Chapter Twelve

I woke up on the bench, with Flowey nudging my face and Sans sitting at the end of the seat.

"Hey, Kara. We have to leave right now."

"Right now?" I mumbled, now rolling off the bench and into the grass. It wasn't that far of a fall, in fact, I was used to it. Sleepily, I rubbed my eyes, trying to get my grogginess away from my mind. "I still need...to finish the sweater thing..."

"Kid, it's early, I know. I'm sorry, but if you want to get out of here, leaving now is the best time. No one is awake yet, and I could teleport you to the end of the barrier without getting much attention." Sans explained as he pulled me into my own feet, trying to steady my seating body. I yawned, trying to fix my own awareness on him.

"But your sweater...?"

"Who cares? I'd rather have you back to your mother than have you here any longer. Come on."

I blinked at him, trying to decide what to do with myself. Huh...

"But-"

"You don't get a say in this kid. We're leaving now." Sans' voice grew serious as he grabbed a hold of my arm.

"I don't want to go yet! At least let me finish this!" I yelled at him and yanked my arm out of his grasp. "I could finish it in a couple of hours!"

"Kara. This isn't me making the decision, okay?" Sans growled and grabbed my arm again, now keeping on an iron grip. "This is me getting you back to where you belong and back to your mother who is literally worried sick about you!"

I only felt my eyebrows curl out of a small pit of anger, causing me to scowl at him.

"Fine." I grumbled, feeling a small part of my heart fall apart. The world around me blitzed into an unfamiliar setting, giving me a sense of curiosity. I refused to act upon my wonder. I had better things to do, like focus on my sulking. Kara, this is the end, huh? Going home?

I looked around me, finding myself in a dark cave-like structure. Behind myself, I saw seven glass cases. Six of them were empty, but there was one that had a green colored soul, glowing softly. It looked exactly like my own.

"Sans...is that?"

"A human soul? Yes. That's a soul. One fell down here a couple years ago, and she got torn apart because she's just like you. Naive and too kind." Sans grumbled and pulled my glance away from it. His hands then clamped around my head as he stared me straight in the eyes. "Do you know what would happen to you if Chara wasn't so nice with you?"

He huffed, shaking me a bit.

"You'd be dead on Toriel's floor. You'd stay there, just as a dead, cold body and it wouldn't be until now that she comes and actually cleans and disposes of it. Yeah, she leaves you down there." Sans growled, his eyes started to weaken at the thought. "She has her own sanity to keep track of... Oh God..."

He let go of my head, now shaking his own.

"I don't want that to happen to you, kid. And sure as hell, I'm not letting them tear you apart like this poor kid." He muttered as he glanced over at the lonely soul. I didn't move towards it, in fact, I was kind of afraid of it. It was covered in splatters of blood, and it appeared to be looking at the both of us.

That could have been me.

I was so stuck into thought, I didn't realize Flowey slide off my hand until he actually fell off. He only gave me a weak smile, causing my body to sit down next to him. Slowly, I had my fingers twist around his petals sadly. I didn't really notice until now, but this was probably good bye. Already...

"You know, Asriel... You're better than anyone gives you credit for." I smiled at him, giving him a tight hug. "And thank you for saving my sorry ass in the Ruins. I didn't know what I was doing, but I'm glad you came back."

I could feel Sans glare against my back, almost scolding me again for swearing, but what could I say? He's been a huge influence.

"W-Well...what else could I do? Toriel has killed humans before when they tried to leave... You just happened to make it." Flowey let out with a chuckle and hugged me back with his leaves. I broke away from him, finding that he seemed a tad bit healthier.

"Watch over Toriel, okay? And help anyone that falls down, for all we know, they might make it." I grinned at him, again feeling that hole begin to sink into my heart. Flowey nodded, now pulling himself a little further away so I could address Sans.

I didn't really know what to say. I never had to say goodbye to anyone under such dramatic circumstances.

"This whole situation's fucked up..." I mumbled, hoping to bid a response, and I did. Sans pulled at my cheek lightly, glaring at me in amusement.

"What did I tell you about your damn language, kid?"

I only shrugged.

"Learned from the best."

From the look on his face, Sans was only able to grin as he pulled me into a tight hug.

"Sure as hell you did." He chuckled, now just hugging a little tighter. "Sure as hell you did..."

I laughed along with him, embracing him tightly as well. Slowly, my laughs softened into giggles, and eventually into a sigh. There was that certain compression in my heart; threatening to break.

"I'm gonna miss you, Sans..." I said, now looking at him. He only nodded in agreement.

"It's weird saying this, but I'm gonna miss you too..." His voice started off confident, but grumbled down into a skeptical tone. It must have been awhile since he's said anything genuially nice.

I nodded and leaned my forehead onto his chest. It hurt, knowing that in just a couple of moments, Sans was going to be just a memory. He wasn't going to be there anymore, not to watch over me or anything really. I'm kind of like a lost duckling in a forest of wolves. But now, there weren't anymore wolves. Just more ducklings past the barrier.

It scared me.

"S-Sans?"

"Yeah?"

"Mom always said that you were full of puns. What happened?"

"Lost that nature, I guess." Sans shrugged and sighed. "Weird how time changes you..."

I nodded, keeping quiet. What was I supposed to say now?

Flowey, this whole time, had been wandering around the darken hallway, looking here and there. His eyes wandering from the barrier exit to us. The flower would make his way over the exit, look at it, and then come back. He'd then do it again, almost as if trying to figure something out.

