Chapter 8

[Nona Larsen]

I'm lonely. I've always been, to be honest. The only time I felt I could count on someone was when I made out with Jarvis in that shower. But, now, I'm not even sure I'll have a chance to talk to him anymore.

What I certainly don't have is a roof under my head. Since I chose to leave school, and home as a direct consequence of my decision, no-one has been willing to help me out. It's fair. On one hand, I brought this shit to myself and have no-one else to blame for it.

On the other hand, it's not like anyone would bother helping me. I'll end up in some institution and keep a low profile. That is, if there's one that will take me in. Or maybe look for a job. But what about accommodation? Nobody would hire a homeless high school dropout.

My life is on the rocks, and I need a miracle to get it back in track.

The only place I can go now is... nowhere. I don't know what to do anymore. I'm lost. I'm broken. I don't know if I can keep up with this shit. I just want it to end, and never come back. I can't do this anymore.

I walk by the bridge, hands in my pockets and my head low in my hoodie. I never look up. I barely pay attention to my surroundings. I shut my mind off, leaving no room for any sort of thoughts. Now, it's blank. This is what I want. Not having to think of anything or anyone.

As soon as I'm there, I climb the wall and end up on the top of the bridge. I look down, then close my eyes and jump off to my demise.

It turns out Fate has a different plan in store for me. Instead of already being two meters under, I find myself lying on a hospital bed, with a huge cast on my left leg. Someone must've stopped me on my tracks, or simply the fall wasn't that great to lead me to inevitable death.

I suspect Fate wants to punish me by living a long, miserable life. It's time I come to terms with that, and find another path. Maybe I should leave the town. But what if my past catches up with me? What if someone else is out there to cause me even more trouble?

My only certainty, if it can be called such, is that I can't stay in this hospital for good. When they discharge me, I'll be back in the streets to fend for myself, with no-one to lend me a helping hand. That's for the best. I called it upon myself, and I have to face the consequences on my own.

The more time passes, the more I want it to stop. I hate this situation. I hate my life. I hate myself. Screw whoever thinks self loathing isn't a solution. Have I even got another choice?

The nurse who's supposed to take care of me doesn't even talk to me. She only gives me food, checks my vitals and makes sure I don't do anything reckless. I, obviously, stay put and don't even make eye contact. For some reason, I feel uncomfortable around her. She reminds me of someone, but I can't make out who...

I spend my days staring at the ceiling and crying. I have no other options, at least until I'm stuck here. Worse still, I'm not even sure I can afford the hospital bill. I'm screwed. I'm screwed for real. I need someone to lend me a hand. Oh, I don't just need someone. I need Jarvis.

My phone is by the drawer next to my bed. Since I can't count on any nurse to pass it to me, I have to grab it myself without making my leg pain worse. I extend my arm as much as possible. The phone is within my reach... I hear a noise of footsteps. I guess calling Jarvis can wait.

Yeah, that jackass nurse is back with her usual disapproving look. She lectures me again. "You'd better not have touched your phone while I was away." The moment I try to protest, she raises a finger and points it at me. "You're supposed to focus on rest and recovery."

I can't stay quiet anymore. "To do nothing? What's the point then, to be more stressed than I already am?"

She barks at me. "Don't tell me how I'm supposed to take care of you! You're being ungrateful right now, little miss." She leaves again, while I'm here on this fucking bed with my mood deep underground. I hate that woman from the deep of my heart.

When I find the doctor assigned to me, I'll tell them I want another nurse. I can't deal with that jerk's resentment and lack of professionalism anymore.

At last, that uptight witch's shift is over. This means that I have a few hours when I'm unsupervised. Moreover, dinner time has just passed. To say I ate shit is an understatement. Not even Mom cooks this poorly. However, if I want to recover, I have to put my big girl's pants on and swallow that stuff-and my pride.

Anyway, I extend my left arm to the drawer where lies my phone, unattended for hours. In fact, I see ten missed calls by the same number. Jarvis. He must've attempted to call me over the past few days. Okay, I have to reach out to him, let him know I'm okay. I can't keep him hanging forever.

I try calling him, but there's barely any signal, much to my frustration. I wait a few more minutes and try again, only to attain the same result. No wonder it's hard to catch up with life. Then, I remember there are other options. I send Jarvis a simple text message. 'Sorry for not answering earlier. That damn signal!'

Fearing it's not enough, I opt to send another one. 'By the way, I'm stuck at the hospital with a huge cast on my leg. Feel free to pass by when you can. I'll send you the address if you need. Kisses.' All I have to do is wait for an answer... Well, if the messages get sent quickly enough because of the low signal.

I check the time. 10pm. I don't feel like sleeping yet. There's a TV in the room, but I'm not really into watching it unless I'm desperate. Therefore, I stick to scrolling through my phone; to make sure it works, I insert the WiFi password, which I can find on the drawer.

What awaits me next are tons of promotional e-mails, notifications from Facebook, YouTube, Instagram and Snapchat. The Instagram interactions are brutal. Belkis and Beulah both think it's a good idea to insult me under my posts. With no hesitation, I report and block them.

Wow, they took a full 180° turn since the answer key incident emerged as they preferred siding with Catela over me. I tried to delude myself into believing it'd be just a phase, that they'd come to regret their poor choice and would try to make amends.

I've been dead wrong. If anything, the incident had them show their true faces, those of two callous, envious profiteers who only kept my company as long as it was convenient to them, before jumping sides. In case Catela decides to drop them, I won't have an ounce of sympathy for them. What comes around, goes around.

I'd better sleep, anyway. It's getting late and I don't plan to let my brain rot on social media bullshit again tonight.
