59.
Luke wandered back to where his ship sat. Artoo beeped a greeting, but is then ignored by his depressed master. Luke knelt down, and began to help Artoo with the ship, then stops and shakes his head dejectedly.
"I can't do it, Artoo. I can't go on like this." Luke said, feeling as though his training wasn't finished.
"Yoda will always be with you." Anakin appeared, having landed further ways away he approached his son.
"Anakin..." Luke uttered.
"You must bear in mind all that Yoda taught you, Luke." Anakin assured him, "If things weren't crazy before, it's going to be."
"Why? Why didn't anyone tell me earlier? You all knew?" Luke asked, a hint of anger and bitterness coming back. Anakin sighed, preparing to have this conversation again.
"I wanted to tell you the minute you showed up on my doorstep, Obi-Wan told me I shouldn't and I wanted to do what was best for you. You had to be prepared." Anakin explained.
"You told me Majka betrayed and murdered my mother." Luke clenched his jaw, "How could I ever trust you after that?"
"That was Obi-Wan who-" Anakin started to sigh but it was no excuse, he was an adult now. As much as he dreaded talking about this again, he let that happen and thats the truth, "Your mother was seduced by the dark side of the Force. She ceased to be (Y/N) Skywalker and became Darth Majka. When that happened, she betrayed everything and everyone that she had ever believed in. The good man who was your father was destroyed. So what we have told you was true... from a certain point of view."
"A certain point of view!?" Luke turned away from his father. Disappointed and disgusted.
"Luke, you're going to find that many of the truths we cling to depend greatly on our own point of view." Anakin shared his wisdom, sounding so much like his Master disgusted even himself.
"You let me think I was training to face my mother's killer. Not to slay my own flesh and blood." Luke cut his father viciously with his words.
Anakin studied him in silence for a moment. He hated to even hear that he wanted to kill his mother's killer. That somehow Yoda tricked him to think that was his mission. Since when did Jedi' decide that they're soul purpose was to kill others? Anakin always had a disliking for death, maybe because it's his wife and that makes him biased, but he saw more harm than good in killing others before talking.
"I don't blame you for being angry." Anakin nodded, understanding and seeing the same anger he had as a child, "If I was wrong in what I did, it certainly wouldn't have been for the first time. What happened to your mother... was my fault." He swallowed, finally saying his thoughts out loud, "(Y/N) was not just the mother of my children, she was the love of my life, my best friend. Had I focused on her instead of the war for a few more moments.."
Luke turned with interest at this. As Anakin speaks, Luke settles on a stump, mesmerized. Anakin joins him at the side of the stump. Artoo comes over to offer his comforting presence.
"When I first really met her, your mother was already the best shot in the academy. But I was amazed how strongly the Force was with her. She humbled me. All I ever wanted was for her to care for me. Or to at least admit that I wasn't crazy for having such strong feelings for her." Anakin blamed himself further, had he just followed his Master's orders maybe he could've avoided this. But also maybe if the Order accepted them, none of this would've happened.
"What did she say?" Luke asked, he wasn't looking at him. But he longed for a paternal figure so much as a child, he felt a certain part of him grow just from listening.
"She slapped me." Anakin laughed lightly to himself.
"She slapped you?" Luke rose an eyebrow.
"That's when I knew I loved her. She was so fiery and powerful. More importantly she understood me, our mission, our need to help others through the Jedi. As a teen it may be hard to believe that I wasn't always this patient and wise, she brought me to the light. That being said she did all she could to prove everyone wrong, which got her into trouble a lot." Anakin smiled, then it slowly faded as the truth of the situation revealed itself, "But the Emperor sensed her power. And he was able to lure her to the Dark Side.. my pride and ignorance is what got the galaxy here."
"There's still good in her." Luke admitted after a long silence. He felt it in Cloud City, he just never wanted to admit it. Hate is a much less complex feeling than love and loyalty.