"Sans?" The flower tugged at the skeleton's slippers, his voice tight with realization.

"Yeah?"

"We messed up."

"How?"

"Sans, I know, it's been awhile. But can you tell me what it takes to leave the barrier? Just, remind me because, it's not adding up to me here."

"Well... doesn't the human just pass through?"

"No..."

I glanced at Sans, who's face was stuck with confusion at Flowey's sudden ramble. But, slowly, I watched as it shifted from calm to "oh fuck".

"Oh, we didn't think this out, did we?"

"What?" I looked at the both of them, now starting to feel confused myself. Flowey just turned to me, his face suddenly looking as if he was hiding something.

"It takes a human and a monster soul to pass through... You have to absorb a monster soul to get through the..."

Flowey trailed off into a quiet mumble.

"I mean, I could just kill some low life-"

"No!" I growled at Sans, feeling myself start to mimic his reactions. "We are not killing anyone for the sake of me leaving!"

"You can't just stay down here, kid!"

"You can't just kill other people, Sans!"

"Do you know what's for the better?"

"Yes! I'd rather be killed here before you go and kill someone for my sake! In a way, I'd be the one murdering them, and that's not fair, is it?!"

"When was anyone ever fair around here?!" Sans asked, now raising his voice at me.

"So are you saying that you should just follow the crowd? Doesn't really make sense if you ask me, Sans. Especially from you."

"What are you talking about?"

"Remember? I shouldn't swear just because you do it. But then, you go ahead and say that we can't be fair because no one else is!" I snapped at him, knowing that I had made a strong argument against him. "Fucking hypocrite!"

"Kid." Sans growled at me, now breathing heavily in anger. "Those are totally different things..."

"Are they? Are they so different? You know- you wanna know something? I live by this philosophy and I want to know what you would do." I spat at him, now glaring into his eye sockets. "If you had the choice to be right or to be kind, what would you chose?"

"To be right!" He exclaimed, now his eyes beginning to flicker red. "Why the fuck would you be nice when you could just gain their respect instead?"

"Because what is considered 'right'? You monsters are no different than humans. You all react like we do. You all think like we do. We all don't act upon what is actually, deep down to be bone 'right'. We act upon what is right to us and as you've seen, that doesn't work." I was now rambling on to him, feeling my anger start to shape within myself too. "But to be kind, you can get the best of both worlds. You can be nice and be right. And if you were wrong, you would still have the nice side of you to cushion your 'fall'."

"Kid, you don't know what's out there! Did you not get fucking killed in the Ruins? Did my own damned brother not kill you? Did you not die from prolonged injury?! In this world, it's not to be nice or right! It's literally, kill or be killed here. Your hell of a philosophy doesn't work here." He growled, his eyes started to phase off into a light blink of insanity.

"Says you." I grumbled, gaining a sudden sting across my cheek. I didn't budge, even though it hurt like hell.

"Yes. Says me. I am right, kid. Why can't you just believe me?" He exclaimed as his glance turned to his hand, which was shaking slightly from the the impact. Looks like he didn't mean it.

"Because I'm stubborn. Just like Mom is." I blinked at him, trying to not lose the upper hand. "It wouldn't matter if you killed another monster anyways."

"Why?"

"Because either way, I'm not leaving."

And when Sans saw that I wasn't kidding, his eye sockets went black.

"Kids like you..." He groaned and shook his head, allowing for his red pupils to come back. "...need to fucking learn what hell feels like." He paused, now blinking his pupils to white. "But then, there are damn idiots like me who won't let kids like you experience it."

"She won't have to." Flowey peeped up, now gaining the attention of the both of us. "I have an alternative."

His voice came out small compared to our argument, but I think at this point, if there was another way to leave, it appealed to both of our interests.

"How?" I asked, feeling a small sense of hope flutter in my lungs. Flowey lifted up one of his leaves, slowly revealing a small rectangle that has the word 'RESET' on it. It floated in the air peacefully, and it confused me. What was the purpose of a 'RESET' button?

Sans seemed to have understood.

"I would be on board with that plan, but if you did, what's going to prevent the kid from falling back in here?"

"Well... I don't know... But she won't be in here, and maybe we could find a way to-"

"Wait...." Sans yelped, now trying to weigh out his options. "Wait, wait, wait..."

He then started to mumble to himself, now picking out his thoughts. Slowly, his glance turned up to my face.

"Okay, kiddo. I'm just gonna do something, and well, we'll just see what happens." He muttered and straightened up towards me. His eyes blackened again, only this time, a flare of red bursted out of his left eye. Everything happened so quickly, and before I knew it, there were three bones in my chest, causing me to fall over, my breath starting to shallow. WHAT?

Pain began to spread through my body, becoming more and more intense as panic began to settle within me. Tears started to stream out of my eyes as Sans came into my vision, his face plastered with guilt.

"I'm sorry, kid. It'll make sense in a couple of minutes, just, I'm sorry..." He kneeled down next to me, his arms holding me against him. His voice started to become faded and muffled as black holes began to fill my vision. Before I lost myself, I saw a green heart emerged out of my chest, and just as before, a light layer of red covered it.

All I could feel was him rocking me back and forth, and possibly some of his tears on my face. My hearing was muffled and faded, but I could still hear him

"I'm sorry...I'm sorry...I'm sorry...I'm sorry..."

I died in the next couple of minutes.

"Ah. Back again, I see."
