Chapter Nine
Wanda had made me pass out for the flight home, giving me a chance to rest. At least, that's what she told me. I had my suspicions she made me sleep so I didn't have to deal with the Avengers and their comments and stares. It was given that they knew about my powers. It would impossible for them not to. At least with her using her powers, I was blocked off from my nightmares for the time being.
I don't know how I made it into my room, but when my eyes opened I was there. I came to the conclusion she used her powers and sat up a bit, and immediately went back down at the killer headache I had. Honestly, it had been so long since I had been the Soldier I forgot about the 'hangover' I got from it.
Speaking was also off the table, so I opted to just lay in bed until Wanda or someone came to check in on me. That wasn't long. There was a light knock on the door before it started to open, and in came Wanda with Sam trailing behind her.
"Oh good, your awake," Wanda said. She let out a sigh and smiled slightly. It was the kind that someone gave you after you just learned your parents died and you had fallen into depression. Basically, it was a smile I didn't want right now. "You slept for quite a while. For you it's tomorrow. I guess that's a good way to say it? But it's a new day."
I tried to speak but Sam beat me to it. "We need to take you to Doctor Banner's lab to make sure you're alright. It's routine to get checked out after every battle, in case adrenaline blocked out pain from something." I let out a noise of agreement and went to stand up.
Bad idea. I was lightheaded and my knees fell out from under me. "Oh no," Wanda said surprised. At about the same time, Sam let out a, "Going down!" Sam was the one who caught me before I could land fully on the ground.
"I might be a bit lightheaded," I said. Wanda shook her head with a 'duh' expression and Sam laughed. "On that note, walking might be a bit difficult."
"I gotcha," Sam said, and picked me up with my legs over on arm and my back supported in the other. We walked out of my room into the brightly lit hallway. This further angered my head, so I buried it into Sam's chest and held my arm over my face. This was also helpful in avoiding people on the way to Bruce.
At least three people stopped us in the hallway: Captain Rogers, who wanted to know what the hell we were doing, when Sam just said he and Wanda were taking me to the medical bay for a post-mission look over.
Nat. She asked why Sam was carrying me, and more about if I was okay. Wanda explained how I was lightheaded and had a really tough time walking. When Nat asked about why my head was hidden, I kind of tried to explain that the bright lights were, well, bright. However, it all came out muffled and Sam had to translate for me.
Our final stopper was Mr. Stark. I braced myself for the worst of it, but he merely asked Wanda how I was doing. She gave the same spiel, and Mr. Stark pulled her off to the side and they talked in hushed tones for a bit. He finally walked away and we made it to the medical lab.
"Ah you're awake!" Bruce said. I went to lift my head, but the lights were still very bright. Wanda said something about the lights, and Bruce had then dimmed. Now I was able to lift my head up and look around the room. There were other doctors milling about, mostly just fixated on their own projects. A couple were setting up a space for me. Bruce was setting something else up and then walked back over. "Sam, could you put her down on that chair?"
Sam nodded, walked to the chair, and gently put me down in it. I smiled at him and mumbled a small 'thanks'. A couple doctors came over to me, and soon I was surrounded by people trying to stick things in my arm.
Flashes ripped through my head. White masks. Bloody hands. One arm. My energy pulsed and Wanda must've felt it. "Guys, give her some space." She pushed doctors aside and made then stay back, and only one by one were they allowed to approach me and do what they needed to do. I thanked Wanda and she shrugged it off. "It was easy to tell you were stressed. They should've realized; I only helped them realize."
"Okay Rey, if it's alright with you, I just want to talk one-on-one with you. All the other doctors will leave the space and some translucent walls will come down to give us privacy, but not complete shut out, okay? Sam and/or Wanda can stay if you want." I thought for a second and asked if they could step out. I was worried I would hurt Wanda's feelings, but she told me it wasn't a big deal and that she understood people want privacy.
"What do you want to talk about?" I asked once the walls met the floor. Bruce pulled out a blank notepad and a pen, and sat down on a chair across from me.
"To start, I just want to know some basic things about your powers, like after affects and what they could do to you that would need treatment," he said, and clicked his pen.
The question threw me off for a moment. I wasn't getting attacked because of the fact I kept my powers a secret? I was actually being...respected? He seemed genuinely concerned with my wellbeing, and that may just be a trait of a doctor, but I liked it nonetheless.
"Well, to start, I usually get knocked out right after a lot of intense use of my powers. When I wake up from that, a sort of hangover type thing happens. Bright lights, loud noises, and moving too much cause my head to pound really hard, and cause a lot of pain. I don't really get any other affects other than that."
