Chapter Twenty

I've lost track of how long it's been since I got my straight jacket and shock collar. Stark came by at some point but he wasn't even told about my presence. If he was, he didn't come over to tell them anything. Maybe he couldn't do anything. Was I an idiot for holding onto this false hope? Yes.

As I sat on the floor, I tried to think of how I could've gotten out of this. Maybe I should've stayed in the hospital for recovery, but Secretary Ross would've gotten me that much sooner and easier. Maybe I should've stuck with Nat and went wherever she did, but then I may have been apprehended quickly as well. Maybe I should've gone with Stark to the hospital, but not only was it not my place, Secretary Ross could've gotten me easily there.

There was no situation I could think of that would've saved my ass from getting put in a cell. It was probably fate ending up here, getting shocked every now and then while strapped in a straight jacket. Besides, my whole life I had been subjected to sitting in a cell with nothing to hold onto but my own ridiculous optimism. With every jolt of electricity that passed through me, I was losing that optimism. It was a miracle I had any in the first place, but in a way it made sense.

While I was under Hydra's custody, I could at least hope that the Avengers would tear through the base and rescue me. Now that I was under the supposed good guy's custody I didn't see any reason for hope. The Accords bound everyone to stay away from the Rift.

I heard loud footfall outside my cell and looked up from my lap and out the window in front of me. Outside I saw the main guard who controlled the shocking systems, the other guard who was supposed to be there for reinforcements, and a new guy. He was mostly in the shadows (or maybe the light in my cell was so bright I just couldn't see anyone not right by the window) so I couldn't tell who joined.

Then he spoke. "When was the last round?" he asked the main guy. My eyes widened at the recognition of Secretary Ross' voice.

"About 30 minutes," he answered with a small shrug while looking back to face Ross. I already figured out what the next order was before he even said it, and I sank into myself and tried to curl into a ball. It wouldn't help, but it felt a little safer.

"Go again," Ross said after some consideration. I tensed in anticipation, but no matter how many times they sent bolts of electricity through me, I would never be able to fully prepare.

The instant shock caused my body to tense even more and I clenched my jaw shut, hoping to rid them of the satisfaction of me screaming, but the pain was too much and I let it all out. My throat burned from how much I had screamed already and my voice felt as though it would go out, yet I still found some more energy to make noise. I could just imagine the look of satisfaction that was plastered on Ross' face.

This round of electricity was lasting longer than before and I could just barely hear myself thinking "God please just make it stop". At this point I was crying, shaking, and my body gave up on holding me up and I fell over and landed on my right side.

Finally, after what felt like hours, the electricity was stopped and I was left to twitch on the ground as I tried to recover. Ross said something else before he left with more heavy footsteps. I closed my eyes and went dead weight as I laid on the ground. At this point, I just needed to accept that this was my new life.

Sam paced in his cell with his arms cross over his chest as he heard Rey's screams. They could all hear the pain she was being put through. He knew this was what she didn't want; this exact situation she was in was what she was trying to avoid by signing. Stark had stopped by earlier and left just in time to miss the screaming. If he heard it, Stark wouldn't be the same. Sam certainly wasn't.

Finally the screams stopped and Sam figured he'd have about another half hour before they'd start again. This round was definitely a lot longer though, so he knew Ross was making it worse and worse. The son of a bitch looked glad that Rey was knocked out cold and shoved into the transport he was in. The whole journey to the Rift, Rey was out and her head kept rolling back and forth with each bump. Sam tried to see if she'd wake up, but she didn't so much as flinch anytime he said anything. Scott didn't say a word but looked on with sorrow.

He ignored the guards and opted to stop his pacing and stand facing the wall opposite of the glass part of the cell. As he stood there, he got this...feeling to turn around. When he did, he saw the one and only Steve Rogers. Sam had a smirk on his face as Steve approached his cell, and the other smiled back at him.

"How'd you get in here?" Sam asked him.

Steve just shrugged and managed to break the cell door, allowing Sam to step out. "I used some good old fashioned patriotism," he said. Sam raised an eyebrow at him. "Alright, so maybe I knocked a couple guys out. No biggie." They laughed and moved about the area getting the others out.

Once they were all out Steve was set to get back on the jet and started to walk that way, but a hand was placed on his arm to stop him. Steve turned around and looked at Sam confused. "Why aren't we going?" he asked.

Sam sighed and looked at the others before looking back at Steve. "Because we have one more person to get."

I felt dead inside as I laid on my side, staring at the wall in front of me. There was nothing interesting about- it was one boring color with no design or door or hole or anything worth looking at. The only reason it had my interest now was because I couldn't move. My body ached with a pain I could only remember from Hydra. Not even Rogers' training sessions left me this sore. Electricity and I didn't get along. I almost thanked them for removing my left arm so it wouldn't be worse.

The guards sat outside the cell as they always did and laughed at something. It could be me, my misery, a joke, a story, or anything really. They weren't the most intelligent so they most likely found a squeaky door the most hilarious thing in existence.

A loud bang and several footsteps running in the room interrupted my thoughts. I couldn't find it in me to move around so I could only rely on my hearing to get me through what was going on.

I heard the guards get up while yelling, then a couple thuds followed by two even heavier thuds, then I heard the door to my cell open, and finally I heard a voice call out, "Rey!" The person came closer quickly and I barely saw a black shoe before the person kneeled down in front of me. "Rey oh my god are you okay? Well of course you're not okay I've heard...everything."

