Chapter 12
Leanne awoke to soft humming. Her eyes fluttered open to see a red-haired woman, standing over a clear bassinet. She shifted her weight to see better and the woman turned. Leanne almost fainted in surprise when she saw who it was. Black Widow.
The woman stops humming and the already almost invisible smile on her face disappears. A doctor looks up from where he is working on a computer in the corner with a smile. "Your son is a fighter, Leanne," he says, as it dawns on her that this is the famous Dr. Banner. Leanne blinks a couple times, wondering if she had died and gone to Heaven. But no, the pain in her stomach was real.
"He... he's... alive...?" Leanne stutters out, shocked.
Dr. Banner nods. "Alive and healthy, although, he has a bit of scarring from when you were hit."
"But the nurse said....." she trails off. "May I see him?"
At a nod from Dr. Banner, Natasha rolls the bassinet over.
The baby was unmistakably hers and Jun's. He had her hair and skin, but his father's face. Tears came to Leanne's eyes. "But.... how? It's... impossible."
Dr. Banner smiles slightly. "As impossible as you now having powers?"
"I... what!?"
Natasha nods. "Why else would you still be here instead of at the hospital you came from?"
The girl shakes her head in amazement, but her eyes fall back onto her son. The left side of his face was torn up and scarred, and his ear was almost completely gone, his left hand also had significant damage, leaving only two fingers. Leanne was suddenly filled with rage. Loki had done this. He had hurt her son, her JJ. Natasha steps back, pulling the bassinet with her as Leanne's hands begin to spark and fizzle and the lights in the room start to dim.
Leanne freezes and the electricity stops flowing from her hands. "What.... happened?"
Dr. Banner hesitates. "We aren't sure. But our best bet is that your body somehow absorbed the electricity that you were knocked out with and it somehow changed your DNA to be able to absorb electrical energy and use it to your will. It's scientifically impossible.... But there's been a lot of that lately."
Leanne raises her eyebrows. "And you figured this out while I was sleeping?"
Dr. Banner nods.
"That's..... creepy."
Natasha smirks. "Yeah, just a bit."
Tony Stark then walks in and Leanne is even more sure she's dreaming. In a room, with three Avengers, with them not trying to kill her, but help her, and her son is alive, and on top of that she has super powers. How could it not be a dream?
Dr. Banner smiles softly at the confused girl. "It's alright, Leanne, there is nothing to be afraid of."
Tony Stark comes over and puts a pair of gloves on her hands. "There," he grumbles. "Now you can do stuff without electrocuting everything in your way."
Dr. Banner frowns at him. "It wasn't her fault she short circuited your arc reactor, she wasn't in control at the time."
Leanne looks a bit impressed. "I defeated the great Ironman while half unconscious?"
Natasha can't help but join Dr. Banner as he chuckles. "Yes," Natasha says.
Leanne nods a bit, looking slightly smug. "Cool."
"What will you name him?" Dr. Banner asks.
"Jun Young Junior, JJ for short. After his father."
"Any middle name?" the doctor asks.
Leanne thinks for a moment. "Yes, Inaam. It means..."
Natasha cuts her off. "Miracle, in Arabic."
Leanne smiles a bit. "Yes."
Dr. Banner writes the name down. "And his father?"
"Jun Young. But he is no longer alive," she says quietly.
Dr. Banner nods. "That is fine, we just need it for the birth certificate."
Leanne freezes. "No one can see that. No one can know he exists."
"What do you mean?" Dr. Banner asks.
"Loki will kill him."
Stark looks up quickly. "Loki?"
Leanne nods. "Yes, Loki."
"That's where I've seen you before, you and someone you called Jun fought Steve and me. You were one of his puppets," Natasha says.
Leane nods. "But, I'm not anymore. He killed Jun...." She stops, choking back tears. "He hurt me, and tried to kill JJ."
"How do we know she isn't lying to weasel her way in here for that trickster? And, I thought Thor had locked him up. This isn't sounding right. Loki can look like anyone, right? Why not a girl?" Stark says accusingly.
Banner frowns a bit. "She is most definitely a girl, she just had a baby mind you. And her body shows signs of much abuse. I have a feeling she isn't lying."
Natasha is silent.
Leanne sighs in relief. She at least has the doctor on her side. But then it occurs to her, what will that do? Won't they just turn her in to the police once she is well enough to be moved? Send her son to the exact system she ran from?
"What.... are you guys going to do with me?" She asks softly. "And JJ?"
Dr. Banner looks at Tony Stark. "We haven't decided yet. There are differing arguments."
Leanne nods. "Okay, but, can you promise me one thing?"
"What is it?" Dr. Banner asks.
"That JJ doesn't go into the foster system," Leanne says softly.
"Of course," Dr. Banner says with a smile. "Of course."
