the document proposal
Cameron stared at Bill and Matty.
"So. What was this? Some kind of bullshit initiation or something."
Bill lit a cigarette.
"No. This was just our way or relieving boredom on a Friday afternoon."
"Shouldn't these people be working."
"They only work until noon on Friday," Bill informed him, leaning forward.
"See, these men actually work. Something I can only assume that you don't do."
"I beg your pardon."
"Cut the bullshit Cameron," Matty suggested.
"You think we didn't do our checking on you? That's why we let the boys here have some fun with you. It gave us time to make some inquiries."
Cameron fiddled with his cellphone.
"Inquiries?"
"We know you were fired from your last job. I talked to Ben Humphries and he was very happy to tell me that you were let go basically because you were a lazy shit, who was more interested in being a lawyer in name, and using that to attract women, but not actually doing any real work.
You had three simple cases, he informed me and somehow, you actually managed to fuck them up."
Matty laughed, as she sipped her beer.
Cameron looked toward the bar, as Jarge and Mabel seemed to laugh at him.
Laughter erupted through the Pub.
"Dem two birds bes smarter den youse," Billy Rideout called out.
"Maybe dey shud become lawyers. Obviously it bes easy."
Again the two gulls laughed, flapping their wings, as they did so.
Matty turned around.
"Jarge. Mabel. Come here loves."
The two gulls jumped down from the stool and waddled across the floor toward the table.
"Jest a second," Lindsay yelled, as she approached the table with a roll of paper towels. She put the paper towel on the seat of the chair and petted the two gulls.
"No shittin' on the chair."
The two gulls nodded and jumped up on the chair, settling in side by side. Both stared at Cameron.
"Seriously?"
"You got a problem with our pets?" Bill wondered.
Matty petted the two gulls.
"From what Ben told me, you couldn't get a job anywhere in St. John's and the last he heard of you, you moved to Edmonton and set up a small practise in some strip mall in the town of Devon, just south of Edmonton.
Seems that didn't pan out either, as you got evicted from the mall for back rent. Then you kinda disappeared for a while."
Matty smirked, as she lit a cigarette.
"So? What were you doing for the last couple years?"
She sat back in her chair and stared at Cameron.
Cameron sat in nervous silence picking at the label on his Stella Artois beer.
"'e were probably flippin' burgers somewhere," Wike Rideout barked.
Again laughter filled the Pub.
"You're not far off, Wike," Matty assured him.
"Is he, Cameron?"
Cameron finished his beer and held up the bottle.
"Can I have another?"
"Ise will bes buyin' dis one," Billy Rideout informed Yolanda.
He looked at Cameron.
"Wud youse be wantin' a side order of fries wit dat?"
Laughter again.
"This is bullshit," Cameron protested.
"Is this how you have formal meetings. In a fucking Pub."
He pointed at Jarge and Mabel.
"With fucking birds."
Jarge snapped at Cameron's finger.
"I'd be careful, if I were you," Bill laughed.
"He will take the finger right off."
"'e like nipples too," Henry Tucker laughed.
"Ha, ha, Henry," Bill laughed.
Jarge looked at Bill laughing.
"And you be quiet or we'll fatten you up for a barbecue."
Jarge put his wings over his head.
Cameron stared at Matty.
"This is insanity. I am here representing a client, with a very important proposal."
Bill petted Jarge.
"So, who is this client, Cam."
"I prefer Cameron."
Bill nodded, as he puffed his cigarette.
"The client, Cam. Who is it?"
"I cannot divulge that information at this point, only the stipulations of the contract."
Yolanda put the Stella in front of Cameron.
"Ohhhhhh, what big pretty words. Divulge. Stipulations."
She laughed as she walked back to the bar.
"The client Cam."
"I just told you ..."
Bill cut him off.
"Henry you got any anchors at the store."
"Ise got a couple 'undred pounders, Billy Boy. 'es bes a big boy. Youse mite need 'em both."
Bill stared at Cameron.
"This meeting is over unless you start talking. And no fucking bullshit."
"We know who your client is," Matty added.
"And we are pretty sure why he chose you. And it wasn't for your legal prowess."
Cameron looked around the Pub.
"Can't we do this in private?"
Bill shook his head.
"This is pretty much as private as it gets here in the Bay. Especially when it concerns the whole Bay. There are no secrets here."
Cameron took a huge mouthful of beer, as he looked around the Pub again.
"Okay," he sighed.
Matty leaned forward.
"You were working at one of Simon Hirst's businesses."
Cameron nodded.
"He has a cold storage company in Edmonton. I worked there for a couple years. One day he came to visit the warehouse and we started talking."
"And you told him about your past and how you were a very successful lawyer," Matty cracked, sarcastically.
"I told him the truth actually. Told him that I was a lawyer, but not a very good one. He wasn't that interested, until I told him I was from Newfoundland.
He started talking about a situation he had in Newfoundland.
I asked him where and he told me Tuckamore Bay."
"Let me guess," Matty snapped.
"You told him you once knew a girl from Tuckamore Bay."
Cameron nodded.
"When I told him that it was you, he asked how well I knew you."
Matty was shaking her head.
"I bet he nearly came his pants, when you told him that you were involved with me."
"I told him we were engaged, but that I ...
ah, I ..."
Matty stood up.
"You fucking what?"
"I told him I broke it off with you."
"You fucking broke it off with me?" Matty yelled.
She looked around the Pub.
"This fucker cheated on me with my roommate."
The Pub went silent.
Matty glared at Cameron and whispered to him.
"We don't like liars here. All I have to do is say the word and my family will end you. Do you understand?"
Cameron sat back in his seat, as Jarge jumped up on the table and started walking toward him.
