Chapter 15
Two days later, JJ was asleep and Leanne had taken the time to re-organize her backpack. She pulled out the sweatshirt she had taken from the pile of Juns things and pulled it on. Then she arranged her things. Jun's journal with the rose pressed in it on the bottom with the folder of physical research she had done on the Avengers on top of that. Her tablet, technically not hers as she had never really paid for it, came next. Then her two changes of clothes that she kept in her backpack for when they moved quickly. Her hygiene items and phone went on top. Her electronics had been disabled when Stark had found them, but she hoped that if they decided they could trust her, she could use them again and write down all the information she had found out in the past few days. She had just put the backpack back on the floor when the Avengers, plus Mary and minus Tony Stark, came into her room. Her heart leapt to her throat and she did her best to keep her tics in check.
Steve smiles at her and holds something out. "Welcome to the team," he says, a big smile covering his face.
Leanne's eyes grow wide and she shakily takes the thing from Steve. It's a patch. An Avengers patch. "Thank you," she says breathlessly, a smile breaking over her face. "Thank you so much."
"We can add the patch to your suit, once you have gone through training and are well enough to fight with us," Clint says with a smile. "Stark isn't thrilled, but he'll get over it."
"I get my own suit?" Leanne asks, surprised.
"Of course," Dr. Banner says. "Once you are well enough, we will test your powers and make you a suit accordingly.
"What you did was very amazing, Lady Leanne," Thor says with a smile.
"Please, call me Nia," Leanne says to the team. "It's what my friends call me."
"Of course, Lady Nia," Thor says with a sparkle in his eyes.
Nia chuckles and smiles at the group.
Mary smiles, leaning into her brother. "Nothing is official until you're past your trial stage, Nick will also need to be notified," she says. "But we wanted to make you feel like we wanted you here, despite certain roadblocks," she states with a small smile. "So you're an Avenger in training for the time being. Like Becca is."
"Thanks, I'm ready and raring to go whenever Mary and Dr. Banner clear me," Nia says with a chuckle.
"You'll have to wait a little longer," Bruce says with a small smile.
Mary chuckles. "It'll be awhile before you can do anything strenuous," she reminds Leanne. "C-Sections take several weeks to recover from."
Nia frowns. "I've been shot, stabbed, and many other things and been fighting the next day."
"This is different, Nia," Natsha says softly.
"How?" Nia says, frustrated.
"You were literally cut into and had a baby taken out of you," Mary states matter-of-factly. "Being shot or stabbed should've put you out for at least a few days, but you weren't properly taken care of then either," she states, crossing her arms. "You're like us, Leanne. Human. Steve is different, that's why he heals faster than we do, same with Thor," she explains. "It's learning your limits."
"My limits are much higher than most," she says. "I feel fine."
Clint chuckles. "You are stubborn, aren't you."
Nia shrugs. "Yeah, I guess."
"Stubbornness isn't always a good thing, especially when you're healing from a drastic surgery," Mary points out. "Just take it slow for now."
Nia sighs. "Fine."
"It will be boring, but it's for the best," Banner says. "Plus, it gives you time to be with JJ."
Mary nods in agreement with Bruce. "Take advice from the doctors, okay?" she asks teasingly but also serious.
Nia nods reluctantly. "Okay."
About a week later, the two doctors finally let her out of bed. Nia slowly sits and swings her feet over the side of the bed, standing slowly and grinning as she stretches.
"Wow, it feels nice to be on my feet again," she says with a smile. She goes to take a step, but finds herself plastered against the wall. She pushes away from the wall and looks confused at the bed and two doctors across the room. "What... just happened?"
Bruce's eyes are wide. "Uh..."
Mary widens her eyes in shock. "You didn't have this ability before?" she asks Leanne.
Nia shakes her head. "No, I mean, I was a fast runner, but that..."
"Somehow, the electricity must have heightened your metabolism," Bruce says.
Leanne looks confused. "How?"
"I don't know, the same way you can control electricity," he says, throwing up his hands. "Mary, any idea?"
Mary looks over at Bruce then looks over at Leanne, she sits down in the chair behind her as she thinks. "It's possible that since you have electricity inside of you, you're able to control electricity outside your body. But the electricity within you needs to vent itself, and that's how you have super speed," she explains as best she can. "I can run tests if you'd like," she suggests to Leanne.
Leanne shakes her head. "No, that's okay... I've had enough doctor stuff done to me in the past week and a half. But... I do have a question. How? Dr. Banner, you said something about my DNA changing?"
Banner nods. "Yes, you see, when you were hit by the electricity, instead of hurting or killing you, it changed your DNA. You absorbed the electricity and now, it's running through you, kind of like your blood. Then we get to what Mary said."
Nia looks quite confused. She starts to the bed, walking very, very carefully so she doesn't end up speeding again and running into it, she sits with a sigh. "This is... so weird."
Mary chuckles. "Welcome to the world of weird," she states. "We're all experts in the field," she teases slightly. "About the electricity, Thor might be the best person to ask about that. He's literally the god of thunder and lightning," she reminds Leanne. "Electricity is just a form of lightning." She adds, then sighs. "As for the speed, there's no one I can think of for that. And I know a lot of people," she comments.
"That's okay, I think I can figure it out, I've always taught myself more than others have taught me," Nia replies.
"That might have been true then, but not anymore. You didn't have the god of thunder and lightning wanting to spar with you because your powers are similar back then, you do now. Don't be alone in this when you don't have to be," Mary reminds Leanne with a small smile.
"I don't exactly play well with others. The last person I was friends with..." she looks up suddenly. "Oh my gosh, I've forgotten all about Callida," Nia looks panicked, glancing quickly at JJ's bassinet. "I need to know if she's alive."
