Chapter Three: Accusations
!Warning! Mild Cussing!
"Woah, Woah, Woah. What do you mean she was there?" Cole asked once everyone had returned. At the moment everyone was sitting around the dining room table except for Kai who had locked himself in the planning room with the note.
"Well, it's more of she was there and killed everyone BEFORE we got there," Jay explained. Cole nodded then typed something into his laptop.
"And you said there was a note?" Cole asked.
"Yep," Nya replied.
"Where is it?"
"With Kai." Cole tsked.
"What did the note say?"
"You're too late S.C," Zane replied.
"S.C. would make sense then..." Cole paused before shutting his laptop, "I'm gonna go check on Kai." With that, Cole turned around and headed upstairs.
Once there, Cole noticed that the only door shut was the planning room. He headed over and knocked on the wooden door. "Kai? You in there?" There was no answer. Just to be sure Cole tried the door handle only to find it locked. "Kai, I need you to open up the door."
No answer. Cole sighed. "Could you please open up the door?" There was still no answer but there was a small clicking noise. Cole tried the handle again and this time the door opened.
The planning room pretty much looked the same except for the fact that the pictures on the whiteboards had all been taken down and a single yellow note had been taped to the center of it. Kai stood in front of the board just staring at the note. "You okay?" Cole asked as he shut the door. Kai didn't say anything. Cole was about to ask again when Kai turned around.
"She knew we were going to be there." He stated.
"There's no doubt about it," Cole replied.
"How did she know?" Kai asked gesturing for Cole to take a seat. He sat down as Kai sat down at the head of the table.
"No idea," Cole said with a shrug.
"Really? No idea at all?" Cole shook his head as Kai continued talking, "Do you want to know what I think?"
"Uh...Sure?"
"I think, that someone on the team told her."
"What?! That's not possible!" Cole threw his hands up in the air dramatically, "There's no way anyone told her!"
"Really? Cause your footage did cut out. Never happened before..."
"If I had known that was going to happen. Don't you think I would've fixed it?" Cole scowled, "You know I would never betray you."
"I don't doubt that but I have to be cautious. Don't want a repeat of what happened last time."
"We wouldn't that, now would we?" Cole's voice began gaining in volume, "You know, I came up here to make sure you were okay, but you clearly don't need it!" Cole moved towards the door.
"Where are you going?!"
"Anywhere but here!" With that, Cole left the room slamming the door behind him. As he headed downstairs, he was met with an array of questions.
"Everything okay?" Jay asked.
"With Kai or me?" Cole asked grabbing a jacket.
"Both of you," Zane replied.
"Everything's fine," Cole put the jacket on and headed for the door. "If you need me, call me." With that, Cole left the warehouse and headed downtown.
For the beginning of winter, downtown was surprisingly busy. Crowds walked slowly on the sidewalks most likely Christmas shopping and shops had even sent out employees to gather customers. Thankfully none of them had bothered Cole and he kept on walking. A gust of wind blew by causing him to shiver and shove his hands into his jacket pockets. He smiled when he realized he left his phone at the warehouse. So much for the others contacting him. The crowd parted slightly and before Cole could figure out why he was pushed into another person. He quickly apologized then yelled at the other guy. "Hey! Watch where you're going!" As the man was turning a corner, he spotted an ever so familiar symbol. The small circular symbol was only worn by one gang and one gang only; her gang. And from what Cole could tell, the man was chasing a kid. Aw hell no, Cole thought before giving chase. Thankfully the crowd parted as he ran and Cole turned the corner only to see that the two were gone.
Thinking they had turned another corner, Cole continued running. He ran past an alley and skidded to a stop as he spotted the symbol again. Looking around the corner, Cole took out the pistol that he kept in an ankle holster. The pistol had been given to him by Kai when they first formed the gang and was to be used in an emergency.
The man was approaching a dumpster and Cole assumed that the kid had attempted to hide. "Come ou', come ou' wherever you are!" The man taunted a southern accent present. Cole stepped into the alley, his gun raised. Before he could say anything there was an ear-piercing shriek. "Got you!" The man chimed. He lifted his arm up and in his hands were the kid.
The kid was about 4" 2', blond, and had green eyes. He wore black tennis shoes, jeans, and a sweatshirt with white horizontal lines on it and a green number 5 in the corner. The kid was swinging his arms and legs attempting to hit his capturer any way possible. The man laughed, "The boss 'ill be happy I caught ya." As the man was turning around Cole leveled the gun.
"Put him down," He demanded. The man, who had finally turned around and spotted him, laughed then shook his head.
"Well look who it is!" The man laughed almost saying the words to the kid, "How's ta boss? Still mopin' around?" Cole didn't say anything. "I bet he is. How'd he like our wittle surprise?"
"I said put him down," Cole repeated as the kid continued to struggle. The man shook his head again.
"Nah. Whatcha gonna do? Shoot me? Besides, what's 'tis wittle punk mean ta you?" He shook the arm that held the kid as if to wake him up.
"I don't know what you want with him but I'm not going to let you get away with it." Cole clicked off the safety, "Now, put him down."
"Or else what?"
"Do you want to find out?" Cole asked hoping he came off as much more confident than he actually was. The man chuckled taking a step forward.
"I won' have to. You ain't gonna shoot ta gun." The man took another step forward.
"I will shoot!" Cole warned as the man stepped forward again. "I'm warning you!" Another step.
The gunshot reverberated around the alley as the man dropped the kid and clutched at his stomach. Cole clicked the safety on before putting the pistol back in his ankle holster. He walked over to the kid and sat down. Immediately the kid backed away, his back hitting the side of the dumpster. Cole sighed, "I'm not going to hurt you." The kid said nothing as Cole sighed again. "Any idea as to why he," Cole gestured to the man who was leaning against the wall as he bled out, "was after you?" The kid shook his head.
"You're not much of a talker are you?" The kid remained silent. "Okay." Cole reached into his jacket pocket for his phone. Wait, where's his phone? Oh, that's right, he left it at the warehouse. "Okay, on to plan B then," Cole stated standing up. "Think you can stay here while I go grab some-" The kid immediately started to shake his head, his eyes wide. "Okay then...uh...How about I just take you back to HQ?" The kid looked down for a second before looking to the man and then looking back to Cole. He nodded then stood up.
As Cole began leading the kid to HQ, he realized that he'd have to explain the whole situation to the gang. And chances were that Kai had convinced them that he was a traitor.