"Can.... I hold him?" Leanne asks, almost afraid to, lest she shock him with her newfound powers.
Dr. Banner nods. "Your new gloves will keep you from shocking him." He goes over and picks JJ up, gently placing him in Leanne's arms.
Leanne smiles, trembling a bit as she holds the tiny bundle in her arms. He was perfect. The perfect mix of her and Jun. And as cute as any baby she's seen, no, cuter. JJ's eyes open a bit and he looks up at her, taking her in.
"그래, 나야, 네 엄마," she says softly in his father's native tongue. (Yes, it's me, your mama.) JJ stares at her unblinkingly for a moment, then starts to cry. Leanne starts to panic.
"What did I do?" she asks quickly.
Dr. Banner comes over. "He's probably hungry, we've been giving him a bottle, but we can teach you to breastfeed too."
Leanne nods. "Yes, that would be good."
Dr. Banner motions for the others to leave. "You'll have to unbutton the front of your gown."
Leanne freezes, shaking her head. "No, no, I'm not going to do that."
Dr. Banner nods. "I understand. Would a female doctor be better? I know one that would be willing to help. You can give him a bottle for now, and I'll call her."
"Okay," she says softly.
Dr. Banner makes a bottle and hands it to her, showing her how to hold both JJ and the bottle and how to make him comfortable, then goes and calls Dr. Elizabeth Bryne.
Dr. Bryne arrived a few hours later, she hadn't been told much from Dr. Banner about what she was helping him with, only that he needed her help with one of his patients. She was more than happy to aid him in any way she could. When she stepped into the room, she was shocked to see a young woman lying in the bed in the room, holding a baby. She then knew what Bruce had called her in for. She lightly knocks on the door to signal her entrance, a small smile on her lips.
"Hi, I'm Doctor Elizabeth Bryne. Doctor Banner called me to help?" she introduces herself to the girl.
Leanne jumps a bit at the knock and turns. "Oh, um, hi." She holds JJ a bit tighter to her chest, watching the new woman carefully.
Elizabeth can see that the girl is wary of new people so she steps into the light more, letting the girl see her better. "I'm only here to help you," Elizabeth says to her, her hands resting on her own pregnant stomach. "I won't be much different from you in a few months." She chuckles. "What's your name? Bruce hasn't told me much."
"My name is Leanne, this is JJ," she says softly.
Dr. Banner steps into the hall, leaving Dr. Bryne to talk to the girl.
Elizabeth smiles. "Hi, JJ," she says quietly as she steps to the end of the bed, then looks back at Leanne. "It's nice to meet you," she adds. "How old is he?" She asks curiously.
"Two days. I think. I was asleep for most of it."
Elizabeth nods slowly, smiling at him. "He's a cutie," she whispers. "May I look him over? I'm sure Bruce has but I want to check everything for myself since he didn't tell me anything," she tells Leanne. "I was in my apartment when he called me asking to cash in a favor I owed," Elizabeth says with a chuckle.
Leanne nods a bit. "Dr. Banner thinks JJ might have some brain damage, because of what happened." She gently touches the left side of JJ's face, as if afraid to hurt him more. "But he couldn't get the other doctor out here. He hoped you could help with that too."
Elizabeth hesitates, but nods in understanding. "I'll help however I can," she says. "How do you know Bruce? He's been pretty reclusive for years, only recently becoming active again," She asks as she carefully takes JJ from Leanne, smiling as she bounces him gently to calm him down some. "I've missed holding babies," she whispers. "I'm excited for my own to join me," she adds as she lays JJ down in the bassinet beside Leanne's bed. She opens his blanket up as she pulls her stethoscope off of her shoulders and into her ears, checking his vitals over gently.
JJ starts to cry softly at the feel of the cold metal circle and Leanne watches protectively, purposely ignoring the question.
Elizabeth hums a lullaby, smiling as JJ seems to calm down enough for her to finish her check up, "There we go." She says with a smile, wrapping him back up in his blanket, "That was cold, wasn't it?" She talks to JJ before she gently hands him back to Leanne, "His heart is strong," she tells her. "He's a fighter."
Leanne smiles hugging JJ close. "Good, he takes after his father and I."
Elizabeth chuckles. "Mine takes after her Pa too much," she says with a laugh. "She's too strong for me with her kicks," she states as she moves around the bed over to the chair beside the bed, looking Leanne over a bit, trying her best to assess the girl in front of her. "I need to know a bit about you and your health to better know how to help you," she informs Leanne. "I know you're wary... I just want to help as best I can."
Leanne looks away. "I'm healthy. I made sure of that when I found out I was pregnant."