The person sat me up against the closest wall and I saw that it was Wanda, who was no longer wearing the jacket and collar she was forced into when we got here. Instead she was wearing a get-up similar to the other 'normal' prisoners. Speaking of, I looked around and behind her and saw Sam, Clint, Scott (learned his name when I heard a guard call him that), and Rogers. They were all still in their prison garb with the exception of Rogers, who was wearing some super casual stuff.

"Okay we need to get you out of this jacket and collar. There are some clothes we can change into on the jet but we need to get out of here, alright?" Wanda ranted as she started to use her powers to work on getting the jacket undone. It came off easily and she gasped when she noticed I was missing an arm.

The silence that overcame the group was deafening. I heard someone shuffle a bit before Sam spoke up. "They took your arm?" he asked in disbelief.

I nodded. "In a way I should thank them. I don't think I could imagine how much worse this would all be if a part of my body was a conductor for electricity," I mumbled out. Wanda held sympathy in her eyes as she started to take off the shock collar. She swore a couple times when is gave her a small shock but ultimately got it off, throwing it across the room once she could.

"Steve is getting us out of here," she whispered to me and helped me up to my feet. The power dampening cuff was still on my wrist but we could deal with that later. Right now it was about following Rogers and not falling over from my lack of energy.

Our group quietly hurried through the Rift and made it to where Rogers had landed the stolen jet. It was open and I could barely make out one Bucky Barnes standing right inside with a gun keeping watch. He looked over and saw us and went to the front to start getting it ready. At this point we'd be able to take out anyone who tried to cross us. And by we I mean them because I would probably just pass out on the floor if Sam and Wanda let go of me.

Clint was the last one on the jet and it started to close as soon as he was all the way inside. I was a carefully placed down on a seat while Rogers and Barnes worked to get the jet up and running. Wanda sat next to me. It felt as though she wanted to hug me, console me, act like she used to. I wanted to as well. I wanted everything to back to how it was before all this Accords mess.

It was only when the jet lifted off that Wanda started to talk. "Look, I don't really know what to say other than I'm sorry for fighting you back at the airport...I guess I was just consumed with anger and couldn't find the sane part of me that didn't want to hurt you and I hurt you and- well we kind of hurt each other but I know you were just trying to follow the Accords and this is all really hard and-"

"Wanda," I said, cutting her rant off. "I'm sorry too." Tears formed in her eyes and mine, and we finally felt free from the stupid shit that happened at the airport. I yawned slightly and my head started to fall over.

A hand was placed on my arm and I looked at Wanda. "Do you want to sleep for a bit?" she asked, knowing that with her powers my sleep would be peaceful. I nodded and closed my eyes. I felt a hand placed on my forehead and then slowly faded into a peaceful nap.

~~

Wanda removed her hand from Rey's forehead and felt her drift into sleep. She had her head rolled to the side and on Wanda's shoulder, who didn't mind, and her arm was limp in her own lap. Wanda decided that she'd sit there the whole time so she wouldn't disturb, and leaned her own head back.

The jet was extremely quiet. Nobody dared to talk to each other. Bucky and Steve were still at the front of the jet, whispered about something between the two of them. Wanda shut her eyes and concentrated on getting into Steve's head so she could hear the conversation.

"Alright, so I've sent a message on to T'Challa. So far it seems he's okay with our arrival."

"Even me?"

"Yes, Buck, even you. The whole thing was explained to him and he realizes that you didn't bomb shit." So Barnes was innocent after all... and Steve can actually swear... interesting revelations.

"What about Silva?"

It was silent for long enough that Wanda opened her eyes to make sure both men were still alive. Once she confirmed she closed her eyes again and concentrated. "Well, I didn't exactly ask about her."

Wanda was ready to jump up from her seat and verbally harass that man, and only stopped when she heard Barnes speak again. "Come on Steve, she deserves a safe place too. What were you expecting to happen with her?"

"Well I didn't entirely expect her to be joining us since I didn't know she was arrested as well." It was quiet, then Steve sighed. "I'll forward another message and ask."

It was quiet again and Wanda decided to get out of Steve's head. She was glad she'd be able to have more time with Rey. They were dropping Clint and Scott off at their homes (they both had families and decided to take parole or the like to make it easier on all of them) and then the rest of the group would be heading to Wakanda. There were whispers that Nat would be joining them as well. The rest of Iron Man's team was on the right side of the law so she didn't count on seeing any of them (other than the King).

She felt her shoulders sink slightly at the thought of Vision. What he did was painful, but it didn't compare to what she did to him. Of course she felt horrible about it, but it was time she got off her sorry ass and do something. She fully believed in what she had told him too: Wanda may not be able to control how others saw her, how they felt about her, but she could control her own feelings. What she did felt right but seeing the betrayal on Vision's face before shoving him into the ground haunted her.

Wanda shook her head and stopped thinking about all of this. Her new life was starting and it had to start on a new page. All she could count on for certain was that she'd be alone, so that's what she had to prepare for. Sure it's be amazing to see Vis again but that was not something she could count on.

The jet was flying smoothly through the air, so Wanda thought she could catch a few Z's herself. She cleared out her thoughts and set about taking a nap alongside Rey.

A/N: Sorry, I know it's short, but this info needed to be in the book and it didn't really fit with another chapter.

There is one more chapter in the actual book before it moves to the second book, but I will add a few extras after the last chapter here (because I can :) )
