Chapter 7

A few nights later, Nia finds a note on her bed. 10시에 지붕에서 만나 (Meet me on the roof at 10), it says in Korean. She smiles and pulls a black sweatshirt on over her t-shirt and pulls on her boots. Her watch said five till so she silently snuck upstairs. Jun hadn't spoken to her since the day Loki came and she was hopeful that they could at least go back to talking. She tiptoed past Matt's room, praying he wouldn't notice, and up the last flight of steps to the roof. Jun was sitting on the edge, feet dangling over. Nia's eyes go wide as she rushes over, slowing as she gets close, speaking softly. "Jun?"

Jun turns, smiling and motions for her to sit next to him. She does so, looking down at the cars and people far below them.

"Wow," she says softly.

Jun gently wraps an arm around her, pulling her close. "Beautiful, is it not?"

Nia smiles, leaning against him. "Very." They sit in silence for a while, watching the activity die down.

"Well, I tried leaving you be, doing what he told us to....." Jun says softly. "But all it showed me was how much I love you."

Nia chuckles. "That sounded corny. But I agree."

Jun smiles and stands, helping Nia up also and hugging her tightly. Nia returns the hug, looking up at him. Jun smiles and kisses her. Nia leans into him, very happy for the first time in a very, very, long time. Jun pulls back and takes her left hand in his, slipping something onto it. Nia looks down and gasps at the gold band around her finger, looking back up quickly.

"You won't be able to wear it there, but, will you marry me?"

Nia's eyes go wide. "I'm sixteen... and we aren't even supposed to be together...."

"No one has to know," Jun says softly.

Nia shakes her head. "Loki plays with minds, he would know instantly."

Jun nods a bit. "I know, but if you keep it out of your mind when he is around..."

Nia slips the ring off her finger, fiddling with it as her mind roars opposing beliefs at her. She looks down, unable to look at Jun, unsure of what to do or say.

"Nia, please, I know you feel the same way I do..." Jun says softly.

Leanne nods, then shakes her head then sighs, tears coming to her eyes. "I don't know! I don't want to put us in danger, you in danger. He'll do less to me than to you."

Jun nods. "I'm willing to take that risk."

"Really?"

"Really."

Nia nods fiddling with the ring more. "Then...... yes," she says smiling slightly. She slips the ring on then off her finger and Jun slips the chain off her neck as if reading her mind. She drops the ring next to her mother's and smiles as Jun put the chain back on her.

"I love you," he whispers.

"I love you too," she says quietly as they embrace.

Nia and Jun quickly become the stars of the Wolves. Jun became known as Phantom because of his powers and Nia, Kestral for her amazing tricks and stunts but small size and deadly accuracy. Matt's beatings continued, but Jun stopped them when possible. Both were careful not to show their affections in public though, lest there be a spy or Loki himself appeared.

One evening while together on the roof, they heard police cars pull up. Both froze, looking at each other then quickly pulling their scattered things together before Jun grabs Nia's hand, turning them both invisible, they sneak down to their rooms as they hear the crash of the police searching the place, they both gather their things and Jun leads Nia out, careful not to let go of her hand lest she appears and flags their presence. They watch from outside as all but Matt and Charlie, who had been too preoccupied to notice the officers' presence disappeared in various directions into the night. Matt and Charlie were loaded into a police car and driven away.

"I guess we should rescue them," Jun says a bit reluctantly.

"Nuh-uh, good luck, but there is no way, no how I'll rescue him," Nia spits out the last word angrily the most recent pain on her back all too fresh.

Jun sighs. "Nia, please, I hate him too but it's the right thing."

Nia rolls her eyes. "Fine. But I still hate him."

"Fine with me," Jun chuckles and hands Nia her skateboard and gets on his own. They both appear and skate down the dark street after the police car. Nia had been out at night before, but not many times, and only recently had she and Jun been spending the nights on the roof, and those had all been sleepless, for her at least. The dark still haunted her. There was fog to that night making the dark more pressing and almost able to be felt as well as blocking out the street lights. Nia shivers. The fog and darkness press in on her, getting tighter and tighter until it was all she could feel. She stops her skateboard and shuts her eyes tightly.

"Nia?" Jun says softly, stopping also and going up to her, putting his hands on her shoulders and looking at her concernedly.

"I... I'm okay. I just don't like the dark," Nia says, her eyes staying shut tight.

"I know, it's okay, but you have to be brave. That car is only getting further away, we need to hurry. Can you do this? Or do we need to find somewhere to lay low?"

Leanne hesitates, unsure of what to do. She finally shakes her head. "I can't. Not at night," she says shakily, her eyes remaining closed.

Jun sighs and nods, picking up both skateboards and taking her hand. "Just follow me, stay calm, okay?"

Leanne nods, gripping his hand tightly, too afraid to open her eyes, The further they go, the more bated her breath becomes, and the harder she grips Jun's hand. He knows all the police will be searching the safe houses, but he knows he has to get Nia somewhere bright and at least sort of safe. He finally finds one and leads her in. The elderly lady shoos them quickly to the basement and shows them an empty room. Jun nods in thanks and quickly sits Leanne on the bed, tosing their boards and backpacks aside.