"What about if they hurt you?" The question was a bit confusing, but I felt I understood what he wanted to know: if my powers turn on me, what can they do to save me?
It took me a few moments to really come up with an answer, and finally I got to the best conclusion I could. "I don't really know...it's never really happened before. The closest I've gotten is after a mission my magic worked on its own it seemed. Hydra simply put me back in the memory wipe machine and that seemed to do the trick."
Bruce nodded and jotted everything I was saying down on his notepad. "Thank you! I can't really think about anything to ask right now, but if I do I'll find you or get FRIDAY to alert you to come down here." I nodded and Bruce pressed a button, lowering the walls down and bringing us back to the normal world. Wanda and Sam were waiting but the doorway, and waved over at us. I waved back and smiled like a...dang it I can't think of the word.
"Everything is good," I said, already knowing the question that'd be coming. Wanda nodded, and I tried to stand up. Sam was by my side in an instant yet I waved him off. "I think I can do it."
Carefully and slowly I stood up, with Sam still holding his hand out just in case I needed it. I tried my best and managed to get standing up with out any help. When it came to the walking part, I accepted help from Sam. "Don't worry, I'm here to help," he said. It was weird, but I felt like I had some positive connection with Sam. He felt like a sort of older (or younger, I guess) brother to me, and it was a very nice relationship; it was one I hadn't had in a long time.
On the way back to my room, we ignored as many people as we could. Nat was a bit persistent in making sure I was good, and Mr. Stark wanted to 'check in'. I honestly still don't know why he cares so much. Wanda took care of the talking with Mr. Stark, and he pretty much dragged her over to a completely different side of the room. So, Sam and I talked.
"So...you seem pretty chill," Sam said.
"Is that a good thing?" I asked him back. He took a moment to think things over and had a visible thing pop up in his head.
"Sorry, I forget that you aren't as caught up on lingo either. Being chill is a good thing. Basically you're the opposite of Steve, or the Uptight Captain man over there," Sam said, not very subtly nodding his head over to Captain Rogers at a table working. I stifled a bit of a laugh as Sam continued. "We'll really have to just plan a day so I can get you caught up on everything."
Out of nowhere, Agent Lambert popped up beside Sam. "That day will have to be cleared by the Director and accompanied by me, just letting you know," he said. Sam glared at him for a moment before turning back to me.
"So yeah, big group gathering it seems," he said. Even though he was annoyed with the sudden interruption, I couldn't stop a laugh from escaping my mouth. Sam joined me in laughing and we just stood there and laughed for a second. When Wanda came back, she wasn't smiling.
"Hey guys, Director Fury wants to talk with Rey and Tony." My face paled and my legs buckled, and Sam had to catch me before I completely fell to the floor. "It was the Director's request. He also made it very clear that no one other than the specified people can come."
I nodded slowly, processing all the words for a moment. This was it. The director knew about my powers, and I was getting thrown back to the wolves or into a dark cell for the rest of my life. I'd honestly rather die, but clearly I don't get a say in anything.
Sam walked me down behind Mr. Stark and Wanda left to go train with Nat; it was their scheduled time, and I assured her I'd be ok. However, I wasn't so sure I would be. Mr. Stark was quiet the whole walk there; he didn't utter a single word.
By the time we got to the meeting room, my brain willed me not to let go of Sam or at least beg for him to join. Mr. Stark still hadn't said a word to either of us. I was starting to panic at the silence and just wanted someone to say something.
It was almost as if Sam read my mind. "Why does the Director need to speak with just you and Rey?" he asked Mr. Stark. "I'd like to know what Rey is about to get into."
Mr. Stark shrugged. "I'm not entirely sure. He called for us both and that's all I know," he said. There were some subtle signs I picked up that let me know he wasn't lying, like all the basic things a normal person could pick up on and the fact that I couldn't hear his heart rate speed up at all.
After the longest walk to the room we were meeting in, we actually got there. It was located in the center of the building, meaning there weren't any windows. Maybe I was overthinking everything, but at the same time maybe Director Fury chose this room to meet in so I didn't have any escape plans.
Mr. Stark went up and knocked on the door, then a beat later an agent opened it up. It was babysitter, Agent Lambert. He must've been informed about the meeting first and was there to watch me. Reluctantly, I followed Mr. Stark into the room and left Sam behind. He gave me a small smile, which I returned, and the door closed.
Director Fury was already seated at the head of the conference table. Mr. Stark went and sat to his right, and I went to sit at the furthest possible seat away from either of them. "The seat up there is for you," Agent Lambert said to me when I went to sit down. I looked and excepted the inevitable: I had to face Director Fury.
I sat down at the seat to Fury's left and kept my gaze towards the table in front of me. The stares' of everyone else in the room were on me, but I didn't dare move my eyes. "So, you probably want to know why you two were called in here."