"I also think she could be turned back to the good in her. It's there. It couldn't be done before..." Anakin's shoulders fell with the weight of regret and hardship, "The Emperor morphed and created her until she became more machine now than man. Twisted and evil."
"I can't do it, Father." Luke shook his head, killing his family is something he couldn't do, not really. He fought his whole life just to get his family back.
"You cannot escape your destiny. You must face Darth Majka again if you want your mother back." Anakin admitted, "Just because you face her, doesn't mean it has to end in death. This galaxy has seen enough death."
"I tried to stop her once." Luke sighed, "I couldn't do it."
"Majka humbled you when first you met her, Luke. But that experience taught you, among other things, the value of patience. Had you not been so impatient to defeat Majka then, you could have finished your training here with Yoda. You would have been prepared." Anakin pointed out.
"But I had to help my friends. And you." Luke made his point, crossing his arms.
"And you did try. From what I heard it was them who had to save you." Anakin put a hand on Luke's shoulder, "You achieved little by rushing back prematurely, I fear."
Luke is somber, quiet, reflective. He knows Anakin's right. Anakin sighed, seeing so much distaste and his own impatience in him. It made him regret passing on his genes, he barely knew how to handle himself. Then he remembered Ahsoka, what he needed to do to get through to her and what he always wanted from Obi-Wan: confidence.
"To be a Jedi, Luke, you must confront and then go beyond the dark side - the side your father couldn't get past. Impatience is the easiest door - for you, like your mother and I. Only, your mother was seduced by what she found on the other side of the door, and you have held firm. You're no longer so reckless now, Luke. You are strong and patient." Anakin assured him.
"I can't do what you expect of me. I can't see Majka." Luke got up and began walking away.
"Luke, please. The prophecy stated there would come a time when evil needed to be overturned, the council thought it was me but you're far more powerful now. I can think of no one better than my son to-" Anakin stood, ready to go after when Luke turned back with more fire.
"Why should I even try to be a Jedi?" Luke questioned, "Was it not the distrust in the Jedi what pushed my mother over the edge? Kept your love as something to be afraid of? Forced me and Leia into hiding? The Jedi are the reason I never met my mother, the reason I'll never know if your stories are true because all I see is a crippled, mangled, lost woman."
Anakin stood there, listening. Luke was right. He had been so deaf before, Anakin hadn't lived the Jedi lifestyle in years and never even realized it. The Jedi had become his identity, who he was but Anakin never really believed in it. He believed in helping others, the other rules only caused issues. Expecting of children to not feel, not speak or think their own thoughts brainwashed him. All these years he thought he'd been crazy.
"Don't pass your failures onto me. Don't push your prophecy on me." Luke finished, quieter than before. Anakin sighs and looks down, defeated.
"Forget the prophecy." Anakin said, sparking Luke's interest, "I'd be lying if I didn't think time to time it was a load of bantha fodder. Luke, together we are the only ones who can bring your mother home. I understand, the Jedi and the Sith have ruined and ripped apart the galaxy for years. Maybe you're right. I want to help, I want to figure something else out for the bettering of the galaxy. But I can't do this alone."
"Why don't you ask Leia?" Luke shook his head, not wanting the weight of the galaxy on him.
"She hasn't been trained in the ways of the Jedi the way you have. Leia is destined for greatness that is beyond our own warrior status." Anakin explained, "But the Force is strong with her, as it is with all of our family. Luke – the coming battle does not have to be yours alone. Majka's vision isn't clouded by sentiment. Nor is the Emperor's. Automatically that's a weakness for us." Anakin explained. Luke slowly, reluctantly, nods.
"I thought she remembered you?" Luke remembered.
"She.. did." Anakin pained in past tense, "The Emperor took her away from us again. He wiped her memories. Your mother and I share more than just an emotional tie to each other we've gained a force bond. I reached out to her, but she had no idea who I was."
"Well, that sounds like a great start."