Elizabeth hesitates, sighing briefly. "I need more than that," She says to Leanne quietly, "I'm really glad you were healthy during the pregnancy though, for you and JJ," she tells her. "Any history about the women in your family? Types of birth run in families. Prematures or anything that can affect the mother after she's had the baby too," she explains as best she can for Leanne. "If you can't then that's fine though," she reassures her. "I had a hard time with my first pregnancy because I didn't know the history of the women of my family."
Leanne's jaw clenches and she carefully sets JJ in the bassinet and her hands start to flick back and forth, her "hm" noise becoming louder and more frequent. "My mother died when I was 15. She never told me anything about her family. Something bad happened and it drove her away from them. And my father's is irrelevant as I obviously was to him," she winces as her hand moves awkwardly.
Elizabeth nods slowly, taking in the information she was given. "I'm sorry about your Ma," she says quietly. "My Ma passed away when I was 16. My Pa passed when I was 3. Only my brother knows about him," she says. "She told me some things about her family, but not much, she immigrated from Ireland when she and my Pa were first married." She explains as best she can without giving too much away, hoping to connect on some level with Leanne.
Leanne nods a bit, she looks helpless as JJ begins to cry, attempting for a moment to hold back her tics so she can pick him up but has to let go, she grabs a pen from the bedside table and throws it across the room. She blushes deeply and turns away from Elizabeth, embarrassed and afraid of being punished.
The Doctor smiles softly. "You have Tourettes," she says as she watches Leanne for a moment. "There's nothing wrong with that," she tells her with a small smile. "He's probably hungry, or just wants to be held. The cries can sound similar at first, but you'll eventually tell the difference with time," she explains as she stands from her seat beside the bed. "Do you mind if I hold him until your tics calm down?" She asks, genuinely wanting to help Leanne.
Leanne hesitates, trying to calm herself, but nods. "He's hungry. It's time."
Elizabeth nods, walking around the bed and lifting JJ into her arms gently. She then turns to look over at Leanne. "Have you breastfed him at all?" she asks. "Or is that why I'm here actually?" She chuckles softly. "Bruce has always been nervous around women when it comes to things like this," she teases her friend.
Leanne shakes her head. "No, it was me who refused. I couldn't.... not after......." she falls silent, her eyes fluttering shut as she takes a deep breath.
Elizabeth hesitates, she doesn't want to press Leanne further, the young woman was already not easily trusting and she didn't want to throw away the progress she had made already. "That's alright," she states. "I won't press you, just breathe," Elizabeth says, her hazel eyes watching the woman carefully. "No one's going to hurt you, I can promise you that," she tells Leanne as she holds JJ out for his mom. "If any of the Avengers give you a hard time or cause you any trouble, just send them to me, I'll deal with them," she states, smiling at her.
Leanne takes JJ and hugs him to her chest, calming considerably with him back in her arms. "Thanks." She can tell the doctor has no bad intentions, and wants to tell her what happened, but isn't sure she can.
Elizabeth smiles at Leanne, changing back to the original subject. "It might take some getting used to when he latches on," she says as she helps adjust JJ carefully. "It was uncomfortable for me when I first was doing it," she explains. "But eventually it should not hurt too bad," she tells Leanne with a small smile.
Leanne hesitates. "I...... I don't want you to see.... me. I...."
Elizabeth nods. "That's not a problem," she states. "I'll pull the curtain around your bed," she says as she moves around the bed and grabs onto the curtain, pulling it around Leanne's bed. "But if you need help, that's why I'm here," she reassures the young woman.
Leanne unbutton her shirt and lets JJ latch on, she inhales sharply at the feeling, not liking it very much, but lets him figure it out.
Elizabeth sits down in a chair as she waits for Leanne to call her if she needs help, she pulls out her phone, seeing a text from her brother and chuckling at his question before responding. She looks back up at the curtain after a few minutes. "How're you doing?" she asks Leanne cautiously.
"I think we've got it. How do I know when he's done?" She asks, clueless to how it all works.
The hazel eyed doctor chuckles softly, "He'll pull away, it's instinctive for them to do that," she explains. "You'll have to burp him afterwards too, that's just patting his back against your shoulder till he burps," she adds with a smile.
After a while Leanne chuckles a bit. "Okay, I burped him."
Elizabeth chuckles. "It's funny hearing their little burps," she says. "Is it okay to pull the curtain away?" she asks.
"Yes," Leanne says softly, laying JJ aside to button up her shirt, the last bruise is just disappearing under her shirt when the doctor opens the curtain.
Elizabeth smiles softly. "Was there anything else I was needed for?" she asks. "Bruce really needs to get better at explaining things, him and Steve," she teases, pushing her hair out of her eyes as she moves around the bed. "Men in general, honestly," she quips, glancing over at Leanne with a smile.
Leanne smiles a bit, looking up at her. "So, Steve, Captain Rogers, he's your brother right? You're Mary Barnes."
