Chapter Seven
I felt someone come near my face, breathing heavily. Their presence suggested that they were just within inches of me, almost as if checking to see if I was truly dead. In the background, I could overhear the cries of the clustered monsters. There was also the occasional grunt of Sans and Undyne, which told me that they were still fighting. So, with the process of elimination, I was able to say that Papyrus was in front of me.
I flickered my eyes open, and seeing that I was right, immediately blasted a green shield around me, causing the taller skeleton to stagger away from me. Coughing, I pulled myself up, finding that I was weaker than the first time that Chara had brought me back. Looking down at my chest, I could see that the bone was out of me, and blood was lightly trickling down from my chest, but it wasn't as bad as when I first got impaled.
I pulled myself into my feet, now trying to grasp onto my chest as an attempt to stop the bleeding. I only coughed some more, now feeling blood come out of my mouth too. Oh God....
I gritted my teeth as I turned to Papyrus, who was startled by my sudden rising. He appeared to be confused with how I came back.
"HOW ARE YOU-"
"Doesn't matter!" I yelled at him, trying to have him hear me over the winds. He appeared to have heard me. His surprise was quick to boil down into seriousness, now spawning a wave a bones around himself, all aiming at me. I only copied his format with my own set of bones, all of which were outlined in green.
When he launched all of his attacks at me, I blocked them all off with my own and limped under the cover of all of flying dust. As I did so, I bumped into someone, letting out a frantic yelp as I did so.
"Ah!" I backed away, trying to control the ebbing pain in my chest, only to find Sans there, also heaving his way through the flying snow and bone dust.
"Kid?"
"Yeah?" I hobbled over to him, now placing a green shield over the both of us for protection reasons. Looking up at him, I found that he looked relieved with my presence.
"We'll talk about it later. Can you fight?"
"Can I?" I froze at his question, unsure of what to say. "I mean, yes, I can, but will I?"
"Are you serious-"
A ray of blue spears showered down onto my shield, sending a stop to out conversation. The snow and dust began to clear, revealing Undyne and Papyrus together. Papyrus held his gaze while Undyne broke into a smirk.
"Oh fun!" She chuckled and spawned a spear into her hand. She then tossed it a couple of times, as if to familiarize with it, and then flung it at my shield. It bounced off, but I could feel the force of her offense against my shield. I wasn't going to be able to hold it for long.
"Kid, I don't know how you came back, but I need you to help me."
"If that's by fighting, then I refuse. You don't solve anything that way." I muttered to him, again feeling the sharp pressure of Undyne's spear against my shield.
"Do we have that much of a choice, kid?" Sans asked, his eyes growing desperate.
"If I was in better shape-"
My shield began to flicker under the rain of Papyrus' bones. The jewels behind my ear began to grown warm, almost hot from improper use.
"Oh, dammit, dammit, dammit." Sans groaned, now glancing from me to the outside. "Okay, okay...."
He then placed his hand on my shoulder, and with a blink of light, everything went silent.
I only heard the sound of rippling water, and with some scanning, I could see that we were in a totally different location. All around were blue rock walls, with the occasional plant within the cracks. We were sitting on a bench and next to the both of us, was a tall, light blue flower. When I saw that there was no one to threaten us, I fell against the bench, now gasping for air. Pain still throbbed within me and it was getting harder to hold on by myself.
"Kid, what did Pap do to you?" Sans asked as he slid his jacket off of me. He then paused, unsure of what to do, and pulled down on the neck of his, now ruined, turtleneck to check the new wound. He winced at the sight.
"Threw a bone at my chest and it somehow broke skin and..." I didn't know how to continue that sentence. He killed me.
Sans nodded, seeming somewhat impressed.
"How you lived is beyond me..." He muttered and frowned a bit. Red began to cover his cheekbones, almost with embarrassment. "Gosh, today is going to suck."
"You think?" I muttered and sighed. Coughing a bit, I felt myself suddenly heave forward in pain, spitting out some blood. Tears began to well up in my eyes, and again, I started to freak out. "Sans....I don't want to die again."
"Die again?" He asked as he helped me sit back upwards and again, pulled down the neck portion of the sweater to take another look at the wound. I could tell from his expression that he was trying to work out on what to do.
"Y-yeah..." I mumbled, now not really sure of what I was saying.
"Well, kiddo. Don't worry about it." He said as he ran a finger over the wound, trying to figure out how to handle this whole situation without making it awkward. I, personally, didn't care anymore. "I'll be right back. Just...don't die"
He pulled his hand to himself and blitzed away. So, just don't die...got it...