"Mary has lots of contacts in the medical field," Dr. Banner says reassuringly.
Mary nods in agreement with Bruce. "The name I can think of right off the top of my head might know, he has connections everywhere like I do," she says. "And he'll call anyone for me if I ask," she adds as she pulls out her phone, scrolling through her lists of contacts. "When was the last time you saw your friend?" she asks. "If we can narrow down when and where it'll help the search," she says to Leanne with a small smile. "We'll find her."
"I last saw her in the hospital, and it was the same day I came here. She's 22 and of African descent, and she's paralyzed from the waist down," Nia says, trying to be as helpful as possible.
Mary nods, as she presses on a number in her phone. "Steph," she quietly says into the phone. "I need a favor," she says, then tells the person on the other end of the phone what Nia had just told her and Bruce. A few minutes later she hangs up and looks back over at Leanne. "He'll be over with the files of your friend he has shortly," she says with a smile. "She was in one of his hospitals. His colleague helped her."
Nia looks relieved. "Oh thank goodness. Thank you."
Mary smiles, nodding. "He thought you'd want the files to know she was okay after his colleague treated her," she says.
Nia nods. "Yes, that would be good."
About a half an hour later there's a knock on Leanne's bedroom door. Mary opens it and smiles softly. "Hi, Steph," she greets her friend.
Stephen Strange smiles back at his mentor. "Mary," he says with his small smile he reserves for only her. Then looks over at the woman on the bed. "You must be Leanne," he assumes, holding the file in his hand as he extends his free hand in greeting. "Doctor Stephen Strange," he introduces himself.
"Good to meet you too. I, um, don't do the whole, touching thing. Sorry," Nia says, smiling apologetically.
Stephen shakes his head, pulling his hand away. "That's alright, I have patients that are the same, I'm used to it," he says, then holds out the file. "I believe my mentor called me to get this for you," he states, then looks back at Mary. "And you should be sitting, Winnie could come any day now," he states curtly to his mentor.
Mary waves at Stephen, dismissing what he said with her hand. "If I sit down I can't get back up. I'll be fine," she retorts. "And you're not here for me, you're here for Leanne," she quips back, smiling softly at the young woman. "Everything should be there about your friend until she left their care."
"Thank you," Nia says, taking the folders and flipping through them eagerly, but her face grows more and more concerned as she looks. "What did he do to her..." she whispers.
"She came into our care with severe injuries, but Christine did all she could and your friend was in recovery shortly thereafter," Stephen explains to Leanne. "She left us perhaps three days ago. We wanted her to stay at least a week or two more, but she insisted on leaving," he explains some more as she reads over the file.
"She was nowhere close to healed when she left, what happened?" Nia asks, concerned.
Stephen sighs, shrugging. "We don't know. She was able to leave clearly. But if that was for the best we don't know. She checked herself out without a word to anyone, Christine was scared that your friend would get into something worse but we couldn't do anything."
Nia groans, rubbing her hands over her face. "I have to find her," she says, glancing at JJ.
Mary nods. "We'll help in any way we can," she tells Leanne. "But where would we even start looking for her?" she asks.
"I know all the Wolves' hideouts, we could search them," Nia says, standing and starting to gather her things, hands moving in a blur.
"Nia, you need to calm down," Banner says, looking concerned. "You can't just leave, you have to stay with JJ."
"I'll bring him then," Nia says, still panicking.
Mary shakes her head. "You can't bring him with you. He's barely two weeks old," she reminds Leanne. "You can't rush into anything this severe. You yourself are still healing, you just walked for the first time today in two weeks," she states. "I know you want to find her, but you can't, not now."
Nia takes a deep breath and calms down, nodding. "I'm sorry. I'm used to things being different." JJ starts to cry and Nia picks him up, rocking him and humming softly, calming herself down also.
Mary watches Leanne, then thinks of a way to get her mind off the subject. She glances over at Bruce then looks back at Leanne. "My brother and the rest of the team are leaving soon for the last Hydra base. Tony expects that they'll find the scepter and finally be done with the bases so he's going to throw a party next week. I'm inviting you to join us," she says with a small smile.
Nia looks up, a bit interested. "That sounds fun, what do you guys do at your parties?"
Mary chuckles. "Tony is known for throwing parties so I'm sure he'll make it enjoyable. It's mostly just talking with friends and catching up. My godson always has an after party for those of us closer to him," she says. "I'm attending that. It's just us Avengers and our close allies," she adds. "I would normally attend the main party but Steve and Tony insisted I don't come until the after party because Winnie could come any day now."
"That sounds fun I'd be willing to go, as long as Stark won't throw a fit," Nia says with a slight frown.
Mary sighs, pinching the bridge of her nose. "I'm already his mother, don't make me act like I'm yours," she grumbles. "Tony will be fine, Leanne."
"You know he doesn't like me, I'm just trying to be careful. I don't want to provoke the predator," Nia says.
Mary rolls her eyes, sighing. "Don't always assume the worst from him. I know he doesn't like you, and it's clear you don't like him. But he's also hosting this party so he wouldn't try anything stupid," she points out. "Assuming things doesn't always end well," she states with a sigh.
Nia nods. "Sorry. I will come to the party. I just don't want trouble."
Mary nods in agreement, "No one wants trouble. This party is something he's been looking forward to hosting for a while, everyone will be there. And if it gets too much, then you can come with me to the after party."
Nia smiles. "Thanks, it sounds great."
Hi, Yall! This is a long chapter, so enjoy it! School has hit me hard so I won't be posting here much 'cause I can't write enough to post enough anymore. Hopefully breaks will give me more time to write. Thanks for reading!