"Yeah, that'd be nice to know," Mr. Stark sassed. The way he spoke to the Director shocked me, and I actually looked up at him to see if he was serious. "I was kind of in the middle of some stuff in the lab, Eyepatch, so you're right in wondering if we want to know why we're here."
Director Fury looked at me to get my take on his statement. "Um- y-yes I'd like to-to know why I'm here please," I said. Every word came out rushed and stuttered; much less suave compared to Mr. Stark across from me.
"Well, then I might as well tell you. After the last mission you all went on, something was brought to my attention about you, Miss Silva. Apparently you have not only a metal arm, but powers you kept hidden from us." Director Fury stood to pace around, with his hands clasped behind his back. I gulped and started to panic. So he found out, or someone told him. Either way I was done for here. "Did you think about what we would interpret from that?" he asked me.
I had no idea if he wanted a response, but I gave him one anyways. When I spoke, it was barely above whisper volume. "I was scared. When I first met everyone I was already on your bad side because of my past with Hydra. Then everything happened and I was afraid you would lock me up and cage me like an animal like what Hydra did to me. Sure I deserved- deserve it but the thought was still terrifying."
Director Fury nodded as he walked around. "So nobody knew? Well then how do we know you weren't going to use these powers on us when we finally got swayed to your side?" Now he was trying to put thoughts in my head and words in my mouth. Well, after my terrible life with Hydra, I knew not to fall for their manipulative tactics.
"I did tell someone. I told Wanda. She was the only person I could trust and the only person who I knew would understand. I told her after the mission I was brought on and left in the wide open jet. You left me like a deer in the middle of a pride. When someone came and tried to kill me, all I could do while being restrained was use my powers to kill him. I had never...hurt someone in my right mind..." I trailed off while remembering the horrible things I felt after murdering someone.
"Wanda is the only person here who gave me a chance and who has any sort of shared life experience," I said. I was very worried that Director Fury would chew Wanda out but then I knew that she'd defend me no matter what.
Mr. Stark hadn't spoken in a while, opting to look at the table now. It was a very interesting table...
"Alright, you know, I'm feeling a bit generous today," Director Fury said. Those words felt strange coming from his mouth, but I didn't dare say anything about it. "I am going to give you a chance. The smallest of chances, but one nonetheless. You have to train everyday based on a schedule Rogers comes up with, and you get to stay on the team. Agent Lambert is staying with you at all times, and the only time he won't be with you is when you're in your room or unless another Avenger relieves him. I don't want any funny business. Missions are a no until further notice. You will follow these instructions to a T unless you want to meet with me again," the Director said. "Is this all clear?" he asked me.
I nodded excitedly. "Yes sir." He dismissed me and I left the room with speed. As I was going out the door, I heard the Director say something to Mr. Stark about wanting him to stay. It didn't have to do with me however, so I kept going. Agent Lambert of course followed me out.
When I closed the door and turned around, I saw Nat sitting on the wall across from the room. She looked up and saw me, and a smile spread on both of our faces. "Hey Rey. You seem pretty happy for someone who just had a meeting with Nick. What happened?"
"I can stay!" I exclaimed (really loudly; oops). Nat brought me in for a hug, and it felt off at first, but I relaxed and hugged back. "There are some rules but I can stay here!" I felt Nat tighter then hug before letting go.
"Well I know some people who'd love to know this great news," she said. We walked together down the hall back to wherever everyone was. Agent Lambert stayed behind us, but was still very present. The walk felt long, but not as long as the one on the way.
The two of us walked into what I recognized as the little gathering area the Avengers loved to just hang out in. Wanda was pacing around a bit while biting her nails, Sam was sitting on a chair thinking, and Captain Rogers was also there it seemed.
Wanda saw us first, and came hurrying over. "Oh my goodness you're back in one piece! And you're not in tears! These are good signs, right?" she asked. Sam came over as well, and I could sort of see Captain Rogers getting a bit intrigued at my response.
"I can stay," I said, smiling widely. Wanda cheered along with Sam, and brought us into a sort of group hug. When she let go I talked a bit more about the conditions I had to follow, briefly bringing up the fact that I had to follow a training schedule that the Captain comes up with. At that I finally got his attention enough to where he joined in on the conversation.
He stood up and set down whatever he was working on. "So I have to come up with your entire training schedule? Yours?" he asked. The Captain sounded a bit annoyed and I knew he really didn't feel like doing this. I gave a small shrug, unsure of how I could really respond.
"Take it up with Fury if you don't like it," Wanda said simply. He sighed and walked away to, I could only assume, talk to the Director about it.