I found myself almost choking for air, and just by looking at the wound, I could tell that the blood hasn't stopped flowing. Oh great...
I watched as my world grew fuzzy, and vision start to spin.
"Oh, no, no, no, no..." I mumbled to myself as a certain weakness came over me. "Don't die, don't die. That's all he's asking for right now, Kara. Come on. No dying."
My breathe started to get shaky, making my lungs less and less reliable by the second. Even though my hearing was fading, I was able to hear out what appeared to be my own voice. To my left, I turned to see that the flower next to me was reciting what I had just said.
"No dying. No dying." It murmured, almost like a reminder for myself. Glancing back down at my chest, I saw that green heart upon my chest. It was beating along with my weakening heartbeat, covered in a thin veil of red. But there was something that concerned me. That red layer appeared unstable, and when I saw it flicker off and back on, a jolt of shock rippled through me. No! Wait! What's happening?
Before I knew it, I saw Sans appear, equipped with bandages, something that appeared to be rubbing alcohol, and other items. I couldn't hear what he said, but he appeared frantic.
My eyes then did a force shut down, allowing for me to see that familiar darkness again.
But I felt more than familiarity. This time, I felt like I might not make it, and I could feel my nerves spark at the thought. No dying...
And I died from my injuries.
"But it refused."
"Kara?!"
I felt myself being shaken awake, now gasping for air again. All I could think about was that single thought. No dying.
Coughing, I brought myself back into reality, seeing Sans there, his eyes wide.
"Oh my God!" I blubbered out, feeling tears falling out of my eyes. "Oh my God..."
My face was dug into my hands, trying to hide away into my own little corner. I wanted to run away from everything, because everything scared me so much. Why?
"Kid...are you okay?"
"No...I'm not, Sans." I muttered and scrunched up into my own little ball, trying to hide from him too. It was bad enough that I was crying, but crying in front of someone was kind of unacceptable for me.
I felt him sit down next to me and toss his jacket over my shoulders.
"Kid, I hate to break your...crying thing," He grumbled awkwardly at that statement, "but I need to patch you up."
I made no objection and slowly unraveled myself, exposing my chest to him. Turning away, I tried to focus on my own thoughts as he started to poke around sweater and the wound. With some time, he somehow patched it up and glanced at me. By that time, I had silenced myself into sniffles, now feeling quite embarrassed.
Sans reached over and turned my head towards him, that why I was looking straight at him.
"Hey, Kara. What happened?"
"What happened?" I croaked out, feeling my lips begin to quiver. He nodded.
"I can promise you that I will most likely believe whatever happened to you." He muttered out hesitantly. "And if I'm right, whatever it was,cit happened three times today."
My eyes widened in surprise, causing the lingering tears to fall out.
"I died. Three times today." I murmured out quietly, now wincing at the neverending pain I felt. "And I came back exactly where I fell, three times today."
Sans seemed confused and I addressed it quickly.
"Yeah, I don't know how either. I mean, when I die, I meet that Chara girl you mixed me with. She brings me back."
"Chara?" He gave me odd look, almost as if accusing me of lying. I nodded and tried to hold back my fear, but it was working my nerves far better than I was.
"Yeah." I looked up at him, now feeling the tears hit me again. "It's scary... especially this last time. She almost failed and I felt it."
I then choked on my tears, feeling them fall.
"Oh God, Sans. What if I'm too stupid to live? So far, I've been making choices that's killed me...and this whole time I've been advised to kill others, but I don't want to! That's...not right... I'm scared." I cried out, now just rambling on. I caught myself and held my mouth shut, wiping away my own tears. "But why am I telling you? You would just agree with them."
Sans was silent, which probably meant that I was right. I stuck to my sniffles, now feeling lonely in this world. I will stand alone if I have to.
We sat there for awhile, with me trying to pull myself together and push away the fear and Sans probably thinking about what to do. Why doesn't he just leave? I know he's protected me this far, but I'm such a burden... I mean, why?
"Kid?"
"Hm?"
I felt him pick his jacket off of me and hung it over the bench. With that, he wrapped his skeletal arm around me and before I knew it, I found my face against his shoulder.
"Don't cry."
"But...why?" I asked, unsure of what to think. I heard him take in a deep breathe, and lean his head a bit closer into my shoulder.
"Because it reminds me of your mother."
And for the first time, I heard his voice quiver, causing my eyes to widen in surprise. He continued on.
"And it hurts, kid. It kills me on the inside, so, in a way, I get you."
He paused and sighed.
"It scares me too."
