Chapter 10

I hate leaving author's notes but this is important, I guess. In my stories I would put a few 'Point-Of-Views' or in other words, perspectives. There will be one here, so enjoy!

Hero grabbed his things and pushed his legs against the stone, backing away from the woman. He dropped his quill again.  The woman, Melanie, rolled her eyes and carefully set the quill down on the rock. She looked back at Hero and snapped, "Oh, will you stop being scared and retrieve this godamn feather?"

Hero shot out and grabbed the quill. He stuffed it hastily in his bag and gulped. Melanie sighed an lifted a blue scaly tail from the water. "Yes, I am a mermaid. Just be glad that it was me who found you. If the others saw you, they'll be dragging you underwater to gobble your pretty head up."

Hero was still a little dazed when he met her. Melanie saw it in his tinted cheeks and when he bit his lip. She laughed and said, "Aw, was my charm that strong? Don't worry, friend, I have no intentions to eat you. I prefer fish, really."

"Y-You won't eat me?" Hero stammered.

The mermaid huffed and repeated, "I have no intentions, human. I said that already. Besides, I-"

Both their heads snapped to the sea when a chorus of beautiful singing was heard. Hero wanted to crawl nearer to the melody but Melanie blocked him, getting onto the rock and hugging him. Tight.

The boy was broken from the trance when he realized that Melanie was pressing up against him, naked. He gasped as Melanie smirked. "Oh, a teenager boy? No wonder why you're so flustered."

Her smirk turned into a frown as the singing grew louder. She whispered in Hero's ear, "Get out of here, quick. Whenever you hear singing, run. They are attracting you to eat you. Go!"

She let go and Hero sprung up. He held his satchel tight to his chest and ran towards his home.

"Woah, did you fall in the water? You're drenched."

Dianne was in his room, with Hero's damp shirt in her hands. The boy was changing into his dark wear, since he was supposed to be training in the forest at night with Ivan.

He froze and said, "I... Got splashed. The tides were high today."

Dianne cocked her head and shrugged. "Alright then. Be safe. Oh, and Puppy?"

Hero stiffened at the nickname. He groaned and snapped, "I got bitten by that damned wolf cub three weeks ago! You'll never let me forget. What?"

The girl looked triumphant for a moment before going over to whisper, "Thanks for telling Ivan about what I feel. He taught me how to farm and craft items instead. I can supply food and weapons for you guys. If you go round the back, you'll see my farm."

Her voice grew louder as she jumped on the spot excitedly, "I have watermelons, pumpkins and wheat! Ivan's going to take me out to the forest tomorrow and catch some animals for other stuff. Chickens for eggs and cows for milk!"

Hero grinned and suggested, "You can make cakes with wheat, milk and eggs if I'm not wrong... We can add berries as well. I'm happy for you."

Dianne wrapped her arms around Hero, muttering, "But you were the one who gave me all these opportunities, thanks a lot, Puppy."

Hero hastily took and arrow from Ivan and prepared his bow, aiming at a bunch of bushes far away. The bushes rustled and two pairs of red eyes stared back at him. Ivan was hiding in the tree a few meters away, pointing to the spider. He was urging Hero to release the arrow and kill it.

Hero could feel his heart go up to his throat as he found it difficult to breathe. He can't kill that innocent thing. It was not even making a move towards him, so why bother. Thankfully, he heard something rattle behind him. He swerved around and ducked an arrow shot by a skeleton. He slid right in between the skeletons legs and shoved his dagger right into its skull.

The skeleton's bow and arrow dropped to the forest ground and a large heap of bones fell on top of Hero. The skull broke and faded to dust. The boy sat up and spat out some he caught in his mouth and snarled at the taste.

"Are you alright? The spider got away, stupid little thing."

Hero turned to look at Ivan, leaning over to pull him up. Hero dusted dirt and leaves off his pants before stiffening at Ivan's words. He cleared his throat awkwardly, it was an innocent spider, he would never want to hurt one.

•••••???'s Perspective•••••

He nearly killed me. Killed me.

But he didn't.

He went for that bastard skeleton who dared touch him. I had no idea why I was so entranced by him, really. It's like... I have this feeling where I want to protect him. With my life, even.

He's a human, though, and a relationship between someone like me with a human would be... Wrong to lots of people, or creatures.

I had normal human parents, but one day, bad people got a hold of my mother when she was pregnant with me. They used her for sick experiments, and I was affected.

They weren't exactly cruel, or so I thought. They made her to an artificial spider hybrid, a mixed breed of both cave and regular. Then, they found out she was pregnant, with me and kept her to find out if I would be a hybrid as well.

The conditions they kept my mother were not exactly good, so, my mother died giving birth to me. How I knew this? Stories from the other experiments at the facility who knew my mother, and when I escaped the facility, I found my file and left the facility.

There was only a few faults when I was born.

I had weird eyes. Spider hybrids kept their normal eyes in human form, but have the typical black-and-red spider eyes in spider form. I have black eyes with red slits in both spider and human form. I was also a mixed breed, the second to be made so far, after my mother.

Cave spiders are usually very small, but apparently there were some genetic defects, and mixed breeds were larger than both regular and cave spiders. My mother and I were huge in spider form, and our webs were a lot more thicker and stronger.

Other than that, I was fine.

Mating seasons were... Interesting. Usually females would present themselves the best they can in order to attract a possible mate, and males would be more territorial and aggressive. I couldn't avoid my instincts, of course, but I never stayed with a female. Regular spiders can have several mates every season, but cave spiders mate for life. It gets really hard sometimes.

I'm just following this short human. Sometimes I watch him from his home, watching him fight, cook (his food smell delicious, unlike the girl's) and interact. I shook my head and stared down at the human from the branches and grumbled to myself.

"What on earth are you getting yourself into, Noah?"
