Chapter 22

I grabbed a bit of all the food laid out in front of me and had to resist the strong urge to stuff everything in mouth all at once. It was all so tempting but no, I really couldn't.

So instead, I ate it all very slowly, savouring all its taste to the very end.

I finished the meal by popping one last green grape into my mouth. My teeth sunk into the juicy flesh of the grape, tearing the skin as it's sweet juice burst into my mouth.

So delicious.

I swallowed the last of the juice forcefully down my throat, and washed it all down with a huge swallow of the lemonade. I dabbed my mouth with a white napkin that Gray had brought. My throat felt oddly dry, so I took another swig from the plastic bottle to quench my thirst.

I am stuffed.

I feel like a stuffed turkey on Thanksgiving Day.

"Hey, Willow?"

My head immediately perked up at the sound of my name.

"Yea?"

"Come over here."

I turned to look directly into the striking grey eyes of Gray. He patted the soft grass beside him, indicating that he wanted me to sit next to him. He was leaning against the trunk of the weeping willow tree.

Too lazy to actually get up and walk, I just crawled towards him, and snuggled up next to him. I leaned my head on his chest and just sat there, perfectly comfortable. The last streaks of sunlight were already fading out, and we were soon left under the tree in the night.

The bright night.

"Do you want to go and see the stars?" Gray asked, sounding as if he was asking a little kid.

I shrugged in reply. "Whatever works."

He got up first, and grabbed my right hand to help me up. He pulled me towards him and his arm snaked around my waist. He pulled me in and walked me towards the open sky, pushing the dangling leaves of the willow aside to let us through.

We went out into the open night sky and lay down on the soft grass, my head on his chest. I was snuggled up to him once again, and we were both staring at the dark, starry sky. It was the night of the full moon, and I've never seen the sky full of so many stars before.

The city is just too bright to see the stars. But in the countryside? It's perfect. It's breath taking as well.

And that was exactly what we did for a whole thirty minutes; just lying there, staring into the night sky, which somehow soothes my heart.

"There's something I want to do," I heard Gray mutter.

I looked at him, curiosity and amusement twinkled in my eyes. "What is it?"

"Come here, I'll show you."

For the second time that evening, he pulled me up and led me, this time, back towards the middle of the willow tree. He went straight towards the trunk of the tree itself. I cocked my head and watched him curiously as he produced a pocketknife out of his pocket. He flipped it open and turned his back towards me.

"What are you doing?"

"If you want, you can come here and see for yourself."

Curiosity easily got the better of me, so I went to see. I grinned goofily at what he was doing.

He was carving our names on the tree bark, with a huge heart around both of it.

"Oh my goodness Gray! That carving our names thing is so overused!" I squealed.

He chuckled. "Who cares? I definitely don't."

He stepped back to admire his work. "Now, it will be here forever. And we will remember this day every time we come back."

I nodded my head in agreement. "Yea..."

He came to stand beside me. "We should come back here again one day..."

"Yeah. Definitely. We really, really should do that."

And we just stood there, staring at our carved names on the bark, lit by the soft moonlight, in silence.

"I really don't want this night to end," I commented, breaking the not awkward silence between us.

"Neither do I. But all good things must come to an end..."

I sighed. "I know..."

"But before this one ends, I have one last surprise for you."

He went back to the picnic basket and bent down to get something. Then, he walked back towards me. It was a cupcake with a single candle on the top. My lips slowly curved up into a smile.

He took out a lighter from his pocket and lit the candle. He held it out on the palm of his hand, silently telling me to take the cake from his hand. So I did, I took it.

Then, he started singing the birthday song to me, very softly and full of patience.

"Happy birthday to you.

Happy birthday to you.

Happy birthday to Willow.

Happy birthday to you."

I took a deep breath and blew the candle out. And before I could do anything else, he kissed me. Not a long one. Just a peck. That both felt like it lasted forever and less than a few seconds. It may be short, yes, but it was full of emotion and passion.

I felt so happy, it's indescribable. I just wish I could experience this over and over and over again every single day. It's the best thing anyone has ever given me before.

"Thank you so much," I whispered.

But he shook his head. "One last gift. From me to you."

He put his hand into his pocket and took out a small box. A small and long box, with a ribbon on the top. What is that?

He handed it to me. "I hope you'll like this. Go ahead and open it," he urged.

I opened the box and gasped when I saw what he had bought me. He had bought not only one, but two things for me. A necklace and a charm bracelet.

There were two charms on the necklace. The first one was the outline of a heart, that was made of silver. Wow. Silver? Silver's so expensive... I... Wow. The second one's a butterfly that's embedded with diamonds. Probably not real diamonds, but this must be really expensive.

The charm bracelet had only one charm to it. A cupcake, with the number seventeen engraved on it on the back of the charm. It's so sweet of him. These two gifts must have cost him a fortune.

"Oh, Gray... These are beautiful but they're so expensive..." I told him quietly.

"It's okay. Don't worry about the price," he replied.

"But..."

"Shh... Just accept it. Don't worry..."

"Okay. Thanks."

He smiled. "You're welcome."

"Will you help me wear it?" I asked him, holding up the necklace to him.

"Sure."

He took the necklace and went behind me. He put the unhooked necklace in front of me and brought it to the back, and hooked it back again. Then, he took the bracelet from the box and slipped it onto my wrist.

"I'll add more charms to it each time something memorable happened to us."

"You don't have to."

"But I want to," he replied softly and patiently almost immediately.

I really love the gifts, thank you so much Gray.

"You know, I don't want to spoil the time, but we really should go now, or we won't wake up early enough tomorrow to make it to school on time," he commented on the time.

"Yup. We probably should. I don't want to be late for school."

He chuckled. "Okay, let me go and grab the things first."

He swiftly gathered all the things that were scattered on the ground and dumped them into the picnic basket. Then, he walked over to me and held my hand and out fingers interlaced. We went to the car and slipped in.

We pretty much drove home in silence.

I know that for a fact that this outing will be one that I will never forget, not for a long time to come anyway. I really love it. It really is a magical time for me. I could feel my heart leap for joy. I felt calm, and at peace, and happy, happier than I have felt in a while.

This evening was one of the best I've had in a very long while already. It really made me so happy; it made me feel so special. It made me feel like I am actually loved in this world. It made me feel like someone actually cares for me, and that I am not truly alone.

It made me feel like crying for joy. It really made me feel so blissful, so happy, so... At peace.

There is only one word available in the English Oxford dictionary – as well as my vocab – to describe this picnic. To describe this outing. To describe this evening. To describe my birthday. And that is:

Perfect.