"Okay. Okay. Fuck."
He waved at Jarge.
"Get that thing away from me."
"On your chair, Jarge," Matty said sweetly.
"Matty, youse wants Ise gits dem anchors fer youse?" Henry Tucker asked.
"Not right now, Henry," Matty smiled, as she sat back down.
She stared, wide eyed at Cameron.
"Now. The truth."
"Okay. Okay. I did tell Hirst that I broke up with you."
"And what reason did you give?" Bill had to know.
Cameron picked up Bill's pack of cigarettes.
"Can I have one?"
Bill smirked.
"Knock yourself out."
Cameron quickly lit one, inhaled, coughed, sipped beer and sat back in his chair.
"I told Hirst that Matty wouldn't have sex with me, so I broke up with her."
He took small puffs on the cigarette, blowing the smoke out quickly.
"I also told him that Matty was broken hearted and she kept trying for the next year, to get back with me."
Matty rolled her eyes and crossed her arms.
"Yea, right."
"Hirst then told me he wanted to have a meeting with me. That he had a proposal that might benefit both of us.
He took me out that night for a fancy dinner and made me an offer."
Cameron took several more quick puffs on the cigarette.
Matty reached across the table and took the cigarette from him, snuffing it out in the ashtray.
"Fuck, you look stupid."
She finished her beer and held up the bottle.
"The proposal, Cameron."
"Hirst asked me if I thought I could persuade Matty to accept his offer.
I told him I could. I told him Matty would be like putty in my hands and I would have her back in my arms in no time.
He told me about Bill, but I assured him that he would be no problem."
Cameron took a mouthful of beer, as Yolanda brought Bill and Matty beers.
"He gave me a fifty thousand dollar retainer and arranged for me to get an office in Corner Brook. He paid all my expenses and a five thousand dollar a week salary, until I got the proposal signed. Then I would get a $250 thousand bonus and our business relationship would be over."
"Did he tell you why he wanted the Bay?"
"No. All he told me was that he had a proposal drawn up and all I had to do was convince you to sign the document. Once it was signed, my job was done."
Bill laughed.
"And of course, if you got Matty back in the deal, that was a bonus."
Cameron looked at Matty.
"I knew I could never get Matty back and in all honesty, when I talked to Hirst, I had no interest in getting her back."
"And now?" Bill had to ask.
Cameron laughed.
"Would it matter?"
Matty answered.
"You are a self centred, arrogant, narcissistic, asshole. You care only for yourself and you don't have an ounce of empathy or compassion in your body.
You aren't even worthy of being in the same room as Bill.
Does that answer your question?"
Cameron nodded.
"A little over the top, but I get the point."
He laughed slightly.
"So, I guess that showing you the proposal is out of the question."
Matty held out her hand.
"Show me."
Cameron looked surprised, as he picked up his briefcase from the floor and opened it. He passed the document to Matty.
Matty held it up in the air.
"Linny?"
Lindsay walked to the table.
"Scan and copy?"
"Thanks sweetie."
Cameron looked confused.
"What are you doing?"
"A good lawyer always collects as much information and documentation as they can."
Matty leaned forward, smiling.
"If you were a good lawyer, you would know that."
She sat back in her chair.
"This might come in handy, in the future."
Cameron took another piece of paper from his briefcase.
"So I guess getting you to sign this is out of the question."
Matty took the paper from Cameron.
"What is it, hun?"
"Just a confirmation that Cam here actually presented us with the proposal. I would think he doesn't get paid, unless one of us signs it."
Matty held out her hand.
"Pen."
Cameron passed her a gold covered pen.
Matty shook her head.
"Flashy, isn't it."
She wrote on the document and passed it back to Cameron.
He looked at it quickly and laughed slightly, to himself.
"Fuck off Hirst," he read aloud, " signed Matty and Bill."
He put the paper back in his briefcase.
"The pen?"
Matty shook her head.
"Didn't think so."
Matty passed the pen to Mabel.
"For your nest honey."
Mabel took the pen gently from Matty and jumped down from the chair, waddling toward the door. Jarge soon followed.
"Landa? Can you let my babies out."
Cameron watched as Yolanda opened the front door and the two gulls waddled out.
"That was a one hundred dollar pen."
"Now its a shiny new part of the gull's nest."
Lindsay returned to the table and passed the proposal to Matty.
"Scanned, copied, filed and I emailed a copy to youse, Matty."
Matty squeezed Lindsay's hand.
"Thanks sweetie."
Matty tossed the proposal on the table.
"You have our answer."
Cameron nodded.
"Look, Matty. I am sorry for ..."
Matty held up her hand.
"Save it. You are a part of my past that I want to leave buried there."
"Youse wants Ise gits dem anchors, Matty?"
Matty smiled.
"No, Henry. Mr. Penny will be leaving shortly."
Cameron looked at the beer in his hand.
"I can't drive."
Matty laughed, as she stood up.
"The keys to your car."
She held out her hand.
Cameron took the keys from his pocket.
"You gonna drive me home?"
Matty laughed, as she started walking toward the bar.
"Not exactly."
She tossed the keys to Lindsay.
"Have Freddy drive the Mustang. Let Gertie drive Mr. Penny home."
Lindsay started laughing.
"You are a cold bitch, Matty."
Matty took Bill's hand and kissed his cheek.
"Lets go make babies," she whispered in his ear.
She looked back at Cameron. Some of the men were already moving to his table. For a second she almost felt bad for him.
For a second.
As Bill and Matty walked into their house, a huge black truck roared down the cobblestone road.
Bill laughed.
"I almost pity the poor fucker.
Almost."