"Nia, open your eyes, look at me, we're safe, it's light, see?" Jun pleads with her, trying to prevent a full-blown panic attack.

Leanne slowly opens her eyes, her breathing slowing to its regular pace. After a minute or so she sighs. "I'm sorry, that was stupid. It's a child's fear." She looks down, shaking her head.

Jun gently lifts her chin, careful of the bruises Matt had left there. "No, it's not. I had to find the same thing out about my own. Fears aren't childish, we often have good reasons for them." He sits gently on the bed next to her. "You know my fear of fire," Jun begins.

"Because you were in one that killed your family and almost you," says Nia, a bit bitterly. "I have no reason to be afraid of the dark."

Jun sighs. "Either way, it's a fear, and while getting over it should be a goal, right now, you can't call yourself stupid or childish. It takes a long time to get over fears, and while we do, we deal with them the best we can."

Nia sighs and nods, leaning against him tiredly. Jun pulls his boots off and hers also, laying down. Nia lays down next to him.

"Can we sleep with the lights on?" she asks quietly. Jun nods and they both drift off to sleep.

Nia wakes before Jun the next morning, smiling a bit as she feels his arms around her. She carefully slips from his embrace and kisses his forehead before changing her clothes and pulling on her boots. She frowns at her messy curls in the mirror, pulling her hair into a bun. She leaves the room silently, going to see what she could get for breakfast. The old lady from the night before is standing at the stove, cooking something that smelled delicious.

"Excuse me..." Nia says cautiously.

The lady jumps a bit and turns, smiling when she sees Nia. "I'm just finishing the food," she says as she turns back to what Nia has now decided was waffles and bacon. "You have a good boy there, he was up a good bit of the night worrying over you."

Nia nods looking down. "Yeah, he's a good friend," she says, not willing to give the secret to anyone who could even accidentally pass it on. The woman nods knowingly and makes two plates.

"How much do we owe you?" Nia asks as she takes the plates.

"Nothing," the woman replied. "This is a safe house, I ask no fee."

"Thank you," Nia says quietly, taking the plates back to the room. "Oh!" She says, closing the door again, seeing that Jun is up and changing.

Jun quickly finishes and opens the door. "Sorry, didn't know how long you'd be," he says, smiling at the sight of the food.

"It's fine," Nia replies, handing him one of the plates. They sit and eat in silence, except for Nia's tic.

"You know," Jun says as he finishes. "We could just stay out here, by ourselves. We've got what we need."

"But we are Loki's best fighters, if we disappeared we would not go unsearched for, he'd search high and low for us," Nia replies. Both sigh and pack their things, returning the plates to the kind elderly lady with more thanks and go to find the rest of the Wolves. They pass a house with the news blaring and Nia stops.

"Listen," she says. Jun stops and listens.

"Two members of the famous gang, The Wolves, were captured last night," says the newsman. "Today they will be held on trial at City Hall for a number of crimes. They will have a police escort. According to the chief of police, all of the Wolves are welcome to come to the trial, but will also be prosecuted duly."

"I believe we have a police escort to stop," Jun says with a smile.

Nia frowns. "It's a trap."

"I know," Jun says with a twinkle in his eyes. "Let's go spring it."

They hear the escort before they see it, smiling to each other as they go. They step around the corner to see three cars.

"That's it?" Nia asks in disbelief.

"Less likely for us to get shot, so that's a plus," Jun says with a shrug.

"So, what's the plan?" Nia asks as the cars get closer.

"Well, you distract the cars and I'll grab Matt and C," Jun says, setting his things down then disappearing. Nia pulls a small pistol from her backpack and slides it into the inside pocket of her jacket, flipping the knife in her boot up into her hand and stepping onto her skateboard.

"Now," Jun says.

Nia bursts from the alley in front of the cars, headed straight for the first one, just as she comes up to it she leaps off the skateboard and lets it continue under the car. She runs up the front of the police car, pulling out a gun for each hand, one from her belt and the other from her jacket, shooting out the tires of the two cars following it. She flips back off the car and onto her skateboard, the whole thing happening in only a few seconds. The three cars screech to a halt. Nia smiles a bit as she picks up more speed, flipping the board around and shooting out the tires of the first car. She hears a car door opening and turns, shooting the officer before the door is even fully open. She stares the other officers down, daring them to leave their bulletproof cars. All of them knowing she's a quicker shot than any of them. She hears gunshots behind her and turns to see the officers in the front seat of the car with Matt and Charlie dead and the gang members gone. She turns and rides away quickly. Jun is waiting in the alley with Matt and Charlie.

"Th-thanks," Matt says gruffly. Charlie smiles and nods.

"You are very welcome," Nia replies curtly as she packs her things. The sirens could be heard again and the four quickly were on the move to where they had planned their next hideout to be.
