Chapter 4. Reunion
I looked at myself in the mirror, putting my hair in a side braid. I'd been staying in the guest room of the pack house a few short forest lengths away from Baine's home and training facility. Today I was going to see my brother and his mate! My heart yearned for the two of them. I wanted to be in their embrace. They were my only family now.
Plus I didn't get a good look at who else survived the attack. The memory of my mom begins to plague my mind so I shake my head and begin to think of other pointless things. Such as Elijah.
When I first met him, he didn't smell like this pack. Perhaps he was a survivor of a terrorized pack? But how did he manage to become a Beta of Red claw pack? Baine didn't seem like the type to allow someone else from another pack easily become the beta. I made a point to find out more later.
I studied my face in the mirror, realizing all the bruises from the fight were now fading. I just had a cut on my eyebrow and lip but other than that I felt fine. I put on a simple white t-shirt with long sleeves, followed by black leggings and simple tan boots.
I gave myself a once-over, feeling tingly and antsy. I just wanted to be with them now. I missed them more than I realized. I even felt my wolf pining at the thought. Grinning in excitement, I opened the door and made my trek down the lonely stairs. No one was really ever here. All the packmembers from the pack were always training or busy doing pack duties.
I never felt more alone. That's why the thought of seeing my Jax and Sarah bring me so much ahappiness. I just hope they're ok, and his horrible packmembers haven't done anything too horrid to them.
The steps creak beneath my marching feet as I make my way to the lonely kitchen. I quickly grabbed a banana and walked outside.
Surprised, I see a silver porch sitting outside, with Elijah leaning against the side, wearing a tux and smirking. I smile at him, confused.
"Uh, what's this?" I ask as I close the door behind me and walk up to him.
"My car and your transportation."
I reply with nothing but a giddy smile. Pleased with this, he opens the passenger door for me with a charming smile. His eyes crinkle at the sides due to this. I take his hand as he holds it out. I giggle when I sit down and he closes the door for me.
It's not a second later until he's walking to the other side and turns the car into ignition. Wee leave the empty driveway, and begin the drive.
"So where has Satan been keeping them?" I asked.
"Sat-" but he pauses and lets out a breath of laughter when he realizes I'm talking about Baine.
"Well, Alpha Baine, instructed our prison gaurd - Will - to keep them in a pack house but with a close eye. He doesn't want them to try anything, ya know?" He replied casually. I crossed my arms. He was keeping them caged like how he was with me.
"How many pack houses are there?" I asked.
"Well," He started, turning the wheel. "You must be aware of our pack's power and wealth. We have a pack house for teenagers and young adults - such as yourself. That's the house where you've been staying. Then we have one for the elders, kinda like an old folks home. Can't have them forgetting that they're werewolves and have them spilling our secret," He said, making me chuckle. This pack clearly had a lot of members, no wander they were so powerful.
We only had one pack house back in my pack.
"Then there are houses like the Alpha's house, where him, I and others that prove importance to the pack reside. His trusted colleagues, or family members stay there."
At this I felt my heart sting. I was being kept at a place where teens resided and I wasn't important enough to be in his quarters? I was the "Luna"! Well fine, I'd rather be with a bunch of teenagers than that stupid beast anyways.
"So where did he keep them?" I asked, because he didn't really answer my question, just avoided it.
"They stayed with the elders."
"Why there?"
"Well, he put them to work. Elder wolves aren't easy to deal with, trust me," He replied with the roll of his eyes.
I stayed silent as Elijah pulled into a small road with a gate in the very front. He leaned out of the window and punched in a number before it opened. We drove up a small hill, leading to a large grey house. There was a large flag that stuck out of the top of the house that had three slashes in red imprinted in it. Redclaw. How ironic.
"We're here," He announced, unbuckling. I however didn't waste any time getting out of my seat and hopping out of the car.
"Where are they? Where at they at?" I asked in a rush.
"Um, probably in the basement in little cells. . ." He trailed off. Feeling frustrated and angry that they were being treated like dogs, I glared at him. He frowned, looking down at his feet with his hands in his pockets.
I turned on my heel and raced to the porch with the entrance.
