Play Nice
Stevie slammed her way through her dressing room door backstage. Tambourine flying, shawl thrown off, hair more disheveled than usual. Tusk had been so difficult for everyone. A curly haired guitarist with a flick of rage in his eyes comes following right behind her, then comes Christine, John and Mick.
"Get the fuck away from me, Buckingham! I'm done, just leave me in peace"
"Peace?! You want peace?! Excuse me but you were the one who started this before the show. You're acting like a child!"
"Me?! I didn't start a damn thing. Now if you don't mind I--" she sits down at the vanity, taking her hair down from the Gibson girl style she was wearing and removed her lipstick to reapply it.
Lindsey interrupted her, turning her around to face him and she had a look in her eyes he hadn't quite seen before. He shook her shoulders and tears began to fall down her face.
"Look, I didn't mean to scare you" he says softly
"You didn't" she says, turning back around. She looks up at him through the mirror. "You wanna know what did scare me though? When you nearly took my head off with a guitar in New Zealand, or maybe right before that when you kicked me...or maybe the time-"
"Okay, I get it. You can stop."
She sighed heavily. The other band mates were just watching it all happen, heads turning this way and that like they were watching the rackets returning the ball at a Tennis match. She got up from the vanity to walk past him but he grabbed her arm.
"Please let me go, Lindsey. I'm tired and I'm sure we all want to go home"
"But I'm not finished" he tells her. "What happened to us Steph?"
"You can't call me that anymore. We can't go back there" With that, the others left the room to give them space. The air was like the eerie serenity after a big storm- when you look around and see there is nothing left but the remnants of what life used to be.
"Hear me out. Please?" She crossed her arms and let him continue. "I know I'm an ass, I know I'm immature. You and I both know we are to blame for these blazing rows..."
"So what, we play nice until you want to wing something else at me or I slam a door in your face and disconnect the phone so you can't call me?! What kind of life is that?"
"It's not. I'm trying to fix this" He waves her over to the couch then goes over himself to sit down. Neither speak for a couple minutes.
"When you left I felt so alone. You were my love, my life... without you I'm absolutely nothing"
"Then why would you treat me like that. I know I'm no angel..."
"But you are Steph. I love you with everything I have. If I could go back in time...I'd tell Mick to shove it." Stevie giggles quietly. "I'd get a job and lessen the burden you carried, we'd have a home, and try again for that baby we wanted. Don't you remember all of our dreams, babe? Those kids in that coffee warehouse, sleeping on the floor, keeping warm with body heat and...love" She blushes and moves closer to him on the couch. He wraps an arm around her and she snuggles into his side. "Babe, think about it. We could leave this all behind. All this stuff, we could give it up"
"You know we can't do that. They depend on us to keep this band afloat. We can't leave them. And don't you remember how poor we were? We couldn't afford to feed ourselves let alone the baby. There is a reason for everything. This was our destiny"
"Well, we can change that"
"But don't you remember?" She wants to remind him of all of the problems that had, as he had a tendency to romanticize their past and she hated it. He stops her with a kiss and she deepens it, hands going up and down his back. They pull away, most likely unwillingly but it was getting late and they could always continue it at the hotel.
"Let's un-remember it! What do you say?" He looked at her expectantly, his blue grey eyes showing all the wonder of a child. She nods as well, biting her lip. "Okay?" He asks.
She nods again. "Okay, we can give it a shot" He embraces her tightly and gives her a kiss on the temple. "Just don't fuck it up, Buckingham"
"I won't angel. I promise, I will give you the world if you just let me"
"Take me back to the hotel" She tells him, getting up and gathering her things. "I've got plans for you tonight" She winked mischievously and he followed her out of the venue. Their life as they knew it was now in the rear view mirror.
The End
A/N- just a little one shot while I'm thinking of a direction for Brokenness Aside. Thank you for your support as always.
