMETHING BY THE BLACKMAILER'S POINT OF VEIW SCROLL TO THE BOTTOM!!
-----------------------------------------------------------
Hey! I kind of want to put opposite points of view for characters whom are "main characters," so I'll put little °s (at the beginning to the end of the scene) and then, put the views down past the dotted line. I'll be putting a new "vocabulary" words in each chapter. So, definitions:
incredulous(ly)- disbelief
despondent(ly)- losing confidence/hope
mediocre- average

#1°: Officer Kate Flynn
I'm typing up my report, on the drug scam I busted proudly a few weeks ago. I hear Captain Hancock talking to the two newbies. Not paying much attention to their conversation, I hear Hancock raising his voice. I wonder what they did. I think they were on some undercover mission. Both of them are denying whatever he was yelling about, then I hear, "WHY THE HELL ARE YOU GETTING THESE TEXT MESSAGES, THEN?" I chuckle to myself. I told him not to send them on anything too important. But, who listens to their girlfriends? We have a coffee date tonight, and I'm sure I'll hear every detail of their mess-up. Luckily, I don't mind a little work place drama.
#2°: Alex Mayfield
A squad car pulls up to the front of the coffee shop I work at. Thank god. I took them long enough. The officers walk in. They walk up to counter. "I'll take a pumpkin spice latte," says the girl. Of course. Why would they care about a coffee shop robbery? I make their coffee and serve it to them. "I don't mean to interrupt, but this coffee shop was robbed last week, some officers were supposed to come down. Do you happen to know when? Or could you help me out?" I ask. The man smiles, then looks at the girl. "We'll have to talk to one of the uniforms," she says. Uniforms? What? The man looks up. "It's not our jurisdiction, um, lower ranked officers deal with, uh, robberies." he said to me. "Oh of course," I say. Lower ranked? He acted like robberies were so mediocre. Now I was curious about what could be so much more interesting than an armed robbery. I wiped up the tables around them. They were talking about a blackmailed. You'd think that an armed robbery was more important. Then, I heard something about being undercover. I knew I shouldn't be listening anymore. It was five minutes until closing. I walked over to the table and saw a notebook filled with names. I looked up and politely asked them to leave. They did, but I couldn't help remembering the list. My niece's name was on that list. It couldn't be good.
BLACKMAILER'S POV:
I sit on the bus. Soon, all suspicions are confirmed. A different squad car was parked outside of Jesse's apartment. A girl, who didn't normally ride the bus, Lily sat next to him. They were definitely both cops. I chuckle to my self and compose my next text.