Without knocking, I grasped the handle and flung open the door. An old man sitting on the couch with a walker at his side stared at me with shock plastered on his face, but I paid him no mind.
"Downstairs basement?" I asked. He gulped, his adams apple bobbing. With shaky hands, he pointed to the a rail that stood up from out the tile ground in the kitchen a room over. Nodding, I left him and ran to the kitchen, my feet thumping with intensity. I looked down the railing to see a small spiral steel staircase leading down. Without hesitating, I began to make my way down, step after step, hurrying as much as I could.
As I reached the bottom, my eyes wearily searched the room.
"Elle?" Someone whispered. I turned my head to see a familiar face sitting in what seemed like a prison cell, yet there was a bed with clean sheets and a nice pillow.
"Sarah!" I shriek, running to her cell, Her eyes gleam with hope as she reaches for me and we interlock hands. I can't help the water tha drips down from my face at seeing her. She looks a little different, with her eyes seeming dull, and bags underneath her eyes.
"What are you doing here? Did you escape the Alpha?" She whispered, looking behind me with a new strange paranoia.
"Uh, not quite. Where's Jax?" I asked in a rush.
"I'm not sure. I haven't seen him since the attack. I think they send him to work and do chores during the night, and I work during the day to serve the old people," she whimpers sadly, and I see a tear fall from her damp lashes.
I feel my heart crack. My brother hasn't been able to even see his mate! That puts a strong strain on the mate bond and can be damaging!
"I'm going to fix this. I'm-I'm gonna get you out of here!" I say with a whisper.
"No! You can't! It's not that simple Elle! This Alpha, he's a monster, and so are his packmembers!" She cries, fear lacing her eyes. It was that same fear I recognized when she came to save me from the destruction of my pack.
"What? Why-?"
"I've seen what they do to people who try to leave, and I don't want that to happen. I'm scared Elle."
She whimpers, drooping her head, allowing her hair to fall in front of her face. My anger fills as I realize all the more terror my mate continues to do.
"I have to . . tell you something," I whisper weakly.
"What?" She croaks.
"Alpha Baine is my mate," I mutter. Her head snaps to mine with wide and frightened eyes. "No, it's not true! It's not right! He's evil! You're good, and he's bad! I'm so sorry Elle," she whimpers.
"I'm fine, but I need to find my brother."
"How did you get here anyway?" She asked.
"I told Baine to let me see you guys. Now that I know what he's been doing to you, I'm definitely not going to let it slide." I growl.
"Do you . . . like him?" She asks with horror.
"NO! I hate him! Why would you even ask me that?" I say with hurt.
"It's just that . . . no offense but an Alpha like that would never just let you see me or your brother."
"I got permission. It took a lot of persuasion. But I'm not going to let him -"
"Let him what?" I turn to see Elijah leaning on the stair case.
Unknowingly, Sarah's growls at him.
"I cannot believe you've been keeping them here like this! You turned them into slaves!" I say with rage.
"Not my choice," He says lowly.
"It will be one day." I growl.
Suddenly footsteps clank on the steel steps, and I feel myself lift in spirits when I see my brother walking down the stairs, but then theres a man behind him, pushing him down as if keeping him in line.
"Jax!" I shout. His eyes find mine and he smiles uncontrollably, then they land on Sarah.
At the bottom, he sprints past Elijah and to me and Sara. His arm wraps around me and other reaches for Sarahs. The gaurd that pushed my brother walks past us, and pulls out a key from his pocket.
Sarah's door is open and she's free. Immediately, she runs to me and Jax and we all embrace each other in a three way bear hug.
"I miss you guys so much," Jax mutters in Sarah's shoulders. I smile, wiping my eyes on Jax's shirt.
We stay there for a second longer until the gaurd's voice drags out.
"It has been instructed that these two are free from their duties as chore slaves to the olders. Instea announces shortly to Elijah.
"Thank you Will," Elijah said with a nod.
Will nods back before waltzing up the small stairs. Grinning, I turn to look at Sarah and my brother, who are in an intense makeout session. I roll my eyes and give them space, but I'm still smiling.
